Summary

‘Concord Blue’ brings soft texture and continuous color to bright indoor spaces with its cascading foliage and graceful blue-violet blooms.

Streptocarpella saxorum ‘Concord Blue’ produces sprays of delicate flowers that rise just above velvety evergreen leaves. Once established, plants bloom repeatedly through much of the growing season, creating steady color without demanding care.

Its naturally trailing habit makes it especially well suited to hanging baskets and elevated containers where stems can spill gently over the edges. In warm climates, it can also be grown outdoors year-round in protected areas.

Care

False African Violet Care

Provide bright, indirect light or filtered sun for best flowering and compact growth. Avoid prolonged harsh afternoon sun.

Use a well-draining potting mix and keep soil evenly moist but never saturated. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings.

This plant performs well in typical indoor humidity levels but benefits from moderate humidity in very dry environments.

A light application of slow release fertilizer in spring supports steady growth and flowering.

Container Growing: Ensure containers have drainage holes and use a well-draining mix. Container-grown plants may require more frequent watering than in-ground plantings. Plants hardy in the ground may require winter protection when grown in containers in colder zones.

Additional Information

What are some common names for this plant?

This plant is commonly known as False African Violet and is valued for its trailing growth and long bloom cycle.

Is Streptocarpella the same as African Violet?

No. While the foliage texture is similar, Streptocarpella grows with a cascading habit rather than the compact rosette form typical of African Violets. It is often grouped with other Indoor Plants due to its reliable performance in bright interior spaces.

Can Streptocarpella be grown outdoors?

In USDA Zones 9–11, it may be grown outdoors year-round in protected locations. In cooler climates, it performs best as a houseplant or seasonal container addition alongside other Patio Plants.

Is this plant suitable for hanging baskets?

Yes. Its naturally trailing stems make it an excellent choice for Hanging Baskets, where the foliage and flowers can spill gracefully over the edges.

Make this one a holiday tradition.
Format: Hardcover
This is a lovely book that offers the entire holiday experience rather than just Santa and gift giving. The author goes step by step addressing the signs (weather, shorter days, etc.) that take us to Dec. 25th. This is a "family tradition book" that you'll want to keep and bring out each year after Thanksgiving. Set this book on the coffee table in the living room so that everyone can enjoy it. Book supplied by publisher.

Signs of the Christmas Season
Format: Hardcover
Written in a lyrical format, AND THEN COMES CHRISTMAS is a children's book that illustrates various signals that lead up to the Christmas holiday. It begins with changes of the weather and includes cutting paper snowflakes, hanging colored lights, elves and Santa Claus in stores, looking for a Christmas tree, holiday concerts, making and wrapping gifts, and various other activities. The illustrations are warm and joyful and feature a bi-racial family. AND THEN COMES CHRISTMAS makes a good book to read in mid-November and early December to children.

It Should be Read by Parents and Children Together
Format: Hardcover
I will always remember that when I was a child, I read Manners Can be Fun by Munro Leaf with my mother. When I found out that 4 of his books, including Reading Can be Fun, were still available I hunted them down. As a parent and psychologist, married to a teacher, I believe that all parents should read this book, as well as the others, with their children at an early age instead of letting them watch TV unattended. It worked with my children. It is an investment well worth the time.

Love them all!
Format: Hardcover
My son has long loved the story of Ferdinand (as have I), so I was delighted to be pointed to these books, now back in print. My son is impatient to read, and reading this aloud to him has been wonderful...For him to think of the places he'll go, and the friends he will meet and share with others is magical. All within books. I highly recommend!

Reading can be fun.
Format: Hardcover
I particularly like Munro Leaf's book on reading, which was written for young children to either read or be read to. The logic of choosing good things to read to develop the mind ( as compared to exercise for the body to develop) is a basic concept in the book. The stick figures are fun and mirror the text well.
