Red castor bean has no culinary use as a food plant and should never be grown or handled as an edible crop. All parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested, especially the seeds.

Origins, Migration, and History
Red castor bean (Ricinus communis) is a dramatic ornamental form of the castor-oil plant, a species probably native to tropical Africa, with Kew listing its native range more specifically as northeastern tropical Africa. Over time, the plant spread widely through warm regions of Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas, becoming naturalized in many tropical and subtropical areas. Historically, Ricinus communis has long been valued for castor oil, which has been used in medicine, industry, and manufacturing, while the plant itself also became popular in ornamental gardening because of its huge tropical-looking leaves and striking seed pods. “Red castor bean” usually refers to red- or bronze-leaved ornamental forms rather than one single fixed heirloom cultivar, though older garden strains and selections such as red-stemmed and bronze-red forms have circulated for generations.

Our Red Castor Bean seeds were grown out by our friend Susana Lein of Salamander Springs Farm in Clear Creek, Rockcastle County, near Berea, Kentucky.

Appearance and Characteristics
Red castor bean is a fast-growing, bold foliage plant that may be grown as a warm-season annual in cooler climates or as a perennial shrub in USDA Zones 9–11. It is prized for its large, glossy, palmately lobed leaves, which may be deep red, bronze, burgundy, or red-flushed depending on the strain. The stems are often red to purple, and the flower spikes carry small yellowish-green flowers, followed by showy spiny seed capsules that may be bright red, reddish-brown, purple, or green. In one growing season it can quickly reach roughly 6 to 10 feet tall under good conditions, making it useful as a specimen plant, tropical-style accent, or dramatic container feature.

Culinary Uses
Red castor bean has no culinary use as a food plant and should never be grown or handled as an edible crop. All parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested, especially the seeds, which contain ricin. Although processed castor oil has industrial and pharmaceutical uses and is described by botanical sources as non-toxic after extraction and processing, the home gardener should treat the plant strictly as an ornamental and not as a kitchen, tea, or medicinal herb.

Growing Tips
Grow red castor bean in full sun for the strongest color and best height. It performs best in rich, moist, well-drained soil, though established plants tolerate some drought better than young ones. In colder regions it is commonly started indoors about 6–8 weeks before the last frost or direct-sown once the soil has warmed and frost danger has passed. Because it grows rapidly and can become top-heavy, it benefits from a sheltered site protected from strong winds, and taller plants may need staking. Some sources also note that the plant can self-seed aggressively in warm climates, and it is considered invasive or weedy in some areas, so it should be planted thoughtfully and monitored carefully. Wear gloves when handling it, since foliage and sap may irritate skin.

Sow Depth
Sow seeds about 1 to 1½ inches deep in warm soil. For improved germination, many horticultural guides recommend nicking or lightly scarifying the seed coat or soaking seeds overnight before planting. Germination commonly occurs in about 1–3 weeks under warm conditions.

Harvesting Guidance
Red castor bean is generally grown for ornamental display rather than harvest. If you are saving seed, wait until the spiny capsules mature and begin drying on the plant, then collect them very carefully with gloves and store them securely away from children, pets, and food areas. Because the seeds are the most dangerous part of the plant, many botanical gardens and extension sources recommend pinching off the seed capsules while still small if safety is a concern. For most home landscapes, the best “harvest” guidance is simply to enjoy the foliage and remove seed heads before full maturity, especially in gardens used by children or animals.

Important Safety Note
Red castor bean is an exceptionally toxic ornamental. Do not plant it where children, pets, or livestock may have access to the seeds or plant parts, and always handle it with care.

The BEST Frother!!! (with a ONE YEAR UPDATE as of February 2026!)
Color: Black, Size: normal
I absolutely LOVE this little gem of a product. LOVE IT!! I use this thing every single day to mix up powdered collagen into a latte. It is so much fun to use. Every time I use it I sing out loud, "Oh little frother....where have you been all my life??" Ha ha! My brother had one at his house that we used to make whipped cream from heavy cream and I was honestly amazed at how quickly 2-3 ounces of heavy cream turned into delicious whipped cream for our coffees (like less than 10 seconds!) My brother has the kind that rests on a little stand, but honestly I did not want that type because the stand seemed unstable and honestly, a PITA to have standing on the counter. I like that this one does not have a stand. At first I thought the battery was going to die instantly, because it slowed down at first when I tried the first few times. But, I figured out how to use it and the trick of it is to not submerge it too far down into the drink where the little motor will struggle to keep up. Instead, I move it around a bit, giving it little periods of rest towards the top of the drink where the motor can more easily whip the liquid around. I have had this several months and the original battery just keeps on chuggin' even with daily use. The speed is crazy fast and makes the milk froth up so nicely. My collagen gets mixed up within seconds. I am talking 3-5 seconds at most. This little guy is an absolute MUST for anyone wanting to mix up protein powder, collagen, powdered vitamins/quercetin (which is famous for being extremely difficult to mix into orange juice.) It works that great. I seriously just love using it so much and should have bought one years ago. It is rare to buy a product that is super reasonable in cost and turns out to work really well and be worth every penny. It is also very easy to clean--a quick rinse under the faucet or a little sudsy scrub and you are good to go for the next time. I sought out this particular brand after reading another customer's review of a different brand frother. She pointed out that this brand was head and shoulders above the other types she has tried and I believe she is probably right. The "ON" button is at the top so it does not get in the way or splashed with liquid or anything. I use this with other drinks too, like to mix lemon juice with stevia sweetener into water, MSM powder into pomegranite juice, and just regular coffee with half and half to give the coffee a more luxurious mouthfeel when I do not feel like taking the time to make a latte or cappuccino. This frother is seriously the best. I wish there was a different color to select other than black but it was not a deal breaker, obviously. I would 100% purchase this again if needed. UPDATE, 02/21/26: I have now had this little frother for ONE FULL YEAR! And I am here to say that, in my humble opinion, it has won my personal award for "Best Product Purchased For Me" for the year 2025! I use this little guy EVERY day to make a latte, and sometimes multiple times a day to mix up other drinks, and he is just chuggin' along on the same battery as the day he arrived in the mail back in February 2025. Now my husband is hooked on it too. Here are the drinks we have used it for in the past year: - whirling up MCT oil into coffee; - mixing baking soda, water, and flavored stevia drops (it's an emergency stomach ulcer elixir that I drink sometimes) - frothing up raw, organic cocoa powder with milk and sugar - my daily lattes with collagen powder - mixing up any number of liquid vitamin tinctures that I take with water - whipping up a teaspoon of wheatgrass powder into 2 or 3 ounces of water for a quick shot - as stated earlier, mixing thoroughly quercetin and vitamin C powders into orange juice I am sure I have used it for a few other drinks but these are the ones we use it for the most. I stand by my original review and opinion. This is, hands down, THE BEST MINI FROTHER!! Congratulations little frother, on winning the award for being the best purchase for me in the year 2025! I will come back here in February 2027 with a brief update on how my little frother is working 24 months from purchase. ANOTHER UPDATE, 05/26/26: The two double AA batteries FINALLY took their last breath on May 26, 2026. The original batteries lasted a full one year and four months (and someone has used it AT LEAST once per day, every day, without fail.) Two brand new batteries went in, and I guess it must be because the batteries are 100% fresh, but I swear that now this frother is working even better than the day I got it!

Great Mixer At A Great Price.
Color: Black, Size: normal
I purchased this mixer over 6 months ago. I use it at least 2 to 3 times a day to mix fiber into a flavored drink. It also gets used for mixing gravy and Chinese sauces. So from light to medium duty and no problems at all. One battery lasted over 4 months. I did try an alternate wand mixer($15 to $20) with variable speed to try and slow the mixing down a bit. It's low speed(fast) was the same as this mixer so I sent it back and kept this one. In addition to being more economical the simplicity of the single speed should give it good reliability. Lastly, if it gets damaged you're only out ~$7.00

Easy and it works
Color: Silver, Size: Compact
It works! It doesn’t have different speed settings, and you have to make sure you have the right kind of milk, but so far it’s been great and easy to use.

Simple upgrade that actually feels worth it
Color: Black, Size: normal
I replaced a cheap milk frother I had from Walmart with this one, and it’s definitely an upgrade. Right out of the box it just feels a bit nicer and more solid, not flimsy like the other one. It’s also noticeably more powerful. It froths milk really quickly and does what it’s supposed to without any effort. I did notice it only has one ring on the whisk compared to the two on my old one, but I honestly don’t notice any difference in how it works. Only small thing was getting the batteries in, which was a little tighter than I expected. Not a big deal, just took a second. Overall, it just works well and feels worth the price. I’ve only had it for a short time, but so far I’m happy with it and hoping it holds up.
