Pumice Improves Soil Aeration and Drainage for Root-Heavy and Arid Plants

Pumice is a naturally occurring porous stone formed from volcanic activity, and it’s one of the most effective and sustainable ways to improve soil aeration, drainage, and moisture balance. Whether you’re working with succulents, cacti, or large root systems, this lightweight soil amendment boosts structure and airflow in a way that organic matter alone cannot.

At Sybotanica, we source high-quality, coarse pumice that adds both form and function to your soil. Its long-lasting structure won’t compact or break down over time, making it the ideal choice for plants that require dry spells between watering. You can use it as a potting mix additive, a decorative top layer, or even as a clean terrarium element.

What Is Pumice, and Why Is It So Effective?

Pumice is a volcanic rock that’s light enough to float on water and porous enough to absorb and redistribute moisture slowly. It contains countless tiny cavities that store water and air, creating the perfect conditions for root oxygenation and moisture control. Its gritty texture also helps break up dense soils, making it invaluable for indoor plants prone to root rot or compacted substrates.

Benefits of Using Pumice in Plant Care:

  • Enhances drainage improvement in heavy or moisture-retentive mixes
  • Boosts root health with consistent aeration and airflow
  • Retains moisture without causing soggy conditions
  • Provides long-term structure that doesn't decompose
  • Safe for all houseplants, especially succulents, cacti, and tropicals
  • Doubles as a natural, decorative lightweight aggregate for top dressing

Whether you’re working with epiphytes in a bark-heavy mix or crafting the perfect blend for a monstera, pumice adds breathable body to the substrate without interfering with nutrient availability.

The Best Substrate for Large, Thirsty Roots

Some plants grow aggressively below the soil line, developing thick, vigorous roots that need room to expand and breathe. Pumice offers the texture and structure these roots crave—especially in older plants or species like snake plants, ZZ plants, and bird of paradise.

If you’ve dealt with compacted mixes, poor drainage, or stagnant pockets of moisture that lead to rot, you’ll find pumice to be an immediate and lasting solution. It allows water to move through the mix while also absorbing enough to create stable hydration—key for balanced moisture regulation.

Pumice vs. Perlite: What’s the Difference?

While both pumice and perlite are used to boost drainage, pumice is heavier, longer-lasting, and more mineral-rich. It stays in place during watering, won’t float to the top of pots, and won’t degrade with time. Its gritty, non-compacting nature means your indoor gardening substrate stays fluffy and well-drained with less frequent repotting.

Perlite is excellent for seedlings or propagation, but for mature plants with established root systems, pumice provides unmatched stability and aeration.

Decorative, Natural, and Endlessly Versatile

Besides its functional role in soil, pumice also works beautifully as a natural mineral top dressing. Spread it across the surface of your pots for a clean, modern look that also helps regulate evaporation and reduce fungus gnats. In terrariums, it blends well with bark, moss, and charcoal to create a gritty, breathable environment that won’t mold or collapse over time.

Because it’s a sustainable substrate with neutral pH and no chemical residue, pumice supports cleaner, healthier plant care practices from the ground up.

How to Use Pumice in Your Soil Mix

  • For succulents and cacti substrates: Mix 30–60% pumice with base mix from SYBASoil for a dry, fast-draining blend.
  • For root-heavy plants: Add 20–30% pumice to regular potting mix to prevent compaction.
  • As a top layer: Spread a 1–2 cm layer of pumice on top of soil to retain surface moisture and discourage fungus gnats laying eggs.
  • In terrariums: Combine with orchid bark, moss, and activated carbon carbon for added drainage and microbial control.

Because pumice is completely inert and mineral-based, it won’t interfere with your plant’s nutrient uptake or pH balance, making it an ideal root health booster for long-term use.

Sybotanica’s Take: Simple, Strong, and Made to Last

For us at Sybotanica, pumice is more than a soil additive—it’s one of the unsung heroes of healthy indoor growing. We love how it elevates soil mixes, especially for established plants that need support beneath the surface. We package our pumice in clean, resealable bags so it’s ready to use and easy to store between repottings.

Our soil philosophy is simple: make it breathable, natural, and built to last. That’s why pumice has a permanent place in our mix library—and why we recommend it to anyone looking to level up their soil game.

Is this even real?!!!
Style: Face, Size: 2 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Ok, I am a sunscreen fanatic and have tried most products on the market and I am SO impressed with this product!!! It is by far the best daily facial sunscreen I've used so far!!! I really can hardly believe it is a (non-nano) zinc base as it leave absolutely NO whitish finish. First of all, it's hard to find a sunscreen with only physical UV blockers (zinc or titanium) without any added chemical blockers. There are a few (including the Korean skincare products) but they ALL leave a white film. This is the FIRST all zinc sunscreen that looks completely natural after application. I still have NO idea how they did this without using nano-zinc!!! Second, the texture and finish are so light and non-greasy that I cannot tell that I put anything on my face. It's fantastic!!! It absorbs right in!! Granted, I do not have oily skin so I cannot speak for someone who does. It isn't drying but also not super moisturizing so if you have dry skin, you might want to use a heavier cream under this product. Third, the smell is light and pleasant. i do not find it overwhelming or distracting. I rather like it. The downsides are (1) it is not inexpensive at about $20/2 oz and (2) it is not sweat resistant (though it suppose that would come at a cost of a more greasy texture). I love love love this sunscreen!!! I only started using it recently so I'll see if it really works well to protect my face from UV exposure... I'll update this later regarding the effectiveness as a sunscreen. Thanks for a fantastic product!!!

no white cast, super moisturizing, dewy finish, citrus scent
Style: Face, Size: 2 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: Face, Size: 2 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
I have a shelf of sunscreens. I am trying to find the perfect sunscreen for daily use on my face. I happen to be fair skinned, so if it happens to have a white cast, it isn't too noticeable. But still, I'd like to not even have to worry about it. I also would prefer not to use chemical sunscreens. I often use those on my body, but for my face which is more sensitive- the physical (mineral) sunscreens is better for me. There is NO white cast with this, so definitely fine for darker skin tones if you are looking for a physical sunscreen. This sunscreen is nice. I hot days or days I know where I will be sweating a bit, I don't bother with my expensive skin care routine, since I am likely to sweat it off. This sunscreen offers some skin care goodies above and beyond non nano zinc oxide. So I feel like I am still doing something for my skin, including moisturizing it. According to description, it has antioxidant super plants: --Juanilama: anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-oxidant (87% more than vitamin E) properties, and --Fierillo: anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, skin healing, and antioxidant properties; plus.. --Wakame Kelp: reinforce skin defenses again environment, etc --Tazman Pepper: reduces skin inflammation and redness, and --Arabica coffee oil: lubricates skin. regenerates hydrolipid barrier to promote hydration and skin repairing. Smells energizing- like a punch of citrus fruit. It lingers for a little while then seems to dissipate. I can get it near my eyes and they don't get irritated. Kinda surprised it is a strong scent for something that is likely to go on the face. Bottles says no synthetic colors, fragrances or unhealthy ingredients. "Fragrance" is vague here, and although maybe not synthetic, it should be cleared up as to what it is. The company says in answering one of the questions that the fragrance comes from essential oils- if so, they should list the essential oils used. I imagine it is a citrus blend, but essential oils are different than just listing "fragrance". It would be helpful to see exact oils used. Then in another question answered, it was not mentioned that essential oils are used to create fragrance, but that it would be naturally occurring from some of the other ingredients. Which is it? If it is the latter, then the company would be doing themselves a favor by taking the word fragrance out of the ingredient list since not only would it be redundant to keep it in there it could scare off people who are avoiding "fragrance" as a listed ingredient. A product can have a scent due to other ingredients used that have a naturally occurring scent .. and and still be fragrance free. If it is a matter of it being from essential oils.. then that should be listed as well- for better or worse- but at least it is transparent information. Some people have strong reactions to essential oils on their face, whether from scent or from the activity they have. Some dont have reaction. Yet Some have strong reactions to "fragrance" as an added ingredient. Normally I see "fragrance" on a bottle and choose something else, as it typically depicts synthetic, and if it isn't synthetic then it doesn't need to be listed generically as fragrance, but instead specifically as to what the fragrance is derived from. Anyway, I thought I would add that as I am sure there will be potential customers looking at the ingredient list and this may help them one way or another. I hope this review has been helpful to you. If I learn anything new, I will be sure to come back to update. Take care all :) List of ingredients: Water, Coco-Caprylate, Dicaprylyl Carbonate, Glycerin, Microcrystalline Cellulose, Lauryl Glucoside, Polyglyceryl-2 Dipolyhydroxystearate, Cetyl Alcohol, Coffea Arabica (Coffee) Seed Oil, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Cellulose Gum, Xanthan Gum, Phytic Acid, Arrabidaea Chica, Lippia Alba, Undaria Pinnatifida Extract, Ethyl Macadamiate, Tasmannia Lanceolata Fruit Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Rosemarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Fragrance, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin

Very Satisfied!
Style: Face, Size: 2 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
This is far better than some of the other facial sunscreens I have tried. It isn’t too thick, it has a smooth texture, and it does not leave the dreaded white cast that many do. It has a slight citrusy smell which some may not prefer, but it is not a deal breaker for me. I will definitely buy it again and continue using as my daily moisturizer.

Not a huge fan of this
Style: Face, Size: 2 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
The pump bottle doesn't work, which isn't great but is also not a deal breaker. You can twist off the cap and get the product out that way. I may have just gotten a defective bottle, who knows? The sunscreen itself has a really nice texture like others have said and it goes on smoothly with no cast. But it also smells strongly like incense; several very fragrant plant ingredients at play here even though it has no artificial fragrances. Rosemary, some kind of australian pepper plant, and other strong smelling ingredients. If strong smells bother you, you might not like this one. I really don't like this smell. It made my skin red and itchy too, unfortunately. Not something I can really use :( Love what the company is doing with the clean ingredients, though. Lots of pros and cons here and I'd definitely recommend trying it out even though it wasn't my cup of tea. Getting the small sample size to start with was the right move!
