Zamioculcas zamiifolia 'Zamicro' – compact glossy foliage for low-light interiors

Zamioculcas zamiifolia 'Zamicro' is a dwarf cultivar of the classic ZZ plant, growing with tighter spacing, shorter stalks, and slightly smaller leaflets. Its rich green foliage remains just as glossy and sculptural, but the plant stays noticeably more compact, making it ideal for shelves, desks, or smaller spaces where vertical growth is limited. 'Zamicro' shares the same rugged traits as its larger cousin – drought resistance, tolerance for lower light, and near-zero maintenance needs – all packed into a smaller, denser form.

Leaf features and compact growth

  • Foliage shape: Paired oval leaflets on thick upright petioles
  • Color: Deep green, high-gloss surface that catches the light
  • Texture: Smooth and waxy, with consistent sheen
  • Growth habit: Clump-forming with shorter internodes and more dense leaf structure
  • Indoor size: Reaches 25 – 40 cm in height, making it one of the smallest ZZ cultivars

Native habitat and resilience profile

'Zamicro' is derived from Zamioculcas zamiifolia, a species native to the dry forests of eastern Africa. It naturally stores water in its rhizomes and thick petioles, surviving extended dry periods and dim environments without trouble. This cultivar has been selected specifically for tighter form and a smaller footprint, ideal for modern indoor spaces where size and durability matter.

  • Parent origin: Eastern Africa (Kenya to Tanzania)
  • Light range: Adaptable to low or medium-light environments
  • Growth speed: Very slow; produces only a few new shoots per year
  • Toxicity: Toxic if ingested – keep away from pets and children
  • Form: Upright, clumping with rounded, symmetrical shape

Zamioculcas 'Zamicro' care

  • Light: Handles low light well, but grows fastest in bright indirect conditions
  • Water: Water only when soil is fully dry – overwatering is the most common issue
  • Humidity: Tolerates dry air; no extra humidity required
  • Temperature: Keep between 18 – 26 °C; protect from cold air and frost
  • Soil: Fast-draining mix with sand, perlite, and composted bark
  • Repotting: Every 3 years or when rhizomes push against the pot walls
  • Fertilizer: Feed lightly once per month during spring/summer with diluted liquid feed
  • Propagation: By dividing rhizomes or rooting leaflets – both are slow but effective
  • Hydroponics: Can tolerate semi-hydro systems if transitioned gradually
  • Pruning: Cut back yellowing stalks at the base as needed to keep tidy

Common issues and solutions

  • Yellow leaves: Almost always caused by overwatering – let dry out and reduce frequency
  • No new growth: Normal for this cultivar; extremely slow-growing
  • Wrinkled or soft stems: Underwatering or long dry spells – water deeply, then resume schedule
  • Root rot: Caused by soggy soil or poor drainage – switch to a gritty mix immediately
  • Pests: Rare, but check for mealybugs at base or leaf joints

Extra notes and design tips

‘Zamicro’ is ideal for minimal or tight spaces – small side tables, windowsills, office setups, or under lighting setups. Its compact nature also works well in grouped arrangements with taller or trailing plants. You’ll barely need to touch it, and it’ll hold its shape and color year-round.

Etymology and cultivar history

Zamioculcas zamiifolia combines "Zamia" (a cycad genus) with "-culcas" from the outdated genus Colocasia. The species name “zamiifolia” refers to its foliage’s similarity to Zamia. The cultivar name ‘Zamicro’ emphasizes its compact, miniature size and slow-growth adaptation.

Strongly Scented
Size: 1.7 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Too strongly scented. It does nice things for the skin, but I truly wish it was fragrance-free

Highly recommended as a 2nd phone or primary phone if your needs are not too demanding
Color: Blue
I was looking for a small phone to replace my Jelly Pro/Palm. This phone resolves all the issues with thes older phones in regards to performance. Phone is very responsive and has minimum/no lag for my general use. The screen is clear and usable, though viewing take a slight hit when at more extreme angles. With Android 13 loaded, it allows me to use Android auto (Android 8 and the Jelly Pro/Palm doesn't support this ability). Unihertz has published that the phone will get Android 16 in April, 2026, bringing the OS up-to-date. Touch screen works better than either of the older phones and I have had no issues typing. Battery is much better than the prior phones, lasting about slightly less than my Pixel 9a. Charging is very quick given the small battery size the max charging speed of the phone. The phone is thicker than the other phones, but overall thickness actually makes the phone easier to handle. The phone works fine with T-Mobile. CONS The buttons are not placed well for me as a right-hander. It is awkward to reach the volume buttons. Also, the fingerprint reader is badly placed for such a small phone. I have to awkwardly squinch my finger to reach it. Additionally, it doesn't always read correctly. I do believe the camera is slightly better, but not close to a normal sized phone. It will work in a pinch, but wouldn't use it on vacation for memories I wanted to keep. The phone is missing the ability to support an eSim. The phone is larger and heavier than the older 2 phones, but this allows for the larger battery/longer run times. Also, the case it difficult to take off the first time to put in your SIM because of the shape of the phone. This is a great 2nd phone for use around your normal area of business or when exercising. If you take one phone when you travel, I would get a more flexible standard phone that supports eSim and has a camera that takes high quality pictures/video.

Sensible Phone.
Color: Blue
This is a life-changing device. Thank you, Unihertz for making it. It's really helpful if you have small hands and are tired of (physically and mentally) using a large phone. I have a behemoth in the form of S24 Ultra. I juts got so frustrated one day about its size and ordered this device. It's working great with my Mint Mobile; which uses T-Mobile's network. Apparently, AT&T doesn't work on this; so, watch out for that one. The size is perfect for reaching the top corners of the screen. Personally, I am able to type precisely. Google Keyboard's swiping function, as on other devices, helps greatly here too. It's a pleasure to hold a device of this size in my hands while making calls once again; takes me back to my dumb phone era days. It's perfect for not doom scrolling. The programmable button is great to save time. You can set it to any app you want. It offers three shortcuts with that button: a short click, a long press, and a double click. My short click opens up calculator; the long press activates flashlight (and turns it off); the double click opens up a third party timer app. I'm impressed by all the other features that device is able to house-- like, decibel level measuring app, a bubble level app, of course the IR blaster, a native compass app, etc. It's a thoughtful phone that works like a tool, rather than like a landmine of distraction and doom scrolling. It also works great with my Airpods. The fingerprint reader on my unit requires a precise placement of my finger. It's not too forgiving.

Great for decreasing screen time, a great phone with great features
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
I love the form factor of this phone. Perfect for those trying to decrease time spent online. Battery life is very good considering how small the phone is. I could often go 2 days without charging. Most apps work well, would occasionally have to turn the screen landscape to use some apps. My one complaint. The water resistance was not great in my experience. I took it on a run, and some sweat migrated between the screen and plastic case, and it was toast. (Pictured) I understand obviously phones can’t get wet, but when I tell you it was minimal. I truly loved this device…….if they would be willing to fix mine or send me another I would be ecstatic. If a version with better water resistance is released I will be buying.

Jelly Star mini smartphone is a bundle of joy
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
I've been using the Jelly Star about a week now and have no regrets about my purchase. I have the blue color and it's really pretty. This phone is as good as the reviews I researched said it was. Very fast, has all features of a regular smart phone but easy to hold in one hand and carry in pocket. This phone is 3/4" thick with a screen 2.75" x 1.5" and comes with a protective case. Good connection with T-Mobile cell towers, nice variety of ring tones, decent camera for snapshots. When it first arrived I was hesitant to commit, worried that with the tiny print I would struggle, but now that I got it connected I'm really happy with it. I'm old enough that without reading glasses, I need to squint to see the print in text messages, but it has a zoom feature that works well once you get used to it, and I plan to use other devices for viewing the images I take with it. Bought it mainly to have as a basic communication device that isn't bulky/in the way all the time. Don't have to constantly charge the battery either. Only using the phone for calls, texts, and WhatsApp; so far only need to charge it every 3 days. I took the time to research online how to stop apps from running in the background which should also help conserve the battery. I'm looking forward to loading music on it and maybe even taking it for a run once I get the headphones and armband accessories. I recommend it.
