Diamond Head Elephant Ear (Colocasia esculenta 'Diamond Head')

Diamond Head Elephant Ear is a dramatic tropical foliage plant valued for its glossy dark leaves, ruffled texture, and bold warm-season presence. Its heart-shaped foliage develops rich chocolate, deep purple, to nearly black tones, giving containers, patios, poolside plantings, and moist garden beds strong contrast. This clumping elephant ear brings a polished, reflective look to the landscape without relying on flowers for impact. With warmth, rich soil, steady moisture, and sun to partial shade, Diamond Head Elephant Ear adds depth, texture, and tropical character to indoor and outdoor displays.

Distinctive Features

Diamond Head Elephant Ear produces thick, glossy, heart-shaped leaves with ruffled edges and dark chocolate to purple-black coloring. The foliage often points downward in classic Colocasia fashion, creating a bold, layered look as the plant fills out. It forms a strong clump that can gain impressive size during the growing season when provided with heat, fertility, and consistent moisture. Flowers may appear occasionally as a yellowish-green spathe and spadix, but this plant is grown primarily for its dark foliage, tropical texture, and glossy surface.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Grows best in full sun to partial shade, with brighter light helping support darker foliage color when moisture is consistent.
  • Soil: Prefers fertile, humusy, organically rich soil that stays consistently moist while still supporting healthy root growth.
  • Water: Performs best with regular moisture during active growth and can tolerate moist to wet soil better than many ornamental foliage plants.
  • USDA Zones: Hardy outdoors in USDA Zones 7b to 11 in protected conditions, while colder climates should treat it as a seasonal container plant or overwinter the tubers indoors.
  • Mature Size: Typically reaches about 3 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide in favorable outdoor conditions, while container-grown plants may stay smaller.
  • Habit: Forms a large upright to spreading clump with broad dark leaves rising from the base on sturdy petioles.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a glossy dark-foliage focal point in large containers, patios, poolside plantings, courtyard beds, tropical-style landscapes, or moist garden areas.
  • Container Planting: Grow in a large decorative pot where its dark reflective foliage can provide strong contrast and be moved or protected before cold weather.
  • Moist Garden: Plant in consistently moist beds, rain gardens, or pond-edge settings where its love of moisture can support strong growth.
  • Tropical Garden: Pair with cannas, bananas, caladiums, gingers, coleus, and chartreuse foliage plants to create a lush warm-season display.
  • Mixed Border: Use in large mixed beds where its dark leaves can add depth, contrast, and bold texture behind lower plants.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water regularly during active growth to keep the soil consistently moist, especially in containers and hot summer weather.
  • Mulching: Apply mulch around outdoor plants to conserve moisture, moderate soil temperature, and reduce weed competition.
  • Fertilizing: Feed during the active growing season with a balanced fertilizer to support large foliage and vigorous growth.
  • Wind Protection: Site in a sheltered location because strong wind can tear or damage the large ornamental leaves.
  • Overwintering: Lift and store tubers or move containers indoors before frost in climates where the plant is not reliably hardy.
  • Leaf Cleanup: Remove yellowing, torn, or frost-damaged leaves as needed to keep the plant looking clean and encourage fresh growth.

Why Choose Diamond Head Elephant Ear?

  • Glossy Dark Foliage: Displays chocolate to purple-black leaves with a reflective surface for strong contrast in containers and garden beds.
  • Ruffled Texture: Produces thick heart-shaped leaves with ruffled edges that add extra movement and depth to the planting.
  • Moisture Tolerance: Performs well in consistently moist to wet soils, making it useful near ponds, rain gardens, and water features.
  • Fast Warm-Season Growth: Responds quickly to heat, water, and fertility with lush foliage during the growing season.
  • Tropical Impact: Brings bold scale, dark color, and glossy texture to patios, pool areas, large beds, moist gardens, and seasonal displays.

Diamond Head Elephant Ear is an excellent choice for gardeners who want dark foliage, tropical texture, and strong seasonal impact. Its glossy purple-black leaves, ruffled edges, clumping habit, and love of moisture make it a standout plant for containers, patios, pond edges, and dramatic warm-season landscape designs.

Unique armadillo design
Style: Armadillo
I love the look of this armadillo toy. The flexible rubber shell gives it a spiky texture. It has reinforced nylon seams and printed eyes. The feet allow the toy to stand on its own, daring dogs to come knock it over. With a body length of 12" and standing 5" tall, the toy is of good size for even larger dogs, but it intimidated my 8lb yorkie mix. She found the hard shell and spikes off-putting and not fun. The toy is supposed to squeak, but either mine was broken or buried too deep to be useful. This was disappointing because I think a squeak would have helped my pup engage with the toy because she can't resist a noisy toy. I'd recommend this armadillo for larger dogs than my tiny pup. It seems durable with that rubber shell around the body.

Very Sturdy and Safe for Tough Chewers
Style: Muskie
We already had a smaller fish toy from this brand, and after 4 months it is, amazingly, still intact. So we ordered this larger one as a holiday present. Our dog usually can rip apart any toy, even "tough chewer" toys, within a few minutes or hours, so this brand is a definite keeper for us. We have also had their giraffe toy for 4 months with no rips or holes. The best part is that there is no stuffing to worry about. Inside the toy is a rope toy instead of stuffing, so it is so much less risky. Highly recommended.

Not worth the money
The dog toy that I received looks nothing like the picture. There is no stuffing, the seams are on the outside leaving frayed fabric exposed and toy itself is tiny. It is being returned.

Owls love it too!
My friend who is a licensed Master Falconer currently has an Owl as her partner. The owl (a female) is playful and had stolen a dog toy a while back and played with it until she shredded it. She loves her squeaky fish and plays with it every morning, tossing it about or shaking it.
