Dracaena godseffiana 'Silver' is a tropical evergreen plant from the Asparagaceae family, valued for its decorative foliage with silvery variegation. Native to West Africa, this cultivar stands out for its compact appearance and variegated leaves, making it ideal as a houseplant for apartments, offices, or modern interiors. Unlike other dracaenas, it has a bushy form rather than an elongated one.

Appearance of leaves, flowers, and fruits

  • Leaves: The leaves are oval, 5-10 cm long, arranged spirally on thin stems, dark green with irregular silvery or creamy-white lines. The texture is glossy, and the variegation gives a shiny visual effect, similar to silver dust. The foliage is dense and remains attractive throughout the year.
  • Flowers: Flowers are rare indoors, but when they appear, they are small, white or greenish, grouped in clusters, with a subtle scent. Flowering is more frequent under optimal light and humidity conditions.
  • Fruits: It produces small, red-orange berries, but these are extremely rare in cultivation and have no ornamental value.

Growth characteristics

  • Height and width: Reaches 30-60 cm in height and 30-45 cm in width, forming a compact, branched shrub.
  • Vigor: Slow growth, ideal for small spaces. Develops thin stems that can become slightly woody at the base.
  • Type: Evergreen perennial plant, grown as a houseplant.

Growing conditions

  • Exposure: Prefers bright indirect light, ideally near an east- or west-facing window. Tolerates low light, but variegation becomes less intense. Avoid direct light, which can burn the leaves.
  • Soil: Grows in well-drained substrate based on peat, with perlite or sand (e.g., mix for houseplants). Pots must have drainage holes.
  • Watering: Water moderately, once every 7-10 days, allowing the top 2-3 cm of substrate to dry out between waterings. Avoid excess water, which causes root rot.
  • Temperature: Hardy in zones 10-12 (down to 10°C), prefers temperatures of 18-24°C. Avoid cold drafts or temperatures below 15°C. Suitable as a houseplant in Romania.
  • Humidity: Tolerates average indoor humidity (40-50%), but prefers higher humidity (60-70%). Occasionally mist the leaves or use a humidifier.

Care and resistance

  • Resistance: Resistant to indoor conditions but sensitive to overwatering and direct light. May attract spider mites or mealybugs; inspect regularly and treat with insecticidal soap. Tolerates occasional neglect well.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a liquid fertilizer for green plants (e.g., 10-10-10 diluted) once a month in spring and summer. Suspend fertilizing in winter.
  • Pruning: Cut dry or damaged leaves at the base. To maintain a compact shape, pinch the tips of long stems. Cut stems can be used for propagation.
  • Propagation: Propagated by stem or tip cuttings, planted in moist substrate at 20-24°C. Cutting is simple and effective.

Dracaena godseffiana 'Silver' is ideal as a houseplant, decorating windowsills, offices, or tables. The variegated foliage with silver spots adds brightness to spaces, combining well with other tropical plants such as pothos or snake plant. It suits modern, minimalist interiors or low-light spaces. It can be used in decorative pots or as an accent plant.

Origin

Native to West Africa (Guinea, Sierra Leone), Dracaena godseffiana naturally grows in shaded tropical forests. The 'Silver' cultivar was selected for its silvery variegation, becoming popular in indoor gardening due to its decorative appearance and adaptability.

My Fave Sunscreen
Sun protection factor: 50 Sun Protection Factor (SPF), Size: 6 Ounce (Pack of 2)
I love this sunscreen. I bike ride a lot in the summer and I always bring sunscreen with me because I sweat and need to reapply. If I use a cream, my hands end up wet or greasy and I'm holding the handlbars, etc. So, using a spray is way better for me. I loooooooove the smell of this stuff. It smells of summer! The spray makes it easy to get my back while at the beach and while it's not insanely waterproof, it's certainly water resistant and lasts a long time. I like the SPF 50, because less isn't enough for me. They say going higher than 50 isn't any better, so I stick with 50 as my "go to." Buying the duo, as sold here, makes it a good value. Buying this product at a local drug store would cost twice as much. I easily go through both cans in a single summer.

Lightweight for every day
Color: Classic
This sunscreen is perfection! It glides on and absorbs quickly. Blends to your skin color. Hydrates as well as prevents sun damage. You need to use enough to prevent sun damage, so follow directions carefully. I put it on first thing every morning.

Highly recommend for pale sun worshippers
Color: Classic
My dermatologist recommends using zinc-based lotions to protect my skin from the harmful effects of the sun. This lotion doesn’t leave me and my husband looking like ashen, smelly zombies in an apocalyptic movie. Expensive but definitely worth the price if you have pale skin that burns easily. Hopefully a version for darker skin is on the horizon.

Love it! My favorite of their products yet!
Color: Classic, Color: Classic
I love it! I think this is my favorite of theirs. I like their tinted sunscreen too but that this one feels a lot lighter in my opinion. Ive mostly used mineral sunscreen only and this one is seriously good. To see if the white cast is okay, I made sure to put enough on my face - I apply a thin layer one my face each time, let it dries a little, put on another layer, until I have three layers in total of it. It blends in so well that I can’t say it leaves white cast on my face. With a mineral sunscreen, you would almost always have to expect a little bit of a lightened film on your skin unless you use a chemical sunscreen (which stings my eyes), I look for those that would still make your skin color look nature and not like a ghost. It honestly feels just as nice if not nicer than my all time favorite mineral sunscreen from another brand - I was sad to find that my face finally started reacting to that one because of the fragrance it has, but I’m glad it led me to this ColorScience sunscreen! This one is water resistant too - it just has everything that I want. I’m sticking to it! Updated: been using this for a few times now and still my absolute favorite. I wanted to show a few more pictures on how it looks on my skin compared with another brand (my former favorite). I also added how a Neutrogena mineral sunscreen looks on the back of my hand so you can see the ColorScience one really don’t have much white cast whatsoever. I tried to spread it out good though. And the scent - it’s the some as one of their products that I’ve tried. I don’t find it off putting as long as it’s not added fragrance I’m good.
