Sempervivum 'Oddity' is a cultivated member of what is commonly known as houseleeks, in the Crassulaceae family. It descends from species native to the mountainous regions of southern Europe, where these plants occupy rocky outcrops and thin, free-draining soils under full sun. This natural background gives the cultivar notable resilience to drought and freezing conditions.

This variety is distinctive for its unusual tubular leaves, which curl inward to form hollow cylinders, sometimes with a reddish tinge at the tips. The rosettes are compact and offset freely, gradually forming spreading clusters. As with all Sempervivum, each rosette is monocarpic, flowering once before dying, with surrounding offsets ensuring the continuation of the colony.

Flowering generally occurs in summer, when mature rosettes produce tall stems bearing clusters of star-shaped blooms. The flowers are typically pink to reddish and attract a variety of pollinating insects. After seed production, the flowering rosette dies back, leaving its offsets to take over growth.

Care Tips:

  • Light: Full sun is ideal to maintain compact form and promote strong leaf colour.
  • Water: Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry thoroughly between applications.
  • Media: Gritty, sharply draining mix suited to alpine and succulent plants.
  • Fertiliser: Occasional feeding with a diluted, low-nitrogen fertiliser during active growth.
  • Temperature: Hardy to frost and sub-zero temperatures when kept dry.
  • Repotting: Minimal; divide and replant offsets or refresh the substrate as needed.

My guy loves the duck. At first the "different" sound put him off a bit but soon he was throwing his new toy all over the house. The reason I gave 4 stars is because my 8 lb. pup managed to undo the ducks braided legs and now they are nothing but a bunch of strings hanging from its body. Other than that he enjoys this toy immensely.

Great toy...
Size: 12"
My dog LOVES this toy! It's very durable as he loves to throw it around. It was bigger than I expected, but my little shih Tzu still loves it.

Not for "chewers" or puppies.
The toy is not "ruff and tuff", at all. Puppy had it torn to bits in just a few minutes. Nothing like handing your dog the toy while you finish unloading groceries only to come back and it looks like it snowed stuffing in your living room. It's made of a very thin material and is quite flimsy. Won't be buying this brand again. Might be good for an older dog who just wants to carry it around or play fetch. Although it's so light and flimsy, throwing it any farther than a few yards probably wouldn't work...

Favorite Handy Toy
This snake has been around our house for years! My shitzu/maltease dog is tiny, and he has a small mouth, but I call him Diablo! He loves to growl and act like a horrible terror when it comes to fighting over a little squeaky toy, and we use the snake to try to "push" the little toy away from his mouth. He loves to bite the snake and pull on it viciously. The snake has tiny holes in it, but has pretty much stayed intact. I am getting ready to add more stuffing inside it so it won't be so floppy. years of use have flattened it out. I love this thing. Well worth the money for a small-mouthed dog. The squeaker in the head was fun while it lasted, but the beauty of this snake is its shape and versatility as a pull on, and sneak up behind toy.
