All the Details You Need to Know
The Story Behind This Plant
Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, Crotons are members of the spurge family. The Mammy variety is specifically prized in tropical landscaping and indoor gardening for its reliable "mounding" habit and the intense curl of its leaves. Historically, Crotons have been symbols of change and boldness due to their dramatic color shifts. In their natural habitat, they can grow into large shrubs, but as an indoor companion, they remain perfectly sized for your favorite decorative pot.
How to Keep It Happy
Crotons have a reputation for being expressive, but once you meet their light and water needs, they are incredibly rewarding:
- Light: Light is everything! To maintain those vivid reds and yellows, the Mammy needs bright, indirect light or even a few hours of direct morning sun. In low light, the new leaves will grow in plain green.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. If the plant gets too dry, it may drop its lower leaves to signal its thirst.
- Humidity: Being a tropical native, it loves humidity. Misting frequently or using a pebble tray is highly recommended, especially during the dry winter months in Canada.
- Temperature: Keep it warm! Crotons are sensitive to cold. Ensure it stays away from drafty doors or windows where temperatures drop below 15°C.
- Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix that retains a bit of moisture without becoming waterlogged.
What to Do About Pests
Because Crotons love humidity, keeping the air moist is your best defense against common pests. Regularly wiping the leaves also helps keep the plant healthy.
- Spider Mites: These are the most common visitors if the air is too dry. Look for tiny webs or a "dusty" appearance on the leaf undersides. Our Guide
- Mealybugs: Look for white, cottony tufts in the leaf joints. Our Guide
- Scale: Small, brown bumps on the stems. Wiping with neem oil or insecticidal soap usually does the trick. Our Guide

Common Questions & Expert Tips
Helping you find the best care answers quickly.
Why are the leaves falling off my Croton Mammy?
Crotons are famous for dropping leaves when they are stressed. This usually happens after a sudden move, a cold draft, or if the soil has dried out too much. Consistency is key—pick a bright, warm spot and keep the moisture levels steady.
How do I make my Croton leaves more colourful?
If your Croton Mammy is turning mostly green, it is asking for more light. The intense red and orange pigments are a natural reaction to bright sunlight. Moving it closer to a south or west-facing window will help those colors pop.
Is the Croton Mammy toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, Crotons are toxic if ingested and their sap can cause skin irritation. It is best to keep this plant on a high shelf or in a room where pets cannot reach it.
How often should I mist my Croton Mammy in winter?
During the dry Canadian winter, misting every day or every other day is a great practice. Using a humidifier nearby is even better to prevent the leaf tips from browning and to keep spider mites away.
