Like all prickly pears, it has glochids (tiny hair-like spines that can be irritating) so this is a “look, don’t touch” kind of plant.

How to Grow Indoors

Light
Bright light with as much direct sun as you can give it. A south- or west-facing window is ideal. Strong light encourages compact growth and rich purple tones.

Water
Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry out completely. During winter or low-light periods, water very sparingly. Overwatering is the fastest way to lose this plant.

Soil
Fast-draining cactus soil is essential. Adding extra pumice or coarse sand improves drainage further.

Temperature
Prefers warm conditions but tolerates cool nights well. Protect from frost indoors.

Humidity
No special requirements. Average indoor humidity is perfect.

Fertilizer
Optional. If desired, feed lightly with a diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice during spring and summer.

Growth Habit
Slow to moderate. Pads stack gradually, forming a low, sculptural clump over time.

How to Grow Outdoors

(San Francisco–specific)

Opuntia ‘Baby Rita’ does very well outdoors in San Francisco.

Under strong light and outdoor conditions, mature plants may produce bright pink-magenta flowers in spring or early summer, followed by small ornamental fruits.

Pricey for a towel holder, but a great value for the money. Like everyone else, I’ve tried all types of towel holders that didn’t work or were tricky to replace the rolls. The ear type that have two spring loaded arms to hold the roll, if you pull too hard the roll pops out and the towels go flying. The type that has 2 arms and a rod that goes through the roll. Pain in the #$@ to detach and reattach for roll changes. Slip on type with a post and silicon fins on the post to hold the towels. Not good for jumbo rolls and the other rolls fits on loosely and sometimes a simple tug to detach a towel gets you a handful as it spins away. So I saw this one, hesitated at the price, but based on reviews decided to give it a spin, ( sorry about the pun). It holds the towels firmly thanks to the springy fins attached to the center post. Sized for all rolls, even the jumbo. Stays anchored to the counter with the suction sups. And, dispenses towels with a simple tug with one hand. No need to hold the roll, this baby does what it says. I like the sleek look and the stainless steel finish. As to the cost, if I had bought this one instead of all its failed predecessors, I would have saved money. Buy it, you won’t be sorry

I give this SMARTAKE paper towel holder 4 stars. Overall, it's a very good product that I would recommend, but it has one minor drawback that takes away a star. The Positives Quality and Stability: The holder feels good quality, and the material (steel) is sturdy. Once placed on the counter, it's stable and adheres well to the surface. Assembly and Use: It was easy to put together; just read the instruction manual. I confirm that it works well even with large paper towel rolls. As the paper gets used up, this piece doesn't do its job properly, and the paper unwinds more than it should.
