Aglaonema rotundum

Aglaonema rotundum is a compact Sumatran Aglaonema species with broad, almost round leaves. The upper surface is dark and glossy, crossed by pale to pinkish midribs and veins, while the lower leaf surface develops deep red tones.

The plant grows from a decumbent stem with short petioles and a small upright growing tip, so it sits low and broad in the pot. Warmth, filtered light and careful moisture around the stem base protect the broad leaf surfaces and lower stem.

Aglaonema rotundum with rounded dark leaves

  • Rounded-leaf species: A Sumatran Araceae species known for broad leaves and coloured venation.
  • Leaf shape: Broad ovate to nearly round leaves give the plant its low, broad outline.
  • Upper surface: Dark glossy green leaves show pale to pinkish midribs and veins.
  • Underside colour: The lower leaf surface develops dark red tones that are visible when leaves lift or angle.
  • Growth habit: A decumbent stem and short petioles keep the plant close to the pot surface.
  • Origin: The species comes from wet tropical conditions in North Sumatra.

Red undersides on Aglaonema rotundum

Aglaonema rotundum forms broad, rounded leaf blades with pale to pinkish vein patterning through the dark upper surface. The red underside adds colour when the leaves lift, angle outward or are viewed from below.

The stem naturally rests close to the substrate before rising into a short growing tip. Keep that stem area at the substrate surface during potting so the base stays firm and air can move around it.

Care for Aglaonema rotundum

  • Light: Bright filtered light protects the glossy leaves from direct-sun marks while keeping new growth compact.
  • Water: Water once the upper substrate begins to dry, then let all excess water drain from the pot.
  • Substrate: Use a loose, moisture-retentive mix with bark, coir and mineral drainage around the stem base.
  • Temperature: Keep the plant warm; cold wet substrate can damage roots and soften the lower stem.
  • Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity helps broad new leaves expand without dry edges.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly during active growth, using a diluted fertiliser to avoid salt marks on roots and leaf edges.
  • Potting: Keep the decumbent stem close to the surface instead of burying it deeply in substrate.

Common issues with Aglaonema rotundum

  • Brown patches: Direct sun can mark glossy leaves and damage pale or pinkish vein areas.
  • Soft stem base: Check for wet roots or a buried stem if the plant becomes loose in the pot.
  • Dry edges: Moisture swings, dry air or root stress can cause browning along the rounded leaf margins.
  • Pests: Inspect the red leaf undersides and short petiole bases for mealybugs, scale and mites.
  • Yellow leaves: Cold damp substrate or slow-draining potting mix often shows first in the lower leaves.

Safety information for Aglaonema rotundum

Aglaonema rotundum contains calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate the mouth and digestive tract if chewed. Keep it away from pets and children who may bite leaves or stems.

Botanical background of Aglaonema rotundum

Aglaonema rotundum was published by N.E. Brown in 1893 in Gardeners’ Chronicle. The species epithet rotundum means round, referring to the broad, rounded leaf shape, while the genus name Aglaonema refers to bright, thread-like floral parts.

Aglaonema rotundum keeps a low profile in the pot, with rounded dark leaves, pale to pinkish veins and red undersides.

Do overs
Format: Kindle
With every phenomenal book Mia reminds me why I became an obsessed reader. Her stories are what keep me up late into the night, unable to put them down or walk away. Rich in brimming emotions, thrumming with adrenaline rush at impending danger, this book will make you forget the world exists beyond its pages. When your fave author writes a book, you don't peek at the Blurb or look for massive list of triggers. You cover your eyes and jump in. This tragically profound story hits you with a force of a runaway juggernaut, drawing you in till you are completely consumed in the characters' lives. First few pages sweep you in like rushing tidal waves, one after another, pulling you under, in inescapable tsunami of emotions. “Fair is a myth,” Rex said. “Nothing in this messed-up life is fair.” I Landed straight into Camille Cortlandt's house where an unspeakable crime is in progress. Cami, her sister Elle and her mom are subjected to horrible torture and assault. Her father tied and assaulted too. And she was worried about another smaller problem from her boyfriend- Hollis Barclay's party!! Their lives explode in chaotic mess, flying shrapnel hitting Rex Lowe and he becomes collateral damage, thus connecting them forever. But there's another silent, abandoned victim who becomes the central pawn in the most elaborate and bizarre revenge saga I ever did read. The twist comes out of nowhere and smacks you in the face. WTH just happened and Whos & Whys will leave you reeling!! “Did. Not. See. That. Coming” Cami is strong, beaten down but rising phoenix. A brave soul indeed. Rex Lowe is a true saviour, he steps up where most would've fled. “We. There was that we again that she wanted to cup in her palms like a treasure, afraid that it’d be taken from her if she didn’t protect it. Knowing it wouldn’t be hers for long, no matter what.” Cyrus Sanders is ultra smart, observant, fantastic chess student which helps him strategize with calm conviction. What a delight to see him perform!! But the accolades belong to another person hiding in plain sight. What they do to move the story forward, keeping an eye on everything, and sneaking in when wanted was simply brilliant. Every story by Mia brings me to my knees. Her trope/genre range is vast and diverse. Uniquely penned stories with immemorable characters. I can actually recall any character of her story at any given moment of time. Such is her impact. “5 stars for Do-Overs”

Provoking but not suspenseful
Format: Kindle
Mia Sheridans thrillers are one of my top favorites, her writing style is so raw and beautiful. I wanted to love this one as much as Bad Mother or All the Little Raindrops but it just didn't hit the same mark for me. The book starts off with a bang, but soon becomes a bit more dormant for the middle portion. I still enjoyed the book, but I think I had a preconceived notion it would be more along those lines, I felt the plot of this one wasn't as suspenseful, it was fairly straight forward which is fine just not what I expected. Or maybe I'm just desensitized from all the thrillers I read. I did love the themes of how trauma, resilience and love weave together, a chance at a do over. I also felt Seraphinas portion was a little clunky and illogical in the overall storyline. Regardless I love Mia Sheridans writing and won't stray away from her thrillers.

Great for softening and conditioning “private” hair!!
Scent: Palo Santo
I’m not trying to shock an offend anybody, but this is a secret I think other women would want to know. A couple of years ago, I was walking down an aisle at the drug store, looking for some way to condition and soften my increasingly graying “girl beard” and I bought Cremo oil thinking if it can work for men’s beards then why can’t it work on other hair. I tried it and I’ve been using it ever since. It immediately softens and conditions and smells incredible. I’m sure that Cremo never envisioned it being used this way but, then again, it all depends what or who’s “beard” you’re talking about doesn’t it? Just saying. Maybe Cremo should start a line for intimate hair called “Private Reserve.” 🤔
