An affordable B flat Baritone! A solid performer that offers incredible value.

The Eastman EBS253 is a robust and reliable baritone saxophone, thoughtfully designed for advancing students and ensemble players seeking quality without the premium price tag.

Built with precision and durability in mind, the EBS253 features a strong brass body, hand-adjusted key work, and smooth action across the range.  Despite being situated in the 'student' bracket this baritone offers a high quality and mature tone, with no dead spots or areas of difficulty throughout its range.  The palm key notes and upper register in general has a strong and singing quality. All in all there is substantial value here on offer and at a fantastic price.

Low B flat versus Low A!

One of the main considerations when selecting this instrument is the fact that it only goes down to Low Bb and NOT low A, which has become the norm in recent times, largely due to some of the big band repertoire and soul band music that occasionally requires bari players to play the low A.  That said, the Low Bb baritone was how it all started and for many years this was our only choice!  There are many bari aficionados who will insist on only playing the Low Bb version due to the advantages of WEIGHT and SOUND; the weight is an obvious advantage, but when it comes to sound, you can argue that the sound of a Low Bb baritone is more free-flowing and nimble.  It is certainly easier to play more rapid passages without the same demands on the breathing systems that a Low A model will present us with.  The debate is open!  However, whatever your stance on the matter is, you now have a choice, and the Eastman EBS253 represents one of the only choices of Bb baritone at this price point.

Reviews

Having been incredibly impressed with some of Eastman's more recent saxophone entries - the 52nd St models for alto, tenor and (more relevant here), baritone - I had high hopes for this 'student' model.  The 52nd Street baritone blew me off my feet with its all-round quality of build and its defined tonal centre.  Yes, the EBS253 being reviewed here is a different beast and in a much lower price category, but I think we can take confidence from the fact that Eastman, as a brand, are doing great things with their current line-up of instruments.  Their entire range of instruments, from their 200 series models (this one) up to their 800 series (52nd St models with the advanced DS mechanism) are now being manufactured in Eastman's own Chinese factory - there is no sourcing one model from this factory, and another from that....I believe this centralized approach helps to maintain a consistency through their entire product range.

On to the instrument itself, the EBS253 does everything you need a baritone to do (except go to a low A!) and it does it all rather well.  We recently featured this baritone in a 'Low Bb versus Low A baritone' video where I didn't really have a bad word to say about the instrument.  I'm not particularly a bari guy and only play them occasionally, and so for me it's important that the instrument is easy to play, free-blowing, has a natural key layout and a good, solid tone.  For me this sax does all of these things very well.  If you were to compare with Eastman's upper series models you feel a slight uplift in tonal depth and projection, but the tone on the EBS253 is easily good enough for most situations, and at the price it is being offered at, represents great value for money.

Bacon and a Ball? Can life get any better?
Style: Small Ball, Size: 3 Count
Come on.. these balls are the best. They smell like bacon, yes, they really do. They are durable and squeak. Upon aggressive play, the squeak will die out but the ball will still be useable.

She LOVES this ball
Style: Small Ball, Size: 1 Count
Our dog likes toys, but this ball is now her favorite ball. She even took it to bed with her last night. Our dog is 65 pounds, but she likes smaller toys so I ordered the small ball. It’s a good size. It’s nice and soft and squeaks. She seems to kills the squeaker right away, but she didn’t with this ball. It seems to be the least amount of money I’ve spent on a toy for her and it’s her favorite. I ordered another one just to have on hand. This toy is a great bargain!

Not Durable Enough for a Dachshund to be Left Alone With (Updated)
Style: Small Ball, Size: 3 Count
I just received these balls today and got one out for my daughter's Dachshund. She loved it for about 15 minutes and then gnawed a huge chunk out of it. It was in the garbage within 20 minutes of receiving it. I'm not even going to give her the other ones. We had an issue once before where she was chewing on her Kong and swallowed some pieces. It messed up her digestion for quite a while. Not taking the chance with these balls. Too bad because they have nice bounce and good squeak. She was thrilled with it until we saw that she ruined it and we quickly took it away from her. If you have a Dachshund or other aggressive chewer, I'd look for something else. UPDATE - I've bumped up the rating by 2 stars, changed the review title, and ordered another set. We found that we can't leave the dog alone with the ball, but if we use it to play with her, we can monitor when she starts to aggressively gnaw at it. So now, it's more of a fetch ball and we've taught her how to stop gnawing it and drop it for another chase. They still give in to her sharp little teeth more easily than other toys, but she really loves them and gets so excited when we get one out. It's easily her favorite toy, and who doesn't want to see their pup happy?! It's definitely not a chew toy, but it's been great as a fetch ball. If you go into it with that understanding, you and your pup will both be happier with the product.

Our Dogs Are Obsessed. The Squeak Is Intense.
Style: Large Ball, Size: 3 Count, Style: Large Ball, Size: 3 Count
BLUF: Our dogs absolutely love these — the squeak is loud enough that we sometimes have to take them away. --- Our dogs went crazy for these the moment we opened the pack. They’re durable, super bouncy, and easily became the new favorite toys in the house. The only thing to know is that the squeak is loud — like “I need to take this away for a minute” loud. But honestly, that’s probably why the dogs love them so much. Great value for a 3‑pack and perfect for pups who enjoy a good squeaky toy.

A great toy for any dog!
Style: Small Ball, Size: 1 Count, Style: Small Ball, Size: 1 Count
The Hartz Duraplay ball is great! My 4 1/2 yr. old Pug has never liked playing with them before. He has gone crazy for this ball. He has no trouble grabbing it with is mouth. He ever gets it to squeak with his feet. I think it’s a great dog toy. Excellent!
