Ocotillo 🌵🔥
(Fouquieria splendens)
An Iconic Desert Statement Plant
The Ocotillo is one of the most recognizable and dramatic plants of the Sonoran and Chihuahuan Deserts. Native to the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico, this architectural desert native delivers bold vertical form, seasonal greenery, and spectacular fiery blooms that stop people in their tracks.
🌵 Key Features & Growing Habits
Dramatic Desert Form 🌿
Ocotillo grows as a cluster of upright, whip-like canes rising from a central base. When rainfall arrives, the plant quickly leafs out in vibrant green; during dry periods, it drops its leaves while maintaining a striking, sculptural silhouette.
Fiery Seasonal Blooms 🔥
In spring—and often again after summer rains—Ocotillo produces vivid red-orange tubular flowers at the tips of each cane. These blooms are a magnet for hummingbirds and pollinators.
Cold Hardy & Desert Tough ❄️
Once established, Ocotillo tolerates temperatures down to approximately 10°F and performs well in USDA zones 7–10. It thrives in intense heat, full sun, and well-draining soil.
Drought-Deciduous & Water-Wise 💧
Ocotillo is naturally adapted to arid climates. It conserves water by shedding leaves during dry spells, making it ideal for xeriscaping and low-water landscapes.
