How to Care for Dieffenbachia ‘Maui Wowie’

Watering

Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry. Avoid overwatering, as Dieffenbachia is susceptible to root rot. Ensure the pot has proper drainage.

Sunlight

Prefers bright, indirect light, but can tolerate lower light conditions. Too much direct sunlight may scorch its leaves, while too little light can cause leggy growth.

Temperature

Thrives in warm temperatures between 65°F-80°F (18°C-27°C). Keep away from cold drafts, heaters, and air conditioners.

Humidity

Enjoys moderate to high humidity. If the air is dry, consider misting the leaves occasionally or placing a humidity tray nearby.

Toxicity

Dieffenbachia ‘Maui Wowie’ is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Keep it out of reach of children and animals.

Fertilizer

Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in fall and winter.

Growth Rate

A moderate grower that can reach 2-3 feet indoors with proper care. Pruning can help maintain a compact shape.

Pruning

Trim any yellowing or damaged leaves to keep the plant looking fresh and encourage new growth.

Propagation

Easily propagated through stem cuttings. Cut a healthy stem, allow it to callous for a few hours, and plant it in moist soil.

Soil Mix

Prefers a well-draining, nutrient-rich soil mix. A blend of potting soil, perlite, and peat moss works best.

Repotting

Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot slightly larger than the current one.

Common Pests

Watch for spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Wipe the leaves regularly and treat infestations with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Common Problems

• Yellowing leaves – Often caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Adjust watering schedule as needed.
• Brown leaf tips – Can be a sign of low humidity or fluoride in tap water. Use filtered water and increase humidity.
• Drooping leaves – May indicate underwatering or exposure to cold drafts. Check soil moisture and adjust placement.
