The Xanadu is as exotic looking a Philodendron as the name suggests; unlike its fellow philos, this one stands out for having branching, finger-like leaves which look like they belong to a forgotten age- but are very much alive and kicking, and can even thrive in your living room! In its natural habitat, this plant creeps along the ground or climbs up trees, so likes indirect light best and won't mind a spot of shade, just as long as it's not next to a radiator which would dry it out. These glossy green leaves will grow wide and bushy, and are the perfect fit for that big empty space in your home. Choose the Philo xanadu to bring a piece of tropical rainforest into your home and fill a room with its verdant foliage.

Scientific Name
Philodendron xanadu (exotic tree-hugger)

Has also been known as Thaumatophyllum xanadu, but P. xanadu is now the accepted scientific name.

Common Names
Winterbourn, Xanadu

Origin
The species is from tropica South America, but this cultivar was first seen in Australia

Light
Place in bright indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight (except maybe an hour per day in winter when it's weaker!) as this can scorch the leaves.

Water
Allow the top two inches of soil to dry out in between waterings (these plants are easy-going so if you wait a little longer to water don't panic!). Ensure good drainage and don't allow to sit in water.

Humidity
Appreciates above average humidity, but will do just fine in most standard household humidity. Will appreciate an occasional misting, especially if in a dryer spot. Water less in darker areas.

Soil
Use a chunky, well draining mix. Repot every two years in spring as the plant grows.

Food
Will benefit from a light feed throughout spring and summer- especially since it takes a lot of energy to produce such beautiful foliage!

Temperature
Average household temperatures of about 18-28° are fine- try not to place somewhere where temperatures dip below 12°C for extended periods.

Pet-safe
No, this plant is toxic to pets and small humans.

Sprouts Top Tips
Water with tepid rather than cold water to avoid shocking the plant. Rotate it now and then to promote even growth. Avoid draughty spots.

Not for "chewers" or puppies.
The toy is not "ruff and tuff", at all. Puppy had it torn to bits in just a few minutes. Nothing like handing your dog the toy while you finish unloading groceries only to come back and it looks like it snowed stuffing in your living room. It's made of a very thin material and is quite flimsy. Won't be buying this brand again. Might be good for an older dog who just wants to carry it around or play fetch. Although it's so light and flimsy, throwing it any farther than a few yards probably wouldn't work...

Favorite Handy Toy
This snake has been around our house for years! My shitzu/maltease dog is tiny, and he has a small mouth, but I call him Diablo! He loves to growl and act like a horrible terror when it comes to fighting over a little squeaky toy, and we use the snake to try to "push" the little toy away from his mouth. He loves to bite the snake and pull on it viciously. The snake has tiny holes in it, but has pretty much stayed intact. I am getting ready to add more stuffing inside it so it won't be so floppy. years of use have flattened it out. I love this thing. Well worth the money for a small-mouthed dog. The squeaker in the head was fun while it lasted, but the beauty of this snake is its shape and versatility as a pull on, and sneak up behind toy.
