Mel's Blue Stokes Aster (Stokesia laevis 'Mel's Blue')

Mel's Blue Stokes Aster keeps sunny beds looking crisp with bold, periwinkle-blue flowers that show up when summer is in full swing. It forms a tidy clump that feels easy to place, so borders and small gardens look more finished without needing constant attention. The blooms also pull in butterflies and other pollinators, adding life to the garden through the warm months. With good drainage and a steady watering rhythm while it settles in, it delivers reliable color and a clean, designed look.

Distinctive Features

This perennial produces large, fluffy, cornflower-like blooms in periwinkle to violet-blue with a pincushion center, typically flowering from early summer through late summer. The plant stays compact and mounded, with strap-like green foliage that holds a neat base under the flower stems. Mature size commonly lands around 12 to 18 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide, making it easy to repeat in groups without crowding. Deadheading can help extend the display and keep the plant looking polished.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun for best flowering, with light part shade tolerated, especially in hotter regions.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil is essential, and it performs best in average to moderately fertile ground that does not stay wet.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist during establishment, then water during extended dry periods to support bloom and vigor.
  • USDA Zones: 5 to 9.
  • Drainage: Avoid soggy winter soil to help the crown stay healthy and return strong.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Plant a small drift as a summer focal point where the periwinkle-blue blooms can stand out against deeper greens.
  • Front Border: Use along sunny bed edges where the compact clump stays neat and easy to maintain.
  • Pollinator Gardens: Add to sunny beds to support butterflies and other pollinators through the bloom season.
  • Containers: Feature in pots for clean summer color, using a well-drained mix and consistent watering.
  • Cut Flowers: Harvest blooms for bouquets to bring cool blue color indoors during the summer season.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Deadheading: Remove spent flowers to encourage more blooms and keep the plant looking tidy.
  • Watering: Water deeply during drought, especially in sandy soils, to prevent stress and support continued flowering.
  • Cleanup: Cut back old stems in late winter to early spring before new growth begins.
  • Division: Divide clumps every few years if vigor declines or the center becomes crowded.
  • Winter Site Care: Keep mulch light around the crown and prioritize drainage to reduce winter losses.

Why Choose Mel's Blue Stokes Aster?

  • Bold Blue Color: Periwinkle-blue blooms bring a cool, clean look that reads clearly across the garden.
  • Compact Clump: Stays tidy and manageable for edging, smaller gardens, and containers.
  • Long Summer Display: Flowers through much of summer, with a longer show when deadheaded.
  • Pollinator Value: Attracts butterflies and other pollinators when summer gardens are at their peak.
  • Often Tolerated: Frequently less favored by deer and rabbits, though browsing can still occur in high-pressure areas.

If you want summer color that stays neat and reliable, Mel's Blue Stokes Aster is a smart addition to sunny borders. Focus on drainage, keep moisture steady while it establishes, and deadhead to extend the bloom window. It looks especially strong repeated in small groups for a cleaner, designed effect. Once settled in, it becomes an easy perennial that keeps beds looking bright and intentional through the warm season.

Love this batana oil over the other brands
This batana oil has natural ingredients and leaves my hair very moisturized. I have seen some hair growth after using this for a few weeks. So it's great value for my money. It does have a coffee scent but that doesn't bother me at all. I would definitely repurchase this again.

**UPDATE ON PDT*** Ingredients changed
Ok here’s my update (4/4/26) We loved it. It did what it was supposed to do in the beginning but now I stopped using the product. Ingredients must’ve changed. It’s now a darker color, it doesn’t dissolve like it did in the past, and worst part— my daughter’s hair started breaking off. It could just be her hair but I don’t want to take chances. The ingredients definitely changed. We are trying azure batana and will stick with it for 3 months to see results. But as of now their product looks like the real deal. It’s a shame because I like consistency. I’ll stick with one product for years. Oh well. Tossed this one out. (Pic 1-2 AFTER USING; Pic 3 BEFORE USING) Yes it works. It smells so if you’re sensitive to smells, you might only want to use it as a deep conditioner. Both my daughter & I are adjusted to the smell and love the results so we can easily prioritize our results over the less than fragrant odor. But the results!!! My daughter lost 40% of her hair a yr ago to severe scalp ezcema (+ a trip to St Martin’s beautiful yet salty water). We used other products with marginal success. I started using this product 2 months ago & I already see results. We use it twice weekly as a spot treatment along the crown & nape of her head, and deep condition with it twice monthly. Her locs are growing and more importantly, her edges and nape are recovering tremendously. We’re going to keep at it!! We like the texture (moist but not sticky), it leaves her locs moisturized but not weighed down. Her hair is drinking it up. Will repost after 2 more months.

The smell.
It really does smell like coffee. Contrary to some of the comments, the coffee smell doesn't go away right away. Waiting to see the results.
