In the wild, it grows along the ground or trails over rocky ledges, rooting at nodes when conditions allow. It produces long, slender stems lined with spherical, bead-like leaves that store water. This variegated form shows green, cream, and sometimes pale yellow tones due to reduced chlorophyll in parts of the leaves.

Stems can grow over a metre long, with leaves spaced to maximise sunlight exposure while reducing water loss. Each leaf has a small translucent window that lets light reach deeper tissues, aiding photosynthesis. Variegated plants often grow more slowly than green forms, as non-green areas produce less energy.

Flowering occurs when mature, often in cooler months with good light and a short dry period. The small, brush-like blooms are white with red stamens and have a light cinnamon scent. In cultivation, blooms are more likely when seasonal conditions mimic those of its native range.
