(Kolkwitzia amabilis) Perennial. Deciduous. Zones 4-8.

The Beauty Bush lives up to its name with an impressive fountain-like spray of pink blossoms in a long-lasting Spring display! Even when the main show is over, its beautiful and unique shape is like a vase spilling over.

A member of the honeysuckle family and native to central China, Beauty Bush is easy and quick to grow. The shrub is grown mostly for its dazzling flowers, but is quite lovely year round with its height (6-10 feet), unique shape, and deep green bronze tipped foliage that transforms to a red-orange in Fall.

It blooms a bit later than other Spring shrubs and continues into June in some areas. The flowers are bell-shaped, pink with yellow throats, and appear in small clusters. The plethora of blossoms attract tons of birds, bees, and hummingbirds!

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

For best results, direct sow seeds outdoors in the Fall.  If sowing indoors…

SEED PRETREATMENT: Soak seeds in water for 24 hours. Mix seeds with a moistened grow medium equal to 3-4 times seed volume. Place in a plastic bag, covered tray/cells or container.

STRATIFICATION: 120 days cold/moist (5°C). Place plastic bag with seeds and soil in your refrigerator, Periodically for even moisture and germination.

POST-STRATIFICATION: Sow stratified seeds 1/4” deep, ideally in a peat/perlite mix. Alternating soil temperatures during the day (25°C) and night (18°C) aids germination. Water evenly and regularly.

GERMINATION: Germination in Spring though some seeds may not sprout until the following years spring.

This! Book! Rocks!
Format: Paperback
If you enjoy laughing, having fun with your friends and family, and doing cool stuff, you will love Lynda Barry's Making Comics. This is a thoughtful and complete recap of her live class at the University of Wisconsin, includes much of her substantial thought and philosophy on the role of image making in human evolution, and is full of her (and her students') amazing artwork; but it's also full of excessively FUN drawing exercises that are wonderful for sucky drawers as well as professional artists. We dig this book so bad!!! Best gift I've given myself in a million years!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe I had a little bit forgotten how much I! Love! Lynda! Barry!!!!! So if you wish you could go move to Wisconsin and take her class like I do, instead just save the planet the extra greenhouse gases and get this book instead and do the class at your kitchen table with your friends!!! Maybe also order it from your local groovy independent bookstore so you can stick it to the man!!!

This Book Will Make You Happy
Format: Paperback
This book is beautiful, inspiring and uplifting. I happen to be someone who never drew very but wants to draw again. It's perfect for me. However, even if I didn't have an interest in drawing, the art, stories and information are compelling and warm. I truly believe anyone will enjoy this book. I first learned of the amazing Lynda Barry when I was a kid reading Ernie Pook's Comeek. I have since read everything Lynda Barry has ever published - and every bit is a treasure. There is a kindness, wisdom, openness and compassion in everything she does. For me, her work is like a tonic and a salve. This book comes to me at the perfect time - the most painful and difficult year of my life. It is powerful and soothing. This is a work you will love and go back to again and again.

Such a fun book
Format: Paperback
If you are looking to get back into drawing or just spark creativity, this is the perfect book to get started with. It's not necessarily a direct instruction book - so you need to be patient and EXPLORE. The only thing that would make it more perfect is if someone came up with a deck of attendance card prompts for when you run out of your own ideas!
