Malva sylvestris 'Mystic Merlin' Magic Mallow 'Mystic Merlin'

Tall sturdy spikes loaded with silky saucer-shaped flowers in a rich, mesmerising shade of deep violet-purple, intricately veined with darker maroon — true to its name, the colour is quite magical, shifting between deep indigo-purple and rich magenta depending on temperature and soil. 'Mystic Merlin' is the cottage garden's most dramatic dark-Malva, providing Hollyhock-style architectural drama in a more manageable perennial form.

If you love the height and drama of Hollyhocks but struggle with their rust problems, Malva sylvestris 'Mystic Merlin' is the perfect alternative. This stunning variety produces tall (1.2–1.5m) sturdy spikes loaded with silky saucer-shaped flowers in a mesmerising deep violet-purple, intricately veined with darker maroon. The colour has genuine character — it shifts subtly between deep indigo-purple and richer magenta tones depending on temperature, soil chemistry and time of day, giving the plant a different appearance under different conditions. The plant forms a substantial shrubby mound that flowers tirelessly from early summer through autumn, providing a dramatic dark backdrop that makes brighter neighbours appear to glow. Short-lived hardy perennial (H5) — typically lives 3–4 years, gaining size and drama each season. RHS Plants for Pollinators recognised. The flowers and young leaves are 100% edible.

A note on growing

Malvas are robust and easy from seed. Sow indoors February–May or direct outdoors May. Surface-sow onto moist compost and cover with a light dusting of vermiculite. Maintain 15–20°C; germination 14–21 days. Transplant carefully. Plant in full sun or partial shade — 'Mystic Merlin' is unfussy about soil type, thriving in everything from heavy clay to dry sandy ground, provided drainage is reasonable. Its impressive height makes it ideal for the back of borders or against sunny walls.

The mid-summer chop: if the plant becomes straggly after its first flush, shear stems back by half. Water in well; a fresh flush follows for autumn display. This is the most important maintenance practice for Malvas — without it, plants become woody and less floriferous as the season progresses.

Self-seeds prolifically — once you have 'Mystic Merlin', a permanent colony of mystical purple blooms tends to follow indefinitely.

Where it shines

At the back of cottage borders as architectural vertical drama — 'Mystic Merlin' provides Hollyhock-style impact without the susceptibility to rust that plagues actual Hollyhocks. As a complementary planting partner for warm yellow and orange perennials — purple and orange are classic complementary colours, and 'Mystic Merlin' against Rudbeckia or Calendula 'Touch of Red' creates a "colour clash" border that genuinely glows in late summer. In wildlife gardens, where the open saucer flowers are exceptional bumblebee plants. Against sunny walls and fences where the structural form provides architectural cottage character.

Plant alongside

For high-impact late-summer colour clash, pair 'Mystic Merlin' with Rudbeckia or Calendula 'Touch of Red' for the purple-and-orange complementary combination that defines designer cottage borders. For an all-Malva three-tone scheme, combine with Malva moschata 'Alba' (refined white) and Malva 'Zebrina' (soft lilac-pink with veining). With Echinops ritro 'Veitch's Blue' for blue-and-purple architectural drama.

Great specs but not much else.
Color: Khaki/Black, Color: Khaki/Black
The 36mm form factor wears small. Even on my 6-7/8" wrist. It could be that I've gotten used to the more modern 40-42mm case diameters on my other watches. Or that the 12mm thickness compared to its slender diameter gives it an odd proportion that makes the watch appear a bit smaller than it already is. But either way, it does feel small on the wrist. So if you havent tried this one on in person, be prepared for that. If you have very small wrists or prefer the aesthetic of smaller watches, then this size will be great for you. The value of this watch is difficult to pin down. In one sense, well the specs speak for themselves. And Timex has a proven history of reliabilty. But I ranked "value for money" at 3 stars, because at the end of the day you're paying $170 for a Timex. Something about that feels... weird. Timex doesnt have quite the heritage or prestige of say Citizen or Seiko - or heck even Casio for that matter. Its just a very difficult price to justify for a Timex field watch despite the great specs. I hoped in person the dial and hands would be at least slightly more impressive than they appear in the stock photos. But, no they are just as flat and blasé as in the stock photos. If you're looking for a no-nonsense solar field watch with all the specs this watch has and in this smaller 36mm case diameter, there are very few options out there. Especially under $200 (which is why I purchased it). So in that regard, I suppose its worth it. But at this price point I would like to feel a little more proud of whats on my wrist, in terms of aesthetics and design. And I dont really get that with this watch. I even think the regular quartz version of the the Timex Expedition at around $40-50 has more wrist appeal than this watch. I do like the style of the syringe shaped hands, generally speaking. But keep in mind that a Hamilton this is not. There isnt really the level of detail put into the design to dazzle the eye. Kind of a shame really because with these specs, this watch had a lot of potential to be a classic. Havent decided if Im going to keep it or send it back.

Best watch I've ever owned in my 60yrs
Color: Brown
I purchased this 36mm Expedition North Solar Field watch about one month ago, for roughly $150, and I couldn't be more impressed. When I took it out of the box the first week of January, it had no charge...because it was in a dark box in freezing temperatures. No problem, I shined light from a regular 500 lumen rechargeable flashlight on the watch face and the second hand started to move, erratically at first, but within a minute it was moving normally. I set up the flashlight 3 inches from the watch face and left it on for 3 hours, and it has been keeping perfect time ever since. I do physical labor and this watch looks just as good as it did when I got it a month ago. The low profile keeps you from banging the watch on everything you walk past, or reach for, and the black watch face contrasting with the white numbers and near white dials, makes it very easy to tell the time at night. Also, in the past I had owned quite a few expensive watches, however, my last watch was a Timex Indiglo that I put a Shell Cordovan band on, and the real leather band that comes with this watch is more comfortable than the shell cordovan. I only own 1 watch and wear my watch continuously, only taking it off when I shower, so I feel after a month I have a pretty good read on what this watch is. It is a very tough, reliable, and comfortable watch that I will be wearing for many years to come. In my opinion, the best value for a field watch on the market.

Understated Style
Color: Brown/Black
I prefer Timex over Casio because of their superior aesthetics. Timex watches have never failed me. This model fits smaller men's wrists around 6 inches in diameter, and the watch face is the right size. The black face with white numbers is easy to read. The metallic body looks awesome with the brown leather band. I wish they made one with a white face. The storage battery holds up very well when there is no sun. Accuracy is excellent. This is a very presentable and versatile watch for informal wear and business casual situations.

Quality and Reliability - Hit or Miss
Color: Brown
Update: I went ahead and bought this watch again. Like many other Timex watches I’ve had in the past, the first one was faulty but I decided to roll the dice again. I needed a beater solar watch for when I go hiking, camping, etc. There are several options out there—Vaer, Casio, Citizen. I liked the look of Vaer, but their solar offerings are overpriced, IMO. The Citizen watches priced similarly to this Timex are too big and don’t offer sapphire. Casio’s analog watches have the same issue. There is their Edifice watch, but I don’t like integrated bracelets. So Timex it is again. 36mm, sapphire, solar powered, 100m water resistant, a field watch, it has what I'm looking for. And this second time around, it's been good so far— it's been reliable and accurate. So, it’s the luck of the draw with these watches. It’s one of the more attractive Timex watches, too. If I hadn't had a prior bad experience with this watch, I would give it 5 stars. But due to the inconsistency in quality, I can’t rate it higher than 3 stars. Original review: I wanted to add a solar powered watch to my collection. So, after some research, I decided to buy this one. It had great specs—sapphire crystal, 100m water resistance, solar powered (of course), looked good in pictures. A perfect grab-and-go-anywhere watch. It was love at first sight when I got this watch; It was seeming like a great bang-for-buck product… That is, until I looked at it as a timekeeping device—its primary purpose. I compared it to my other watches and noticed it was 4 seconds behind. I thought maybe I had set the time wrong, so I corrected it. A few days passed, and again it was several seconds behind. I repeated this process a few more times, same results. So here’s the problem: this watch doesn’t keep good time. More specifically… This QUARTZ watch doesn’t keep good time. Derided by watch collectors as having no soul, accuracy is a quartz watch’s most redeeming quality. It may lack soul, but you can’t say it doesn’t excel at timekeeping; it wipes the floor with mechanical watches in that department. But this quartz watch doesn’t do that. At least the one I got didn’t do that; your results may vary. But this is the third Timex in a row that I’ve bought that cost over $100 that had some kind of major defect… Three times in a row.. I can’t rationalize buying a Timex anymore. At least not at the higher price range. Luckily, Amazon has a good return policy.
