The Gardener's Guide to Growing and Storing Vegetable and Flower Seeds

Looking for something to add excitement and interest to your garden?  Try raising and saving seeds for your own vegetables and flowers!

Saving seeds is a time-honored tradition - one that more and more gardeners are rediscovering.  It can be as simple as growing a few extra peas or beans for next year's use or as challenging as wintering over cabbage heads, waiting for the flower stalks to poke up in the spring.

Any gardener can become a successful seed saver - the only limitations are your time, space, and interest.  And the benefits of growing and saving your own seeds are many:

  • You can save money on expensive yearly seed bills.

  • You can select seed each year from the plants nest suited to your garden and your particular growing conditions.

  • You can help preserve old-time and regional favorites - heirloom vegetables and flowers that your grandparents grew, but that are often hard to find these days.

  • You can share seeds from your own favorite flowers and vegetables with family, friends, neighbors, and other gardeners.

This book will tell you all you need to know about how to raise, harvest, and store seeds for the easiest-to-grow and most popular vegetables and ornamental plants.  Each vegetable and flower is discussed in detail.  And Saving Seedsanswers hundreds or frequently asked gardening questions:

  • Will cucumbers cross with melons or squash?

  • Do some weeds cross with vegetables?

  • Should I avoid raising hybrids for seed?

  • How can I raise seeds that will produce earlier crops?  Tastier crops?

Originally published in 1978 as Growing and Saving Vegetable Seeds, Marc Roger's popular and practical guide has now been thoroughly updated to include the best ornamental flowers to grow for seed.

Seed-saving can be a fascinating lifelong hobby for any serious (or frugal) home gardener.  And Saving Seeds can help you get started.

Best pigs ears on the market!
Size: Slivers (1.8 Pounds)
These are the best and biggest pigs ears on the market. I give my dogs 1 per day and they know exactly when it’s coming. They are, by far, their favorite treat. They’re not too stinky or greasy.

Happy dogs
Size: Whole Ears (Pack of 80)
I have two rescue dogs and one of them is a unrelenting 'I'm chewing everything in sight' pitbull. I've had her for a year and she is now three years old . I know this aggressive chewing will stop as she grows older but for now I find any snack that will keep her busy . I have bully sticks which are quite expensive and doesn't last as long as it should.I bought this 100 pack pig ears and of course they love it but it also takes her about the same amount of time to finish it as a 12 inch bully stick, which is a win in my book. These ears are cheaper than bully sticks and are healthier than rawhide chews . These pig ears come in different sizes but most of them are huge where I'm in need to search for a smaller one for my other dog since she is 50 lbs and not 80 lbs like my pitbull. If you need ones that are sliced smaller , then you're in luck because they also sell one with mixed whole and slices. I got the whole ears and I am very happy with the quality of them. It was sent in a sealed plastic bag within a box. Once opened there is no way to reseal them so be prepared to repackage or as I did, put them in a airtight container like the ones I use for their dog food. Hope this helps other dog lovers keep their doggos happy

Huge!
Size: Whole Ears (Pack of 60)
I always bought pig ears at Costco until they quit carrying them. My dogs were addicted at that point, and anything comparable was more than double the price. I ordered a few different brands on Amazon and they were either tiny, or the picture didn’t match what was delivered. I have a Rottweiler. He eats these like potato chips. I read reviews for these that were negative and was hesitant to buy them because of the negative reviews. My only complaint is that I also have a Basset Hound, and she buries these in my house because they’re too big for her to eat at one time.
