Isatis tinctoria

Origin: Europe

Improvement status: Cultivated material

Seeds per packet: ~50

Germination tested 11/2023: 70%

Life cycle: Biennial or Perennial

Woad is the most famous "Old World" blue dye plant, once used throughout the "Western World" until it was largely replaced by indigo in the sixteenth and seventeeth centuries (in fact, the dye from woad is also called indigo). It was used mainly for dying fabric, but also for body paint. It is experiencing something of a revival as a natural dye for artisanal fabric-makers. It is in the brassica family and has pretty yellow flowers. The roots of woad have long been used in traditional Chinese medicine, for a wide range of ailments, commonly made into tea. The leaves are edible, though quite bitter (the flavor is said to improve after prolonged soaking/leaching). It is a biennial or short-lived perennial native to Europe. It has naturalized and become a problematic invasive plant in Western North America, so we will not send seeds to western states. Please check your state's regulations before ordering this fascinating plant. Our seed comes from Aaron Parker of Edgewood Nursery in Maine.

GROWING TIPS: Soak seeds at room temp for 24 hours before direct sowing.

Amazon Essentials Mens shirt review - Good shirt, great value.
Fit Type: Slim Fit, Color: Grey, Size: X-Large
First, this is Oxford. This is a tough fabric that looks a little like pinpoint and feels a little like flannel. That is, it does not have the sheen of a dress shirt and is not as thick and soft as flannel. It hits a nice spot in between. The fabric is soft enough and thick enough to wear casually in the heat of summer. (It is cooler than a very thin and very cheap shirt due to it's absorbancy.) The fabric appears and feels to be quality. The cut is good for me. It is tailored enough to look good tucked in and roomy enough for work and play. The seams are doubled and good quality. I did not find mid seam knots, broken threads, etc. Seams are likely very durable. The Goodthreads shirt is a little more expensive. It is a little thicker and softer. It is almost a flannel. However, the thickness and softness caused it to shrink more in the dryer. It loosened OK as I wore it, but I think after multiple washings and dryings, the Goodthreads may get a little tight. I have no concerns with the Essentials. Good shirt.

I am thoroughly impressed with this Amazon Essentials white shirt. For the price, the quality is outstanding. The fabric feels soft, breathable, and has a good weight to it

Nice shirt, great price.
Fit Type: Regular Fit, Color: White, Size: Medium
Worn it twice and I find it very comfortable. I wear it outside and casually to protect my arms and neck from the sun and find it more comfortable than a long sleeve t-shirt. The price is comparable. If I was to wear it to the office it would have to be ironed. I bought one shirt to try it and I will be buying more.

Nice shirt!
Fit Type: Regular Fit, Color: White, Size: X-Large
I added one of these shirts to another order just to see if they were any good. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. It fits perfectly and looks pretty nice for a low cost casual dress shirt. Materials seem decent quality. Comfortable, soft fabric. Didn’t shrink too much in the washer and dryer. We’ll see how it holds up long term but so far so good
