Scientific name: Sedum rubrotinctum
Common names: Jelly Bean Plant, Pork and Beans, Christmas Cheer
It’s a succulent plant in the Crassulaceae family, native to Mexico. It’s popular because of its cute, bean-shaped leaves that change color under sunlight — turning red or pink at the tips, hence the name rubrotinctum (Latin for “red-tinted”).
🌱 Appearance
- Leaves: Small, plump, jelly-bean–like, about 2 cm long.
- Color: Green in shade; tips turn red or bronze in bright sunlight or cool temperatures.
- Growth habit: Low-growing, trailing stems that can reach 15–20 cm tall and spread wide.
- Flowers: Small, yellow, star-shaped blooms, usually appearing in spring.
🌤️ Care Tips
|
Aspect |
Recommendation |
|
Light |
Full sun to bright, indirect light. (More sun = redder leaves) |
|
Soil |
Well-draining succulent/cactus mix. You can add perlite or sand. |
|
Watering |
Let soil dry completely before watering. Overwatering causes rot. |
|
Temperature |
Prefers 18–30°C (65–85°F); protect from frost. |
|
Propagation |
Very easy — from leaf or stem cuttings. Just let cuttings dry a few days before planting. |
|
Fertilizer |
Optional; use diluted succulent fertilizer during growing season (spring/summer). |
⚠️ Common Problems
- Overwatering: Leaves become mushy, translucent, or fall off.
- Too little light: Plant stretches (etiolation) and loses its red color.
- Cold damage: Leaves can shrivel or fall off if exposed to frost.
