The issue opens with some backstory as we see an ancient vampire come across a child in the Black Forest in 1763.

In the present the vampire children have discovered they are not alone in the ruins of the city.  However, the chance meeting with a human survivor will set off a chain of events that don’t bode well for the vampires and humans.  Blood will be spilled (and drunk) and lives will be lost.

Lemire and Nguyen are masters of their art and there’s a sense that even by issue two, Little Monsters, is destined to be an epic.
