Florida Sunset Hibiscus Uses in Phoenix Landscapes

Tropical Pool-Side Planting

Florida Sunset Hibiscus is one of the top choices for creating a resort-style, tropical atmosphere around Phoenix pools. Its large, colorful blooms and lush foliage evoke the look of a tropical getaway without leaving Scottsdale or Gilbert. Plant it in groups of 3–5 around a pool patio for a layered, full-color tropical effect. Pair with Bird of Paradise and Bougainvillea for a complete resort aesthetic. Space plants 4–5 ft. apart for a full, lush pool-side border.

Focal Point Specimen Plant

Few plants command attention like Florida Sunset Hibiscus in full bloom. Position it at the end of a garden path, in a corner where two walls meet, or as the centerpiece of a mixed shrub bed. The dramatic orange-to-red gradient blooms are true showstoppers that create an instant focal point in any Peoria or Glendale landscape. Plant a single specimen in a decorative container on a covered patio for maximum visual impact near outdoor living spaces.

Colorful Privacy Screen

Florida Sunset Hibiscus grows to 4–6 feet with dense foliage, making it an effective mid-height privacy screen when planted in a row. Unlike purely green hedges, this screen offers spectacular floral color all season long. For a 20-foot screen: plant 4–5 shrubs spaced 4 ft. apart. For 40 feet: 8–10 plants. Combine with taller Bougainvillea or Giant Bird of Paradise behind for layered privacy.

Patio Container Planting

Florida Sunset Hibiscus thrives in large containers, making it ideal for covered patios, courtyards, and entryways in Phoenix where in-ground planting isn't possible. Use a 15–25 gallon container with well-draining potting mix. Container plants need more frequent watering than in-ground — check soil moisture daily in peak Phoenix summer. Move containers to protected areas during rare Phoenix cold snaps below 32°F.

Best Time to Plant Florida Sunset Hibiscus in Phoenix

Spring (February–April) is ideal for Florida Sunset Hibiscus in Phoenix — warm temperatures encourage rapid establishment and you'll likely see blooms within weeks of planting. Fall planting (October–November) is also excellent; the plant establishes roots through winter and is ready to burst into growth and bloom the following spring. Avoid planting in peak Phoenix summer heat (June–August) if possible, as newly transplanted hibiscus struggle with extreme temperatures and water stress simultaneously.

How to Plant Florida Sunset Hibiscus

  1. Dig wide, not deep — excavate 2–3x the root ball width and the same depth.
  2. Amend the soil — unlike drought-tolerant desert plants, hibiscus benefits from added organic matter. Mix 30–40% compost into backfill. Break through any caliche layer for drainage.
  3. Backfill and firm — fill in amended soil and gently firm to eliminate air pockets around roots.
  4. Spacing — plant 4–5 ft. apart for screens and groupings; 5–6 ft. for individual specimens.
  5. Water basin — build a 3–4 inch soil ring to direct irrigation to the root zone.
  6. Mulch — apply 3–4 inches of mulch to retain moisture. Florida Sunset is thirstier than desert plants — mulch is essential in Phoenix heat.

Watering Florida Sunset Hibiscus in Phoenix

First Year Watering Schedule

Florida Sunset Hibiscus is not drought-tolerant and needs consistent moisture, especially through Phoenix summers.

  • Weeks 1–2: Water every day, deep and slow (20–30 minutes per session)
  • Months 1–2: Water every 2–3 days
  • Months 3–6: Water every 3–5 days (every 2–3 days in peak Phoenix summer)
  • After Year 1: Every 3–5 days in summer; every 7–10 days in winter

Drip Irrigation

Install drip emitters 12–18 inches from the trunk, using 2 GPH emitters. For Phoenix summers, Florida Sunset Hibiscus may need 2–3 emitters per plant. Monitor leaf wilting in afternoon — if leaves droop and don't recover by morning, increase watering frequency. Deep, infrequent watering is better than shallow daily sprinkling.

How often does Florida Sunset Hibiscus bloom in Phoenix?
In Phoenix's warm climate, Florida Sunset blooms continuously from spring through fall — often producing new flowers every few days during the peak growing season. In mild Phoenix winters, it may even continue blooming year-round with some protection.

How big do the flowers get?
Florida Sunset Hibiscus blooms can reach 6–8 inches in diameter under ideal conditions in Phoenix. Each flower typically lasts one day, but the plant produces new blooms continuously throughout the season, keeping the show going all summer.

Does Florida Sunset Hibiscus handle Phoenix summer heat?
Yes, but it needs water. Unlike desert-adapted plants, tropical hibiscus requires consistent moisture to thrive in Phoenix's triple-digit summers. With adequate irrigation and full sun, it performs beautifully — often blooming most prolifically during warm months.

Can it survive Phoenix winters?
Florida Sunset Hibiscus is cold-sensitive and can be damaged by frost. In Phoenix's Zone 9b–10a, hard frosts are rare, but plants may defoliate or sustain tip damage in cold winters. Cover with frost cloth when temperatures drop below 32°F. Plants almost always recover vigorously in spring.

Does it work near pools?
Yes — it's one of the best pool-side tropical plants for Phoenix. The blooms are large and showy, the plant is relatively clean (drops spent blooms naturally), and it creates an authentic tropical resort atmosphere around Arizona pools.

  • Torch Glow Bougainvillea — a compact, upright bougainvillea with orange-red bracts that complements Florida Sunset's warm color palette perfectly.

How Many Florida Sunset Hibiscus Do I Need?

Florida Sunset Hibiscus matures to 3 to 5 feet wide, so space plants about 4 feet on center for a full, blooming screen or pool-side border. Use this guide for a single row:

Run Length Plants Needed (4 ft spacing)
10 ft 4 plants
20 ft 6 plants
30 ft 9 plants
40 ft 11 plants

As a focal specimen, plant one as a centerpiece or set 3 to 5 in a loose group spaced 5 to 6 feet apart so each plant has room to show off its oversized blooms.

Florida Sunset Hibiscus Season-by-Season in Phoenix

  • Spring (Feb to Apr): Best planting window. New growth flushes fast and the first big blooms open within weeks of warm weather.
  • Summer (May to Sep): Peak bloom season, with new flowers opening every few days. It loves the heat but is not drought-tolerant: keep water steady and consistent through the monsoon and triple-digit stretches, and watch for afternoon wilt.
  • Fall (Oct to Nov): Strong second planting window and continued bloom as nights cool. Roots establish well before winter.
  • Winter (Dec to Jan): Cold-sensitive and semi-evergreen. It can defoliate or take tip damage below about 32°F, so cover with frost cloth on freeze nights. Plants almost always rebound vigorously in spring.

Is Florida Sunset Hibiscus Right for Your Yard?

Florida Sunset Hibiscus is ideal for a full-sun, well-watered tropical or pool-side bed in enriched, fast-draining soil, where its giant sunset blooms can be a true focal point all season. It is not a fit for a low-water xeriscape or an unirrigated spot, since it is thirsty in Phoenix heat and frost-sensitive below about 32°F, needing cover on the coldest nights.

Good, but you need to be careful with it
I've done business with GE CRB before using other store cards, so I knew what to expect going into this. I will echo the advice that a few others have given. For one, I would recommend that you only use this card for one purchase at a time and that you pay it off entirely before using the card again. The interest starts accruing immediately, but you are not billed for it until the promotional term expires - for example 6 months, 12 months, etc. You will see the expiration date and accrued interest amount on your bill. I always make sure I can pay off the entire amount well before the expiration date. Also, I schedule automatic payments through the website so it's paid every two weeks (pay day works well for me). I divide the balance by number of payments and schedule all of them right away. It's very easy to do this and will prevent late payment fees and the possibility of defaulting and getting hit with the accrued interest. I haven't had to deal directly with GE CRB customer service yet, so I don't have any complaints on that. The benefit of having a card like this is being able to use it for major purchases, paying it off over time, and avoiding any interest charges because you are paying off the balance before the promotional term (deferred interest) expires. You can't do that with a regular credit card. If you want a card to make frequent purchases with and plan on paying off the balance at the end of the month, you're much better off with a regular credit card. One warning... I noticed that after I was approved for this card my method of payment for Kindle one click purchases changed to this card. Keeping it that way would not be good and I wanted to make sure others know about this. I'm pretty sure you'd be hit with the interest at the end of the month since the purchases you would be making are lower than what's required to receive the no interest promotions. I changed it back to my debit card. Just keep on top of the account, don't use it to make a bunch of purchases, and pay the balance off before the promotional terms expire and you'll be fine. Like all credit, being responsible is the key to not getting in trouble with it.

For small bills i can do cash. I only signed up for your card because of the $40 discount on a nVIDIA Shield Tablet. 2:17:04 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: My credit score is 754 with Transunion and 740ish with the other on CreditKarma.com 2:17:58 PM : James: I completely understand and I apologize for the inconvenience. 2:18:28 PM : James: Please be advised that there is no annual fee, 0% fraud liability and you are eligible for numerous Promotions offered. Alimony, child support or separate maintenance income need not be included unless relied upon for credit. 2:20:03 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: no hard credit pulls. 2:20:13 PM : James: Your request for a credit line increase may result in an inquiry on your credit bureau; however, some requests are determined using only internal factors on your account and may not result in an inquiry on your credit bureau. 2:20:20 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: i just want to see the decision and why it was made? 2:21:01 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: too much activity was one of the complaints. 2:21:28 PM : James: I am so sorry for the inconvenience, I understand 2:21:34 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: I have a secured card i am always changing the limit on by increasing the collateral. 2:22:08 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: each month i place a few more hundred on it. So each month my credit changes. 2:23:13 PM : James: We value you as our customer and appreciate your business. 2:23:15 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: (10% discount on a shield tablet? I decided to apply. 400 - 40) 2:23:23 PM : James: If you wish I can place a request for credit line increase 2:23:51 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: I do but only if they look over the application with this info and make a new dicision. 2:24:14 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: The credit pull would hurt my score by much more than $400 is they do it again. 2:24:32 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: Just help me pay right now !!! 2:24:44 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: Are you after a commission or something? 2:25:07 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: just want to pay the card off in a lump sum right now. 2:25:34 PM : James: I will explain you 2:25:34 PM : James: It is very difficult for you to determine with certainty whether or not there will be an inquiry when processing a credit line increase request. This is due to the “internal factors” as mentioned above. 2:25:54 PM : James: And the balance on your account is $403.23 2:25:59 PM : James: I will credit $25.00 to your account 2:26:14 PM : James: And you can pay $378.23 2:26:24 PM : James: I am trying my best to help you in all the way I can 2:26:34 PM : James: Would you like me to credit $25.00 to your account? 2:26:54 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: Sure. Every penny matters. 2:27:14 PM : James: Your satisfaction is important for us and I will do my best to help you in all the way I can. 2:27:49 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: I still want to make the entire payment on the card today. Can i call and use a debit card to pay it all off? 2:28:08 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: Do i have to wait 48 hours for it to post on my account? 2:28:29 PM : James: You may call customer service at toll-free 1-866-634-8379 and make payment without any fee with debit card 2:28:44 PM : James: No, you can call and make $378.23 payment 2:30:22 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: So just to be clear. You have applied a $25 credit. And if i call right now. The new balance they will see is = $378.23 ? 2:31:00 PM : James: Yes, you are absolutely right. 2:31:25 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: I have one more question. May i ask it here? 2:31:54 PM : James: Sure 2:31:59 PM : James: I will be more than happy 2:32:38 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: I have a utility company here named JEA. I once set up automatic payment of my utility bills. Then paid the bill when it arrived. 2:33:41 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: Then on the scheduled day of automatic payment they double charged me for a bill that had been paid down to zero two weeks before.... Will that happen on 4/20 with this scheduled thing i did? 2:34:34 PM : James: You can just click on "payments" tab and then select "scheduled payment" 2:34:44 PM : James: You can cancel the payment or edit the payment date and amount 2:35:04 PM : James: If you wish to make the payment over the phone with debit card you can cancel the payment 2:36:07 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: So that was an important question. 2:36:39 PM : James: Yes, else both the payments would post 2:36:42 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: I followed you directions and it wants me to log back in. However it did not accept my email address as my log in ID. What now? 2:37:20 PM : James: The site would be timed out 2:37:43 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: Yes. So what is the correct log in ID? 2:37:58 PM : James: May I please request you to click on "Forgot User ID" on first page of www.syncbank.com/amazon? 2:38:03 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: I know my password. But it does not ask that. Just the ID? 2:39:52 PM : James: Yes, you can get your user ID 2:39:57 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: silly damn computer. It was my email. But it had to be all if lower case and no proper Caps for it to be accepted...... :::annoyed::: 2:40:32 PM : James: I am so sorry for the inconvenience caused. 2:41:15 PM : James: I will be glad to help if you need any more information from your account. 2:42:05 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: ::snicker at the trained response:: do you have another $25 to apologize with? 2:44:02 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: I entered my email with caps. But the system automatically changed it. 2:44:24 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: Then would not accept it with caps to enter the account. WEIRD. 2:45:15 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: Are you quiet to see if they will approve the $25 or is this professional distance? Perhaps you had business to address elsewhere? 2:45:56 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: What was that number again? I'd like to call and make my payment. 2:46:13 PM : James: I am really sorry, I have already processed $25.00 and system does not allowed to credit another $25.00 2:46:23 PM : James: You may call customer service at toll-free 1-866-634-8379 and make payment without any fee. 2:48:41 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: That's fine. I only ask because every penny counts. And you'll have to forgive me. But it is mildly insulting to tell me you are sorry for the inconvenience when the computer or programmers is clearly not sorry and intentionally set it up so that i could not use proper caps in my ID or email address. Rather than get upset at the lie i chose to laugh at it as a canned response. 2:50:57 PM : James: Yes, the user ID is case sensitive 2:51:03 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: I called the phone system and it says you lied to me twice??? It says my balance is $403.23 ? 2:51:16 PM : James: I understand, it would be frustrating some times if the system does not help us 2:51:28 PM : James: As mentioned, the balance will be updated in next 48-72 hours 2:51:48 PM : James: However, you can be rest assured that your balance is $378.23 2:52:44 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: please forgive me for being frustrated. But if you read the conversation there was no mention of wait 48-72 hours for the credit to post. I know it is not your intention. But that makes a third lie. 2:53:36 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: I asked specifically if i call right now will the credit be posted? And your response was Yes when i call it would show up. 2:54:32 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: or at least that is how the conversation felt. 2:55:09 PM : James: I am really sorry for the confusion. 2:55:29 PM : James: $25.00 will post in next 48-72 hours, however, you can pay $378.23. 2:55:39 PM : James: And cancel the payment which was made online 3:02:28 PM : James: I will be glad to help if you need any more information from your account. 3:02:28 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: Is it possible to save or email this conversation as a copy to myself? The problem is the computer system and not you. But a lot of things happened here. Ridiculously low credit limit. ID being made all lower case by the website. The automatic charge 20 days later if i had not asked you. And a lot of bad things could have happened. In fact some things did. Amazon made my default automatically their card instead of the one i selected. So a lot of my purchased were canceled or interrupted and did not ship on time until i logged back in and changed the payment method. EVER THOUGH AMAZON APPROVED ALL THE PURCHASES on their card and then frozen them days later. Not hours. Days later. I had to wait on an emergency tool to unlock something important. And that was delay by days because of their computer systems changing things automatically just as it did with me ID? Don't they think i know what i want? Why do they force their card and their lower cases and their enforced payments even if the account balance would have been zero when it happened? I could be overdrawn with these things they do. $404 dollars is not always in that checking account. 3:03:00 PM : James: I am sorry, we do not have an option to email 3:03:01 PM : James: Once the chat is ended, you may scroll down and click on "Skip the Survey and Print chat". 3:04:11 PM : James: Please do not misunderstand, and I am really sorry for all the confusions and problems 3:04:55 PM : James: We do respect your time and understand how difficult it would be if you are getting problems in log in 3:05:45 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: I will try the phone again now. What is the correctED balance i want to pay when i call? 3:06:10 PM : James: You can pay $378.23. 3:06:30 PM : James: And make sure that you cancel the payment which you made online 3:06:40 PM : James: Thank you for your patience. 3:08:42 PM : James: I will be glad to help if you need any more information from your account. 3:08:58 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: ty on phone 3:09:45 PM : James: Thank you for your patience and understanding. 3:10:00 PM : James: Thank you for contacting Synchrony Bank regarding your Amazon.com Store Card. Have a wonderful day. 3:11:41 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: Here is a 4th lie. They want paper checks and not credit card. Debit card is not an option. And the voice recognition is nearly impossible had to repeat until it let me use the touch pad to navigate. 3:15:22 PM : James: You can make the payment over the phone with live agent with debit card 3:15:36 PM : James: You can say "agent" "agent" 3:15:54 PM : James: It will connect you to live agent and you can make the payment with debit card 3:16:10 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: Thank you James. An agent did answer. And she said there would be no charge for the Debit card. 3:16:25 PM : James: Perfect! 3:16:30 PM : James: Thank you. 3:16:43 PM : James: Thank you for contacting Synchrony Bank regarding your Amazon.com Store Card. Have a wonderful day. 3:17:23 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: Okay i paid the $378.23 ~ Here is hoping all this posts overnight. StarOffice used to be better than Word and for all the Linux users out there it is not good to assume a paid for Microsoft program is on every computer. 3:26:02 PM : Ui Neil Sandage: Star Office may still be better. (My computer does have the other. I had a student discount on it.) The following is three fields from the Feedback Survey after you "close" or as it says "Exit" the Chat window. **** The card and process is a nightmare. The $400 limit was only good for the one purchase i made. And my balance was $403.23 with tons of blocked orders on Amazon because i spend more than $1,000 in a month and it automatically switched my default payment card to Syncho profanity. ~ James did okay. But as soon as my “paid in full” zero balance posts, then I am closing the account. Edited: (too many characters = 255 with spaces) The $400 limit was only good for the one purchase i made. i spend more than $1,000 in a month and it automatically switched my default payment card to Syncho profanity. As soon as my “paid in full” zero balance posts, then I am closing the account. **** James was polite and prompt. But there were a few things unclear or felt contrary. When asked or prompted he did well. I appreciate the $25 credit. It took the hate or venom out of the emotions. But it is the card and hit on my credit for a ridiculously low $400 that i paid off today and wanted to close today that is ridiculous. The balance does not update quickly and i have to wait. At the start the Agent kept wanting to pull my credit for a second month to change me credit limit when what I opened with was a desire to pay in full and correct when the payment would be processed from 20 days out as it automatically dated the bank draft, to process it today. He was saying there is a magical chance that might not happen does not help. I need a yes or a no. Again. He is not doubt an excellent agent for politeness. But i need a very precise agent that does what I want and not someone who does credit pulls at every chance. There were a lot of issues i had to figure out for myself even though he works for them. I had to get to the conclusion before he confirmed it. And he was polite. It is the company(ies) that is(are) the problem and not this specific person. Edited: (too many characters = 255 with spaces) He is not doubt an excellent agent for politeness. And this exit thing really does exit the chat so that you can not have a copy of the conversation. Even now it says submit this feedback or get a copy of the chat. You are not allowed to talk back if you want to read what was said or have a copy of it. EDIT : 238 without spaces or 305 with. They have a character limit of 255. Convenient and easy to use
It's convenient and easy to use. The interest rate is a little high but it's not a concern if you pay off your balance. I love that you can link it to your Amazon account making it even easier to make payments and manage.

Easy Approval Process and Great Rewards
I’ve had a very positive experience with the Amazon Store Card so far. The application and approval process was quick, simple, and straightforward. Managing the account through the Synchrony app has also been very easy, with a clean layout that makes it simple to view balances, make payments, and track purchases. One of the best features is the 5% rewards on Amazon purchases for Prime members. The cashback adds up quickly if you shop on Amazon regularly, and the rewards are easy to redeem during checkout. I also appreciate the special financing options that are sometimes offered on larger purchases, along with helpful account alerts and security features. Overall, this card is convenient, user friendly, and a great option for frequent Amazon shoppers.

Great card to have highly recommend
Like using the card for everything. 5 to 7% cashback credit is awesome. No interest is even better. I put almost all my purchases and bills on my credit accounts or credit cards and pay them off monthly. Now that I'm a senior citizen I don't like to go to 20 different stores to find the best prices. The card made my life less busy and I don't have to worry about paying for the many, many things I need right away. Even though I pay off all my accounts every month. If I need a big ticket item, like a new flat-screen television I can get it and not worry about the cost by paying over time if I need to. Having another credit account has also improved my credit score by the hundreds. I was in the 500s for decades until I started the secured card on Amazon. Now I am nearly at an excellent score in the high 700s and don't need secured credit cards. I can use my account at Whole Foods and have my phone scanned for payment. It's just so easy to use
