This particular hybrid combines the dramatic look of Bulbophyllum cruentum with the elegant forms of Bulbophyllum phalaenopsis. The result is a plant that impresses with its large, striking flowers and powerful growth form. For those who love orchids that are both exotic and imposing, this is a real addition to the collection.

Origin

The cross was created from two iconic species within the genus. Bulbophyllum cruentum is known for its intensely colored, almost blood-red flowers, while Bulbophyllum phalaenopsis is famous for its enormous leaves and dramatically large inflorescences. Together they have produced a hybrid that has both the robustness of phalaenopsis and the fiery expression of cruentum.

Features

The flowers are large and vividly colored, often in deep red to purplish tones, with a fleshy character typical of Bulbophyllum. Depending on growing conditions, the flowers may emit a distinct odor, a characteristic often found in hybrids within this genus. The plant itself can develop hefty leaves that make the flowers stand out, creating a striking contrast between green and red.

Care

Light

Bright, filtered light is ideal. A stand with morning or evening sun works well, but bright afternoon sun should be avoided.

Temperature

This hybrid grows best in warm conditions, between 20-28°C. Briefly cooler nights are tolerated, but constant warmth stimulates flowering.

Substrate

An airy substrate of fine tree bark with the addition of sphagnum supports healthy root development. It is important to keep the substrate moist but never soggy.

Humidity

High humidity (70-85%) is ideal. This hybrid therefore feels perfectly at home in a greenhouse or a well-equipped grow box. In a living room, regular misting is almost indispensable.

Nutrition

During the growing period, a light dose of fertilizer can be given weekly. This helps the plant to build up enough energy for rich flowering.

Watering

Preferably give demineralized water and ensure an evenly moist stand. The roots should not dry out completely, but too wet conditions quickly lead to problems.

Flowering

Flowering is undoubtedly the highlight. Large, fleshy-looking flowers in deep hues draw immediate attention and can be a true showpiece within a collection. Although the fragrance can be a challenge for some enthusiasts, it is seen by most collectors as a feature befitting the special allure of this genus.

Perfect for 5 Yorkies - they always go back to these...
Very durable and I'm always hearing my Yorkies gnawing and chewing on these... They really really like them. I've bought antlers and those plastic keys... But these win... The antlers are natural but I've learned they aren't healthy at all, and they still micro-splinter... The keys are too soft and plastic comes off.... These are perfect and I can see the plastic changing shape but not coming off. Perfect win. Oh, and being bright white I can see them in a dim or dark room so I don't step on them, my robot vacuum sees and avoids them, and I can see if my dogs have any bleeding gums, which they haven't had with these yet.

Great chew toy for all size pups
I had to replace a headless / tailless T-Rex. Bargain - I bought a five pack of the large Dinos for less than a three pack of the small ones.

Favorite Chew Toy for Multiple Dogs
My dogs love these! My dog, Tucker (RIP) decided this was his favorite thing to chew (he had the Stegosaurus) and what was left of those passed down to the next 2 dogs who also love them. Since they had gotten a bit small over the years, I gifted them with a 5-pack. I thought it would be multiple types of dinosaurs, but they were all Brontosauruses (which is fine - those are large and should last quite a long time). Both my 54 lb. dog and 25 lb. dog love these! They gnaw on them regularly and there's almost no sign of wear. So, although they're a bit pricey, you should get a lot of use over a long period of time.
