Philodendron mayoi

Philodendron mayoi is a Brazilian species in the Araceae family, known for glossy green leaves that become more deeply divided as the plant matures. Juvenile leaves are simpler, while older blades develop a cut, fingered outline with divisions reaching toward the midrib.

This Philodendron is best described as a scrambling to scandent species rather than a strict upright climber. In a pot, the stems may spread outward from the base or be guided gently onto a small support, with mature foliage becoming more sharply divided than the first juvenile leaves.

Divided leaves and scandent Philodendron mayoi stems

  • Foliage: Glossy green leaves with a divided outline.
  • Juvenile growth: Young leaves are less divided and become more cut with maturity.
  • Growth habit: Scrambling to scandent growth, with stems that can spread or be guided upward.
  • Origin: Brazilian species from Brasília D.F. and Goiás.
  • Habitat context: Brazilian seasonally dry tropical conditions, with care that favours air around the roots and steady warmth.
  • Safety: Toxic if chewed or swallowed by pets or children.

Juvenile and mature leaf shape in Philodendron mayoi

Young Philodendron mayoi plants can produce simpler blades before the more divided mature foliage appears. As the plant gains size, the cuts become more pronounced and the leaf outline develops a sharper, more fingered shape.

The stems extend outward or upward depending on how the plant is grown. A small support can guide scandent growth, while a wider pot gives spreading stems room to develop without crowding the newest leaves.

Care for Philodendron mayoi in a pot

  • Light: Give Philodendron mayoi bright filtered light. Weak light can produce stretched growth and smaller, less clearly divided leaves.
  • Water: Water when part of the potting mix has dried, then let the pot drain fully. Long wet periods around spreading stems can stress the roots.
  • Substrate: Use a loose aroid mix that drains quickly while holding light, even moisture.
  • Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity helps new divided leaves expand without dry edges.
  • Temperature: Keep warm and stable, ideally above 18 °C, with protection from cold draughts and cold wet substrate.
  • Support: Use a small pole, plank or stake if you want to guide scandent stems upward.
  • Pot choice: Choose a stable pot with enough surface space for the spreading stem base and free drainage below.
  • Repotting: Repot when roots fill the pot, the substrate breaks down, or spreading stems need more stable space at the surface.
  • Fertilising: Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced houseplant fertiliser at diluted strength.
  • Growth rate: Growth is usually moderate indoors, with clearer leaf division developing as the plant gains size.

Philodendron mayoi pruning, propagation and mineral substrates

  • Pruning: Remove damaged leaves close to the petiole base, or trim an overextended stem above a node.
  • Propagation: Propagate from stem cuttings with at least one node and healthy aerial-root tissue.
  • Semi-hydro: Suitable for mineral or semi-hydro substrates if the roots stay warm, oxygenated and not stagnant.
  • Training: Guide flexible stems early if you want a more upright plant shape.

Philodendron mayoi leaf division, dry edges and root stress

  • Less divided leaves: Juvenile leaves are naturally simpler, but weak light can also reduce leaf size and definition.
  • Yellowing leaves: Check for wet roots or a dense potting mix that stays damp too long.
  • Crispy margins: Dry air, underwatering or heat stress can mark the thin edges of divided leaves.
  • Root issues: Slow growth with yellowing leaves often points to compacted substrate, poor drainage or cold wet roots.
  • Pests: Inspect the cuts, leaf backs and new growth for thrips, spider mites, mealybugs and scale.

Philodendron mayoi toxicity

Philodendron mayoi contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Keep the plant out of reach of pets and children that may chew leaves, petioles or stems.

Philodendron mayoi name origin and botanical background

Heinrich Wilhelm Schott described the genus Philodendron in 1829 in Wiener Zeitschrift für Kunst, Litteratur, Theater und Mode; its name combines Greek philo- or philein, meaning loving, and dendron, meaning tree. Philodendron mayoi was described by Eduardo G. Gonçalves and published in Kew Bulletin in 2000. The species epithet mayoi honours the aroid botanist Simon J. Mayo.

With glossy divided leaves and spreading scandent growth, Philodendron mayoi develops a distinctive mature outline in an indoor aroid collection.

Great Value for a ball my dog loves!
Color: S6-muti-color
I wish these ball were in the subscription program! My dog gets sooo excited by the new ball, but her interest in things lasts for a few days. She kills the squeak within 11minutes, but the squeaker stays in place rather than becoming a chocking or swallow hazard, and she still loves to chew it. Next, we must throw the ball approximately 723 times the first day, possibly 496 times on day 2, and just 3- 4 on day 3, at which point she will chase the ball before hollering "it's over here if you need it," while she checks on the chipmunk den. We currently have 17 of these balls in our yard (because we have given several leftovers to a less discriminating doodle next door). These balls hold up really well, get her extremely active for the first couple of days, and are a much cheaper than doggie daycare (after an active morning with a new ball, she is happy to chew on it and sleep much of the day). I always have these on hand!

Pieces chewed off
Color: white & green
My Aussiedoodle loves it. I throw it down the hallway, it bounces crazy, and he chases it. The only complaint is that he can't chew much of the ball part. So now I have to have it put away and brought out for special playtime.

This is Willow The Dog’s favorite toy!
There is not much that needs to be said about this, frankly, amazing dog toy find. After about 6 months, Willow absolutely loves this seemingly indestructible, soft stick toy. She was born a stick dog and has always enjoyed fetch with tree limbs, balls, frisbees…And like most dogs, loves tug-o-war and chewing. I thought I was buying a <$4 toy stick that I expected my girl would destroy fairly readily. What I actually received was something that didn’t really match the description because it had MORE features and uses than I expected. Anyway, the short of it is in the video. What she loves: Fetching: I don’t know how dogs see colors, but I can confirm that my dog finds this toy highly visible day and night. This claim is based on my observations of how she retrieves this toy compared to real sticks, yellow and blue tennis balls, a large real bone, and rope toys both night and day, as I work late, so much of my one on one time with our pup happens around midnight to 1am with no outdoor lighting so we don’t disturb sleeping neighbors as much. Additionally, I find this toy highly visible in all conditions, which would make finding it in the grass after Willow is worn out and goes inside easier, except that she loves the toy so much that she always brings it in with her. Tug-o-war: Being a soft, ultra-durable material, this toy eagerly pulls double duty as a tugging toy. Dog teeth sink into the orange material by compressing it. They do not puncture the orange part, or at least not that I’ve noticed while casually examining it, making this toy last indefinitely, so far as I can tell. The size of the stick is roughly an inch in diameter and maybe ≈14-16” long, so it is, I think, a perfect size for my medium sized Australian Shepherd’s mouth. She can grip it solidly in her back teeth, side teeth, front teeth, and even if she has only two or three teeth in just a corner, she can always get a good, comfortable grip. No sharp, jagged edges of frayed plastic to abrade or irritate the inside of Willow’s mouth, gums, or cheeks and no orange material breaks off and gets swallowed. The blue material is somewhat more rigid, like a plastic, BUT is still fairly soft and while it does show some bite marks, it is still quite durable and is, I will estimate, at least 95% intact after about 6 months of average three or four 15-20 minute sessions each week. Additionally, the size happens to be perfect for my large hands, but also feels like it is appropriately sized to be easily manageable by most people. This toy is VERY flexible and gives both Willow and I excellent maneuverability and pulling left to right and up and down and back and forth and to and fro as violently and aggressively as we can manage with out the rigidity of other objects shifting uncomfortably in her mouth or my hand. The stick is long enough to accommodate both my large hand and her mouth, even both of my hands on either end with her biting in the middle. Chewing: This not Willow’s favorite chew toy, but to be fair, it isn’t really marketed as a chew toy, so I feel the degree to which it fulfills that function is “good”, which I consider to just be an added bonus feature AND an extremely good value for the money. Anyway, she brings it inside when we are done playing outside and chews on it occasionally, apparently when she wants a break from her seemingly endless and evidently boring selection of toys, enrichment gadgets, kids, neighboring dogs, and family cats. Summary: At $4, even if your dog picks it up and walks on her or his hind legs to dispose of it immediately upon presenting it to them, it will be worth it just to see that, but if your dog loves it as much as mine, you might, like me, be so pleased with it's contribution to your dog’s life, you may start doubting your sanity when the strangest thought creeps into your head as you actually consider “refunding the seller” by sending them an additional $3.94 because they absolutely deserve to be paid more for this wonderful toy. Enjoy!

Perfect Toy
My dog loves this ! It is very sturdy, very strong, but flexible. It feels soft, but seems chew proof, even for my 100 pound Cane Corso. The stick shape is more practical than a ball; it doesn't roll off or get lost under furniture.

Good toy, strong yet soft!
This was one of my best toy purchases for our GSD! He’s a rough playing dog with a hard mouth! Toy destroyer! This he loves to fetch, tug, carry, and chew on. I never really expected it to last when I got it. Surprise! Almost two months of rigorous daily play and it’s still almost like new!
