Philodendron Florida Ghost Care Instructions

Philodendron Florida Ghost Light Requirements

Philodendron Florida Ghost's thrive in bright indirect sunlight, like many other philodendrons. Placing them a few feet from a window will give them with enough sun to grow strong. They cannot survive in direct sunlight, especially the afternoon sun. Once the morning sun has risen it gets too hot and is will scorch leaves on your plant.

During the winter and spring seasons your philodendron can accept a bit of direct sunlight in a window as those months are more overcast, however the summer's sun will definitely be too strong.

Some people place their philodendron's in lower light conditions, and while it is true that they can live there, it is not completely optimal. They will grow faster in brighter light and brighter rooms.

How much water does a Philodendron Florida Ghost need?

Here at Gold Leaf Botanicals, we have found the best results when we water once the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Your plant needs air! When the soil dries it allows air to flow into the soil and the roots. This not only prevents root rot, but also helps the plant grow stronger roots.

Watering once or twice a week is the most common for this style of plant, but going two or three weeks is not uncommon. A Florida Ghost is a drought-tolerant plant, and if you forget to water it there is no need to worry.

If your Florida Ghost is in a very bright room, windows on multiple sides, or in a warmer room due to summer, you will have to water more often. The extra energy from the sun means the plant will also use more water.

In the winter months your plant will receive less sun, so let the plant start to droop a little to find out when it's time to water again. A little drooping is perfectly natural and will not harm your plant.

Humidity a Florida Ghost likes

The average Canadian home has a humidity around 30% to 40%, and that is great for your Florida Ghost. If you want to maximize your plants' potential, humidity up around 50% and 60% is optimal.

Getting humidity higher is easy! A humid bathroom or a window in the kitchen will tend to have more humidity than a living room, so feel free to keep your plants in the bathroom if the lighting allows for it.

Soil requirements for a Philodendron Florida Ghost

Florida Ghost's should be potted with a good soil that allows for drainage. Most "well-draining" soils you find in garden centres will do just fine.

Adding a handful or two of perlite into the soil mix will help your soil retain and disperse water if you wanted to go the extra mile, but it's completely optional.

If you want to add fertilizer, check out our all natural Liqui-Dirt.

Family and Information

Philodendrons originate from warm and humid regions in the North, Central, and South Americas where they grow in rain forests and along river banks. Over the centuries, philodendrons have been bred and cross-bred, allowing them to live in conditions unusual to them

This allows your Philodendron Florida Ghost to live in the Canadian climate and inside Canadian homes without trouble.

Florida Ghost leaves emerge from the red petioles as a single lobe. As they mature, they develop unique lobes and then turn from bright white to cream, and then various shades of green until they settle as a solid, dark green.

Is a Philodendron Florida Ghost Pet Friendly?

Like other Philodendron's the Florida Ghost has a toxicity level of mild to moderate for cats and dogs. Your pet will experience irritation of the mouth which is usually enough to prevent them from nibbling on your plant in the future.

As always, we recommend that you keep your plants out of your pets reach.

Philodendron Florida Ghost Propagation

Propagating a Florida Ghost is very simple to do. Cut the stem of your Philodendron about 2 inches below a grouping of leaves. Be sure that there are at least two leaves attached to the stem, and more is usually better.

Put the stem directly into the soil of your choice, and you can read more about the proper soil above.

Water the soil and keep it slightly moist as your Philodendron puts out new roots.

You can also do a water-propagation, where you place the cut stem into a clear jar of water for a few weeks. The cutting will make new roots which you can then move to soil.

Growth and Pruning Tips

To enhance the beauty of your Philodendron Florida Ghost you may prune it as you see fit. This allows your plant to get bushier by growing new leaves on it's existing vines, and you will get rid of the old and damaged leaves.

As always, clean your pruning tools will ensure that you do not spread bacteria during the process. Be sure to remove a small amount of leaves at a time so you do not shock the plant.

If a plant feels that it is damaged too much, it may hinder growth, so only prune from time to time.

Conclusion

A Philodendron Florida Ghost is an ideal and low-maintenance house plant for any indoor grower. There are many different varieties of Philodendron's to choose from, and they are loved for their unique tropical look.

An incredible guide for your Advent journey.
Format: Paperback
Thank you Miriam for bringing us this beautiful and deep guide for our Advent journey. I used it for the first time in 2023, and will definitely be using it again in 2024. I loved and looked forward to every day that I sat with the daily passage. Miriam guides us into daily Scripture, and includes questions for us to meditate on and apply those passages. In addition, she adds her own meditation, which offers a rich perspective. It is accompanied by Lilias Trotter's own perspective through her words and wisdom and gorgeous art. The author invites us into self-reflection multiple times through each daily passage and includes poetry and song that binds each daily message. I will definitely give these as gifts for next year, and I am so looking forward to walking through it again next Advent. It will be interesting to see the Lord's living and active wisdom reveal itself year after year. I would highly recommend keeping a journal as you dive in to this rich, rewarding journey.

Good news, bad news.
Format: Paperback
I like the product, but because it was inadequately packaged, the top of the book is imperfect. It's certainly readable, but if I am paying full price, I expect a perfect copy.

Deep Into the Financial Nuts and Bolts
Format: Paperback
This a very, very informative book about the financial crash of 2008 and its lengthy recovery. The British author is a fine writer and definitely appears to master the subject. His background is as an economic historian and his approach to the financial collapse is thru the lens of political economy. For a European, he is very charitable towards the failures of the US markets and the responses of the US govt in the crisis. In fact, he is much more critical of the Germans and the British and the EU govts in their involvement in the crisis and their failure to more effectively guide the Eurozone out of the financial crisis. The book is somewhat dense and daunting and is 616 pages of text. Definitly not for the faint of heart or those who are not somewhat financially and economically literate. It does not lend itself to speed reading. A glossary and list of abbreviations would have been very helpful--as other commenters have suggested. Abbreviated acronyms of organizations, treaties, agreements, govt agencies, etc. come flying fast and furious. Still, with due and diligent effort on the part of the reader, you can see how very well the author knits his technocratic financial narrative together. The negative reviews often seem poorly informed. It's a difficult book to get thru. Some readers appear to dislike the author because he is a Keynesian liberal. I understand that, but they should note that he tends to be very positive about US govt financial leadership leading the world out of the crisis. Some don't like the fact that he thinks Trump is a grifter. Unfortunately, Trump is, irrefutably, a grifter and a con man. The only areas where I found myself disagreeing with the author were on the issues of immigration and protectionism. The Eurozone and the US cannot support unrestricted immigration. There are too many millions in the world of 8 billion people who would kick down the gateways of either entitity to gain entry. Unrestricted immigration is an existential threat to all the Western countries involved. Sober assessment of reality is something other than "racist". "Realistic" is a far more accurate term. The author is a classic liberal and against national "protectionism". However, this is 2023. The book was written in 2017. Much water has passed under the bridge since then. Countries are political entities with borders. Too often--as the writer points out--economic and financial advisors forget the "political" part of "political economy". Trump's legions are there to remind them. At least they are good for something. Protecting your economy from essential foreign supply chain failures and from hostile foreign competitors is just good governance. And insuring that others share in general prosperity besides coastal elites is another part of good governance. "Flyover Country" is every bit as important as the two coasts. Probably more so. Never forget the "political" part of "political economy".

A Complete Autopsy of the 2008 Financial Crash and the Government Response
Format: Hardcover
First, let me say that I can't believe one person wrote this entire book. Tooze handles everything - economics, finance, politics, diplomacy, public policy, housing, discrimination, trading platforms - and does it expertly. The author's detailed understanding of such a wide arrange of topics is dazzling, especially his handle on inscrutable national bank mechanics. Second, if you want a macro understanding of how governments responded to the 2008 financial crisis and how these responses produced such wildly differing results, read this book. The analysis at times is like eating sawdust and it is excruciatingly detailed. There were entire chapters on the European side of the crises that I felt were repetitive and could possibly be removed from the book without losing too much. However, clearly Tooze has done his homework and the data underlying his conclusions is vast. Third, I learned a lot and I had previously read "Too Big to Fail" by Sorkin and some other lesser known books on the recession. Tooze handles everything from a policy perspective and his data support his overarching theme: the US had a cohesive, massive stimulus program that probably could have gone further, while the EU responded in nibbles. The US rebounded well, albeit not perfectly while the EU went from crises to crises. He also shows that there were massive consequences from the bailout of the financial system: Brexit and cartoonish clown politicians like Trump in the US, and Farage in the EU, who are supported at their roots by a dangerously racist and nationalistic surge of those left behind by the modern global economy. This is an excellent read.

It's good financial history
Format: Hardcover
especially how the EURO members' values slow down negotiations. I hardly came upon the fluidness in their story line post 2008 in this book, like I do the USAs through media. The FED is king in the USA in both knowledge and strategy (Powell Doctrine). A nice read but it could be shorter; my opinion of course!
