Introducing the marvelous Trailing Elephant Bush, known as Portulacaria afra 'Prostrata', a stunning variety of the Portulacaria afra! This extraordinary succulent groundcover, also known as Spekboom or elephant food plant, is a true showstopper, boasting undeniable hardiness and enchanting beauty.

Wherever it grows, its outstanding glossy leaves, which are perfectly rounded and glisten with a hint of elegance, will captivate them with an allure that is impossible to resist. Portulacaria afra 'Prostrata' is a small, low-growing succulent that typically reaches a mature size of 6–12 inches in height and spreads up to 3–4 feet wide. Its compact and trailing growth habit makes it an excellent choice for ground cover or cascading over walls or containers.

The flowers of the trailing Portulacaria afra prostrata are typically pink or pale purple and add a delightful touch to the plant's overall appearance. However, it's important to note that flowering is not as common in Portulacaria afra prostrata compared to other succulents. So, while the focus is mostly on its trailing growth and vibrant leaves, the occasional burst of blooms can be a pleasant surprise!

When it comes to propagating elephant bush Portulacaria afra prostrata, it can be done through stem cuttings and leaf cuttings. With time and proper care, the cutting will develop roots and grow into a new plant. Both methods can be successful in propagating this lovely succulent.

Additionally, the Portulacaria afra prostrata variety is generally considered safe for both humans and pets. This means you can enjoy the beauty of this plant without worrying about any harmful effects if accidentally ingested.

Watering Needs

This variety of dwarf jade is a succulent plant that doesn't need too much water. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's important to let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Water your elephant food plant when the soil is dry to the touch, but not bone dry. During the summer months, you may need to water your elephant plant more frequently than in the winter (dormant).

When watering your trailing elephant bush, make sure to give it a thorough soak. Water the soil around this dwarf jade bonsai until it starts to drain out of the bottom of the pot. Empty any excess water from the saucer underneath the pot to prevent the roots from sitting in standing water. With proper watering, your trailing Portulacaria afra prostrata will thrive and grow beautiful trailing stems!

Light Requirements

When grown indoors, the Portulacaria afra prostrata prefers bright, indirect sunlight.  Place your trailing plant in a location that receives bright light for most of the day. If you notice that the leaves are turning yellow or brown, it may be a sign that this succulent elephant bush is getting too much light.

If you are growing your trailing elephant bush outdoors, it can tolerate some full sunlight for at least 4-6 hours a day, but too much can scorch the leaves.

If you don't have a bright spot in your home, you can still grow a trailing elephant bush! These elephant bushes can tolerate lower light conditions, but they may not grow as quickly or produce as many leaves.

You can also supplement your Portulacaria afra prostrata light with a grow light. Place the grow light a few inches above the Portulacaria afra prostrata and keep it on for 12-14 hours a day.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The trailing elephant bush Portulacaria afra prostrata prefers well-draining soil that is slightly acidic. You can use a succulent soil mix or make your own by combining regular potting soil with sand or perlite. Here at Planet Desert, we have a specialty-formulated succulent potting mix that contains 5 natural substrates and organic mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your succulent to thrive. Make sure the pot has a drainage hole to allow excess water to escape.

When it comes to fertilizing your Portulacaria afra prostrata, less is more. It doesn't need a lot of fertilizer to thrive. You can fertilize your succulent plant once a year during the growing season (spring) with a balanced fertilizer of NPK (5-10-5). Don't fertilize your  plant during the winter months, when it's not actively growing. With proper soil and fertilizer, your trailing elephant bush will thrive and grow beautiful trailing stems!

Hardiness Zone & More

The ideal temperature for indoor trailing Portulacaria afra prostrata is 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit, they can survive moderate winter temperatures as long as the soil is not wet, and the temperature does not drop below 45 F. They ought to be overwintered indoors to prevent harm from freezing weather.

The Portulacaria species can't stand frost or too much humidity, therefore it needs warm, dry conditions. A well-draining potting mix and drainage holes in the potting container will help you maintain temperatures and prevent too much moisture. They can therefore be cultivated outside in USDA zone 9.

If you’re curious about open ear earphones give these a try
Color: Black, Color: Black
I don’t normally review but these are genuinely great quality, especially for the price! I was skeptical about open ear for sound quality/comfort to be honest and the first couple days I used them they were a but uncomfortable and my ears hurt after a while, but once you figure out how to fit them properly and get used to it they’re actually incredibly comfortable, so much that I often forget I have them on lol. The part that hooks on your ear is a soft bendy plastic, silicone-like so it’s pretty forgiving for different ear shapes. I love the dual connecting Bluetooth as well, super useful for switching between tasks on different devices. The sound quality is pretty on par with higher end options and it doesn’t really leak sound much either, even though it’s open ear which is great, also allows you to still hear your surroundings really well so good for commuting/out and about/office work. Great battery life and they charge quickly in the case, I work in video editing so use them pretty much all day and with the case they last several days before needing a recharge. I’ve had them for a couple months now I think and I’m really glad I went with this option. Absolutely the best option I’ve tried around this price point, anker products as a whole I’ve found are really great quality at a very reasonable price.

COMFORT KING 👑✨
Color: White
I struggle finding headsets that don't bother my ears OR cause headsets 🙈 others will just fall right out which gets super annoying... These on the other hand, are like air!! I genuinely cannot even tell I'm wearing them! The ear piece is adjustable for all (or most) ears! The sound quality is amazing while still being able to hear what's going on around me. They don't fall out, the adjustments help with that too! Even on the tightest setting, it's not uncomfortable, the silicone really feels like butter. My only semi-complaint is that the battery doesn't seem to last very long, but I've only used them out of the box 🙈 I'm gonna charge a full day and see how they do! Honestly not a major problem anyway because I only wear one for work, when one dies I just swap to the other. Connectivity is quick and easy! If you are picky about ear comfort, I promise you, these will not let you down!! ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE MONEY

Good value
Color: Black
These arrived a day early and I am currently wearing them as I write this. So far these aren't bad and I'm having a hard time complaining about what you get for the price. I got these for around $30 and the fact these have touch controls and an app you can use to adjust the EQ, the touch settings, and other things already makes them a good deal. The main reason I bought these is because I needed a pair of open earbuds for work so I can listen to music while still being able to hear what's going on around me. The sound quality isn't terrible but it isn't going to blow you away either. It's kind of like having 2 cheap but decent Bluetooth speakers strapped to your ears. Out of the box they might sound a tad muddy but I like using the hip hop or electronic EQ settings to make them sound more clear with added bass. They don't sound as good as in-ear earbuds (mainly because the bass isn't as rumbly) but they still sound really good, especially for the price. Once you change the EQ settings they have good clarity and you can hear the subtle nuances of each instrument. And although you can't really feel the rumble of the bass you can definitely hear it and most songs sound great on these in my opinion. I did notice that some songs with heavy sub bass sound kind of weird though. The touch controls work pretty well but hitting the right spot can be a little tricky especially when doing double taps. These also stay locked to your ears pretty well. You could headbang to some heavy metal music and these will not be sent into orbit. Some people say these are comfortable and you almost forget you're wearing them but I've had them on for about an hour and I can definitely still feel them. They aren't the most comfortable earbuds I've ever worn but they don't feel that bad either. I wore them at work most of the day and only my left ear started to feel slightly uncomfortable but I think that was just because the earbud needed to be adjusted a bit. The battery life is great and the case has fast charging which is convenient if you want to throw them in the case on your lunch break and get enough juice to last the rest of the day. The case is also smaller than I expected. I thought it would be bigger considering the size of the earbuds but it's literally the length of a toilet paper roll (i'm sick and have a roll laying on my bed next to the case) and it's about as wide as the upper part of your palm and as thick as a mcdonalds cheeseburger lol if you want a solid pair of open ear buds for work but aren't trying to spend a fortune these are a good option to consider. Just keep in mind that you aren't going to get super high quality studio level sound from these but that's not what they're made for anyway.

Soundcore V20i: Seamless Bluetooth Switching, Long Battery Life, No Drama
Color: Black
Alright… listen up, Amazonians. I don’t write reviews. I avoid them like I avoid assembling IKEA furniture without instructions. But these Soundcore V20i headphones dragged me in here against my will. I’ve spent enough money on headphones over the years to qualify for a small auto loan—Apple, Samsung, Bose… if it had a fancy box and a price tag that made me uncomfortable, I bought it. And yet somehow THESE are the ones that made me stop mid-day and go, “Wait… why do these work better than everything else I own?” Now let’s manage expectations before anyone accuses me of losing my mind: do they sound like you’re sitting front row at a live concert? No. Do the ear hooks feel like they could use a little more cushion? Yes. Do they have noise cancellation? Absolutely not—you will still hear your dog barking, your coworkers talking, and every bad decision echoing in your head. Are they waterproof? Also no. If you drop these in a pool, that’s on you, not Anker. BUT… these things have one superpower, and it’s the one feature that apparently every $200+ pair of headphones forgot to get right: they switch between my phone and computer like they’ve achieved enlightenment. I’m on my computer all day—calls, music, more calls, more music, repeat until I question my life choices. Before these headphones, switching devices felt like negotiating a hostage situation. “Why won’t you connect?” “Why are you connected to the wrong device?” “WHY ARE YOU CONNECTED TO THE NEIGHBOR’S TV??” With these? Call comes in—boom, switches instantly. Call ends—boom, right back to music. No button mashing, no Bluetooth menu gymnastics, no yelling into the void. It just works. The only thing I’ve used that even comes close is AirPods, but try using those outside the Apple ecosystem and suddenly you’re troubleshooting like it’s 2007 and you just installed a printer. These? They don’t care what you’re using. Windows? Cool. Samsung phone? Great. Chaos in your life? Handled. They’re comfortable, they don’t feel like they’re trying to burrow into your skull, and they actually stay on your ears when you move around like a normal human being instead of a statue. Oh—and the battery life? Ridiculous. I keep waiting for them to die and they just… don’t. At this point I’m convinced they’re powered by spite or dark magic. Are they perfect? No. Do they do the ONE thing I actually need better than anything else I’ve tried? Shockingly, yes. For this price, it’s honestly ridiculous. Anker really woke up and said, “What if we just made something that works… and didn’t charge a kidney for it?” Bold. Respect!

Surprisingly Good
Color: Black
I got these over a year ago for less than $25 and I’m surprised with how good they are. I needed something in a pinch just for calls and expected a product that would sound horrible when listening to music, but these inexpensive earphones sound pretty decent. They have an app that allows you to use different equalizer settings giving you rich sound and bass either using their presets or you can set custom EQ. I like that these are over the ear so you can enjoy your music and still be aware of your surroundings. They are light and comfortable, so much so that I almost forget I’m wearing them at times. The hook over ear design is secure enough that I don’t feel I have to adjust them often like earbuds that constantly feel like they’re going to fall out of my ears. You can also use the app to customize the touch features on each earpiece individually and there are lights on the earphones that you can turn on and off and set to different colours. The batteries last a long time, up to 8 hours on a full charge (when not using the lights feature) and they charge really quickly when you put them back in the case. The only thing I don’t like about them is you can’t tap them to answer calls, which is why I bought them. At least I haven’t been able to figure out how to get that to work. But other than that, I’m pretty satisfied with my purchase.
