Rhipsalis baccifera

Rhipsalis baccifera, often called mistletoe cactus, is a trailing epiphytic cactus with long, narrow, cylindrical green stems. It grows as a forest cactus, with pendent stems that can lengthen into a fine cascade in a hanging pot or raised planter.

Small pale flowers can be followed by berry-like white to pinkish fruits on mature plants. In a pot, it forms a relaxed curtain of jointed stems, with firmness, colour and stem texture showing how well the roots are taking up water.

Rhipsalis baccifera stem profile

  • Plant type: Epiphytic tropical cactus with pendent cylindrical stems.
  • Stem shape: Long, slender, green, rounded stems with small areoles.
  • Growth habit: Cascading and branching in hanging or elevated pots.
  • Flowers and fruit: Mature plants can produce small pale flowers followed by berry-like white to pinkish fruits.
  • Texture: Fine, flexible stem growth with small areoles and a smooth green surface.
  • Pot behaviour: Trailing growth that needs bright filtered light and airy substrate.

How Rhipsalis baccifera trails in a pot

Rhipsalis baccifera grows naturally as an epiphyte or lithophyte across parts of tropical and subtropical America, Africa and Sri Lanka. Its stems hang from trees or rock surfaces, while the fine roots sit in loose organic debris with air and fast drainage around them.

The stems can become very long with age. Firm green stems usually indicate balanced watering, while wrinkled, puckered or limp stems point to drought stress, root stress or a substrate that has stayed wet for too long.

Trailing-stem care for Rhipsalis baccifera

  • Light: Place in bright filtered light; harsh direct sun can mark the narrow green stems.
  • Watering: Water when the upper part of the substrate has dried and the pot still feels lightly moist below.
  • Humidity: Moderate to higher humidity keeps the long stems from drying too quickly in warm indoor air.
  • Temperature: Keep warm, ideally above 16 °C, and protect from cold wet substrate.
  • Substrate: Use an airy, fast-draining mix with fine bark, mineral particles and some organic matter.
  • Pot choice: A pot with drainage holes reduces wet-root stress around the fine epiphytic root system.
  • Repotting: Repot when the mix compacts or dries unevenly; fine roots recover better in a loose fresh substrate.
  • Fertilising: Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted cactus or houseplant fertiliser.
  • Pruning: Trim overlong stems above a joint to keep the plant balanced and encourage fresh branching.
  • Propagation: Stem cuttings root readily after the cut end has dried briefly before planting.
  • Mineral substrates: Semi-hydro or mineral substrates can be used when moisture is kept even and excess water is not left stagnant around the roots.
  • Growth rate: Growth is usually moderate indoors, faster with warmth, filtered light and consistent root aeration.

Rhipsalis baccifera troubleshooting

  • Wrinkled stems: Puckering can come from dry roots, compacted substrate or root loss after overwatering.
  • Soft yellow stems: Softening and yellowing usually point to wet roots or cold, heavy substrate.
  • Brown patches: Sudden bright sun can scorch exposed stems, especially close to glass.
  • Stem drop: Segment loss can follow drying stress, transport stress or a sharp change in light and moisture.
  • Pests: Mealybugs and scale can settle around joints and areoles; check the stems closely during routine watering.

Rhipsalis baccifera safety note

Rhipsalis baccifera is usually kept as a pet-safe houseplant. Chewing the long trailing stems can still cause mild stomach upset.

Rhipsalis baccifera name and botany

Rhipsalis baccifera is an accepted species in Cactaceae. The genus name Rhipsalis is linked to Greek rhips, referring to wickerwork or interlaced branching, while baccifera means berry-bearing and refers to the small berry-like fruits.

Almost perfection
Color: Khaki, Size: XX-Large
I have really liked this polo the fit is great material is so lightweight and breathable Chef's kiss. the one thing i didn't like is the white accent parts are like heat applied and peeled off after 2 washes it doesn't do anything to the polo but still a little disappointing i just peeled the rest of them off so quality leaves a little bit to be desired there. i wish they didn't include them and it would be 5/5 for me but if after 4 or 5 wears and 2 washes it peels off that is a little disappointing

This Shirt Is So Cozy My Husband Loves It — Perfect Fit and Style!
Color: Turquoise, Size: X-Large
I recently picked up the Alex Vando Men’s Golf Shirt, and I have to say, it has quickly become one of my husband’s favorites in his wardrobe. From the moment he tried it on, he raved about how soft and comfortable it feels. The material is lightweight and breathable, yet it doesn’t feel flimsy — it strikes the perfect balance for both everyday wear and active use. The moisture-wicking and quick-dry properties are a game-changer. He’s worn it for golf, casual outings, and even on warmer days, and it keeps him cool and dry without sticking uncomfortably. The UPF30+ is an added bonus for sunny days outside, giving some extra peace of mind during golf or tennis sessions. What I really love — and what he notices — is the attention to detail. The 3D checkered texture gives the shirt a subtle, sophisticated look that feels premium. The color-matched snap buttons are secure and easy to use, and the fine line detailing along the placket adds a touch of depth. The side panels and slit hem make movement easy, so he doesn’t feel restricted during activities. It’s clear this shirt is designed with both style and performance in mind. Fit-wise, it’s fantastic. It flatters his physique without feeling tight, giving a clean, streamlined look. He’s worn other golf polos before that were either too stiff or too loose, but this one hits the sweet spot perfectly. Another huge plus is the practicality. This shirt is wrinkle-resistant and washes beautifully, requiring no ironing. That makes it perfect for busy days when he wants to look sharp without extra effort. Overall, the Alex Vando Men’s Golf Shirt is a winner. It’s stylish enough for business casual, functional enough for sports, and incredibly comfortable for everyday wear. My husband loves it, and I’ve already noticed him reaching for it again and again. If you’re looking for a high-quality, versatile polo that combines comfort, style, and performance, this is absolutely worth trying.

Lightweight, Stylish, Moisture-Wicking, Breathable & Stretchy
Color: Bluedotwhite, Size: Large, Color: Bluedotwhite, Size: Large
I picked up this Alex Vando polo in bluedotwhite to add to my polo collection, and overall I’m pleased. The fit is true to size, and the material is lightweight, breathable, comfortable, and stretchy which is perfect for casual office wear or everyday use. I like the subtle design details on the pocket and collar, which add contrast and visual interest without being over the top. The shirt feels substantial without being see-through, and the construction is solid with clean stitching and no loose threads or buttons. At the current online price, this shirt is a good value. My only disappointment is that I got a noticeable snag on the right chest after the second wearing; I’m not sure if there’s a way to smooth the threads back out. Despite that, I still recommend it for style, comfort, and performance.

soft breathable shirt
Color: Navycircles, Size: Large, Color: Navycircles, Size: Large
I measure a 33w and 42c. That would indicate that I should be closer to a size medium. But I have received enough summer short sleeve shirts that have a sizing chart that says that I should be a size medium only to find that they would only look good on me if I were built like Adonis. So I ordered a size large. It fits pretty well. I still think it is a little more snug than I would want but that is just my vanity wishing I had a flat gut. It is a bit difficult to read the washing instructions that are printed in silver on the inner collar. The label says it is 87% nylon and 13% spandex. The craftsmanship of the shirt is excellent. The collar has a nice cloth roll covering the seam so there is no chafing on the neck. The inner seams on the sides are double shitched with an interesting taper at the bottom that would only be noticeable if the shirt is not tucked in. The length of the shirt is sufficient that it will not try to pull out on the back and it is stretchy enough that I think if I tuck it in my underwear it will not pull out when riding my bike. I like the pattern. It is like the little dots on a bird feather repeated over and over.
