Codiaeum variegatum 'Mammi' is a compact croton selection with elongated leaves that curl, twist and spiral as they mature. The foliage carries green, yellow, orange, red and purple tones in a dense curled canopy on woody upright stems.

In a pot, Codiaeum variegatum 'Mammi' grows as a bushy tropical shrub. Its twisted leaves build a dense crown even on younger plants, while older stems can be shaped in spring to keep fresh growth closer to the base.

Recognisable traits of Codiaeum variegatum 'Mammi'

  • Elongated leaves with curled and twisted form
  • Multicoloured foliage with green, yellow, orange, red and purple tones
  • Compact shrub habit suited to containers
  • Dense canopy on upright woody stems
  • Branches after shaping once established

Codiaeum variegatum 'Mammi' twisted growth

Codiaeum variegatum is a wet-tropical evergreen shrub or small tree in Euphorbiaceae, native from Malesia to the southwest Pacific. The species has been selected widely for leaf colour, blade shape and growth habit. 'Mammi' is also encountered in horticultural references under the spelling 'Mammy' or 'Mammie'.

The curled leaf form needs steady moisture, warmth and humidity while the blades expand. Root stress, dry air or pest pressure can show as uneven new leaves, particularly during active shoot growth. A warm, stable position reduces shedding and uneven leaf expansion indoors.

Codiaeum variegatum 'Mammi' warmth and root care

  • Light: Provide very bright filtered light. Acclimate gradually to direct sun so the curled leaves develop cleanly.
  • Watering: Water when the upper substrate begins to dry. The curled narrow leaves show drought stress quickly, so keep moisture regular during active growth.
  • Substrate: Use a fertile, open mix with bark, organic matter and mineral drainage. Good airflow around the roots is essential.
  • Temperature: Keep above 15 °C, with stronger growth from 18–28 °C. Cold floors, open windows and draughty halls can cause shedding.
  • Humidity: Moderate to high humidity reduces crisping during leaf expansion. Dry air often coincides with crispy edges and spider mite pressure.
  • Feeding: Apply a light fertiliser dose during the warm growing months. Hold back after relocation stress or while the plant is growing slowly.
  • Pruning: Prune leggy stems in spring to encourage a denser crown. Cut above a healthy node and protect hands from sap.
  • Repotting: Repot once the roots fill the pot, ideally during active growth. Keep the new container only slightly wider.
  • Propagation: Propagate by warm stem cuttings or air layering to preserve the curled cultivar form.

Codiaeum variegatum 'Mammi' troubleshooting notes

  • Uneven new curls: Check watering, humidity, root condition and pests during leaf expansion. Correct the cause before the next flush develops.
  • Sudden shedding: Look for cold exposure, recent movement or a sharp moisture swing. Keep conditions steady while the plant rebuilds.
  • Spider mite damage: Fine stippling and dull leaves are early signs. Inspect folded and curled surfaces carefully.
  • Limp stems or blackened roots: Check for waterlogged substrate. Refresh into an airier mix if roots are damaged.

Codiaeum variegatum 'Mammi' toxicity and safety

Codiaeum variegatum 'Mammi' is not pet-safe. The sap may irritate skin and eyes, and ingested plant parts can irritate the mouth and digestive tract. Keep it out of reach of pets and children, and clean tools after cutting.

Codiaeum variegatum 'Mammi' etymology and botanical background

'Mammi' sits within the accepted species Codiaeum variegatum (L.) Rumph. ex A.Juss. in Euphorbiaceae. Codiaeum is linked to the Ternate vernacular name kodiho, and variegatum refers to variegated foliage.

PERFECT PEE PAD HOLDER: AFFORDABLE, EASY TO CLEAN & CHANGE THE PEE PADS, HOLDS PADS IN PLACE
Color: Navy, Size: 22" x 22"
I was THRILLED when we finally received it! I had been everywhere on Amazon & some other sites. I almost bought one that had a small pole since my newly adopted Chihuahua actually lifts his leg, unlike my previous male Chihuahua. But I kept running into a lot of holders that had a plastic "grill" to pee through the pad underneath. It didn't seem like it would be easy to clean. Plus, they were VERY expensive. However, I somehow came across this one. Once I saw the picture, it caught my attention. I watched the video & read more about. The only problem I remember is the video showed one that's foldable & easy to take anywhere with you. But that wasn't the case when we received it. However, I was still very happy with it. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was having to change pee pads because of the size. I changed to Earth Rated because that's what was recommended for this holder. My Chihuahua is around 5 years old & was "housebroken" before I adopted him from a shelter early last year. We live in an apartment on the first floor. But can't always run out the door when he has to go potty. He can wait, but I simply can't drop everything I'm doing to take him outside & I don't want to keep him waiting. He wouldn't really use it at first. But he finally got the hang of it. It's very convenient for him. I bought it primarily because I can't always go outside. Yet, it's perfect when it's raining & neither of you can't go outside, it's great to have when it's not safe to go outside in this area. I bought this around Black Friday week & got it for half its regular price! I'm thinking of getting another one to give him more space (sometimes he misses & accidentally sims for the floor). I've been cleaning it every time the pad needs to be changed. I use Biokleen Bac-Out for Pet Stains & Odors - Lavender Lime scent, which works great, but it's too expensive on Amazon. Also Earth Rated pads don't seem to work well with minimizing odors. I also find it a bit difficult to see if my dog peed because the bottom color is green. But they fit well & have adhesive corners. My dog never chews on the pads. The only problems he has is that he likes to push & pull the pad like dogs do to the grass outside when they finish peeing or pooping. Also, I don't know if the holder we have has non-slip small parts on the corners underneath. So since the floor is laminate & maybe has gotten more slippery from cleaning with the Enzymatic spray cleaner I use, the holder has been slippery lately. In the meantime, I'll try out the 100 pee pad pack sold by Iris, the maker of the holder. The previous pads don't have pads in the right size. I'm referring to Hartz 24 Hour Miracle Pee Pad in Lavender. They're white, but very absorbent & the best part: they help neutralize the odors. I absolutely recommend this pee pad holder! We got the Navy, 22" x 22", which was on a HUGE sale for HALF ITS PRICE! It's too bad I didn't buy two! It's easy to take apart (the top from bottom) to clean. The handles that latch down & the design do a good job of keeping the pads in place. If only I can find pads like Hartz, I wouldn't have to change the pads so much lately. Although I LOVE the Enzymatic cleaner Biokleen Bac - Out for Pet Stain & Odors in Lavender Lime, I'm getting tired from cleaning. But hopefully when it gets warmer here in Florida, it'll get easier again. My dog is really wonderful! I bought this NOT to be lazy, but to give him a happier, more comfortable life. He seems to be happy to have the convenience of the pee pads & enjoys watching me clean!

Our German Sheppard loves these
Size: Medium
These cost a bit more than tennis balls, but they are so much nicer and longer lasting. For starters, they stay cleaner than tennis balls because they’re smooth rubber. Dirt won’t build up on them and if anything does stick, like grass or soil, it falls off once the dog slobber dries. They’re also thick, so they don’t fall apart or blow out like a normal tennis ball does in our dog’s jaws after 30 seconds. Our GS chomps on these like crazy and the only damage they’ve suffered is a crack that developed from the edge of the hole, but the crack is growing very slowly and none of these balls have totally failed yet. The balls do whistle when thrown ant high speed and that may help a dog track and locate it, but I’m not sure. Our neighbors hear the whistling too so it’s far from silent. Lastly the orange ball is easy to locate out in our yard, but the dark blue practically disappears.

Great for smaller dogs
Size: Small
These two balls are perfect for the smaller mouthed dog that loves to play fetch. These balls are not only super durable (lots of teeth biting), but float in the baby pool we use for our miniature dachshunds. The value here is much better than you’d find anywhere else. The noise, if bitten hard enough, was “low” at best. Easy to spot/find if overthrown. Will definitely buy again once these are in bad repair; so far, so good-love these for my fur babies!

My dogs favorite balls
Size: Medium
These are great for my dog who always has to have a ball in her mouth. Not too hard so I don't have to worry about her teeth. They last for ever. They do lose their shape a little over time (like I said, she always has a ball in her mouth) they become a little oval in shape. They still bounce, she still chases it and she still chews on it so I don't think she notices or cares. I've gotten her a bag full of these over time and I have only seen one that she chewed a chunk out.

My Dachshunds Love These
Size: Small
These balls are durable, flexible material, highly chewable without being easily destroyed. I stuff them with Milkbone Maro Snacks, which are just the right size to twist into the holes in the ball. My dogs literally get an hour+ chewing and chasing entertainment from these. They chew them, they sometimes 'pop' out of their mouths, go rolling across the floor, dogs chasing them. This satisfies their urge to hunt prey. Dachshunds can easily tear this kind of stuff-it-toy apart. These have lasted for a long time without tearing or shredding. I would NOT recommend them for a dog much larger than a tweenie weenie. They're a bit on the small side and might be swallowed by a larger dog. It would be cool it they also came in a larger size (and probably ball wall thickness also) for the bigger dogs to enjoy. These stuff-it chew balls are better than the kong balls my dogs had before these. Highly recommend them.
