Opuntia, commonly known as the Prickly Pear, is a resilient cactus native to the southwestern US and Mexico. It is easily identified by its flat, paddle-like segments covered in both traditional spines and barbed bristles called glochids.
The 'Snow' variety, Opuntia polyacantha, is commonly called "Fuzzy Cactus" or "Sasquatch" prickly pear due to its dense white hair-like glochids. This resilient succulent is built for extreme weather, easily surviving freezing winters and temperatures as low as -20°F. It is a perfect, low-maintenance choice for outdoor landscapes in colder climates where most other cacti wouldn't survive.
