Born near outside of Milan, Italy, Helena Perpenti (1764 - 1846) at first followed her physician father into a career in medicine. After developing a smallpox vaccine, she became an inventor. After raising 15 children in Como, Italy, she switched the focus of her work to botany, studying the flora of the Lake Como region.
