The Sugar Apple Plant, also known as Annona squamosa or Sweetsop, is a highly sought-after tropical fruit tree prized for its unique, segmented fruits and sweet, custard-like flavor. Native to the tropical regions of the Americas and the West Indies, this small, deciduous tree is an excellent choice for home gardeners looking to grow their own exotic fruit. With its attractive, open canopy and delicate, elongated green leaves, the Sugar Apple adds ornamental value while also providing delicious harvests. This tree typically grows between 10 to 20 feet tall, making it well-suited for smaller gardens, container growth, or orchard plantings. It produces pale green, knobby-skinned fruits that ripen to a soft texture, revealing a creamy, aromatic pulp inside. The tree’s fragrant yellow-green flowers bloom in spring and early summer, attracting beneficial pollinators. The Sugar Apple thrives in warm climates and is well-adapted to subtropical and tropical regions. Once established, it requires minimal maintenance, rewarding growers with abundant, delectable fruits that can be enjoyed fresh or in desserts and beverages. Whether you're an experienced gardener or a beginner looking for a rewarding fruit tree, the Sugar Apple is an excellent addition to any tropical or subtropical landscape. Its fast growth rate, high fruit yield, and unique appearance make it a standout choice for fruit enthusiasts and home gardeners alike.

  • Distinctive Appearance & Fruit Characteristics: Featuring slender, lance-shaped leaves and an open, spreading canopy, the Sugar Apple is an attractive addition to any tropical landscape. Its green, segmented fruit ripens to a soft texture, revealing creamy white pulp that is exceptionally sweet and aromatic.
  • Light Requirements: The Sugar Apple thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day. It performs best when planted in a warm, sunny location with good air circulation, ensuring optimal growth and fruit production.
  • Watering Needs: While young trees require regular watering to establish strong roots, mature Sugar Apple plants are drought-tolerant and prefer deep but infrequent watering. Allow the soil to dry slightly between watering sessions to prevent overwatering.
  • Soil Preferences: This tree prefers well-draining, sandy, or loamy soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Avoid heavy clay soils that retain excessive moisture, as proper drainage is essential for healthy root development and fruit production.
  • Growth Rate & Climate Adaptability: The Sugar Apple is a fast-growing tree that flourishes in USDA hardiness zones 9-11. It thrives in warm, humid climates but should be protected from frost, as cold temperatures can damage the foliage and fruit.

Memories of the Camino
Format: Paperback
First off, I have to say that my husband and I know Angela, the author. We met her because she is a neighbor of my sister, living in Hawaii. We discovered that she planned to walk the Camino de Santiago de Compostela the same year we were (2016) ! On a visit to Hawaii, we met with Angela and did a little local hike together. She was so enthusiastic and had prepared well. We, too, had been reading up and watching videos, getting suggestions as to what to bring, how to deal with physical issues and weather, what to pack and what not to pack, etc. Still, for anyone doing the Camino - whether the WHOLE 500 miles or doing the required 100 km to get the certificate at the final destination: Santiago de Compostela, Spain - it is a very personal endeavor. Reading Angela Leslee's book gives you the personal story of her "camino," and it is captivating. The changes that take place in her life - the discoveries she makes, the people she meets, the failures she feels, the fears, the habits that get broken (such as food choices!) - all make for an adventure that is life-changing and an interesting read. For anyone considering this pilgrimage, because that's what it is, this book will inspire you. You don't need to be part of a "group." You don't need a lot of plans. You do need to be prepared to be changed. The memory for myself and my husband is that it is the best shared experience we have had together in our 50 years of marriage! Angela's book brought back so many wonderful memories for us. I highly recommend this book.

Feeling Inspired!
Format: Paperback
Reading "The Way of Love" has inspired and encouraged me as I plan for my first (solo) Camino. I thank Angela Leslee for being unafraid to bare all the emotions in her book: the joys, victories, setbacks, disappointments, and pain. It's evident that "The Way of Love" was a labor of love as page after page recounts the 500 miles she walked! I told the author in an email that, in September, when I walk my Camino, I'll be sure to be up and out on the trail "...before sunrise when the yellow street lights cast their magical glow." Can't wait to experience that! "The Way of Love" -- easy to read and enjoy.

the good, the bad, the funny, the reality
Format: Kindle
A great memoir of an “older” woman walking the Camino de Santiago alone. Alone but with many friendships along the way.

An Honest Tale
Format: Kindle
When someone you know writes a heart-felt story of a journey of self-discovery, it's startling to realize how little you knew of their self. Walking the Camino across Spain in 40 days of pain and revelations, Angela takes us on an epic journey into her soul. She marvels, delights, laughs, and cries at the breath-taking scenery, the scents of forests and fields of flowers and grasses, the fellow pilgrims she meets and re-encounters across the 40 days. Day by day we travel with her. Her account of everyday life on the journey is vivid. I recommend this book to everyone who has been, or wants to go, on a voyage of self-examination, who wants to question why they are living in the way they are. Maybe life could be different, if one took time to try a different way.

Compelling!
Format: Paperback
I loved this book. It is a personal, honest, beautiful account of walking the Camino, and I didn’t want it to end. The actual reality of walking the Camino is aptly portrayed in this open-hearted story. Angela’s unique turn of phrase, her outrageous humor, her vulnerability, the unrelenting pain, and the lessons learned are beautifully expressed, and are a testament to her endurance and to her Love. Angela has the true heart of a pilgrim, showing us that seeing with eyes of Love is all that matters. Bronwen Diana
