Sedum commixtum commonly known as Sedum 'Comic Tom' is a stunning succulent that belongs to the Crassulaceae family. This compact sub-shrub is highly sought after due to its unique appearance, making it a must-have in any succulent collection. Its blue-glaucous leaves are highly plump and succulent, growing up to 3 cm long and 1.7 cm wide. As the leaves mature, they turn purplish-red and orange-pink, adding to its charm.
This hardy plant can withstand extreme weather conditions, including frost, making it an excellent choice for outdoor planting. It grows up to 20 cm in height, making it perfect for small gardens, rock gardens, and container gardens. When grown in full sun, Sedum 'Comic Tom' produces stunning clusters of small, star-shaped, and dull yellow flowers that add to its overall appeal.
To grow this plant, well-draining soil and limited root space are preferred. Overfeeding should be avoided, and over watering can lead to root rot. However, pruning and replanting cuttings can help fill out the pot or start a new pot with more heads as it will quickly form areal roots if the roots have rotted or also if it has been kept extremely dry for an extended period.
In conclusion, Sedum 'Comic Tom' is a unique and attractive plant that is easy to grow and maintain. Its hardiness, coupled with its stunning blue-glaucous leaves that turn red or purple tips as they mature, make it an excellent addition to any garden or home. This plant is not just a work of art, but it is also a conversation starter that is sure to impress anyone who sees it.
