Emerald Gaiety Euonymus (Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald Gaiety')

Emerald Gaiety Euonymus is a bright evergreen shrub valued for its crisp variegated foliage, dense habit, and dependable year-round structure. Its green leaves are edged in clean white, giving foundation beds, borders, containers, and low hedges a polished look through every season. In colder weather, the white margins may take on pink tones, adding subtle winter interest when many plants are dormant. With full sun to partial shade, well-drained soil, and occasional trimming, Emerald Gaiety Euonymus brings compact color and easy structure to small and medium landscape spaces.

Distinctive Features

Emerald Gaiety Euonymus forms a dense, mounding evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub with small green leaves edged in bright white. The variegation gives the plant a clean, high-contrast look that works well with darker evergreens, flowering shrubs, perennials, and ornamental grasses. In winter, the leaf margins often develop pink-flushed tones, extending the plant's seasonal interest beyond the main growing season. Stems may root where they touch the ground and can climb if given support, so regular shaping helps keep the plant in a tidy shrub form.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Grows best in full sun to partial shade, with brighter light supporting strong variegation and a dense habit.
  • Soil: Adapts to average, well-drained soil and tolerates a range of landscape soils as long as the site does not stay wet.
  • Water: Water regularly during establishment, then provide supplemental water during extended dry periods to keep foliage clean and healthy.
  • USDA Zones: Hardy in USDA Zones 5 to 9, with winter appearance varying by exposure and climate.
  • Mature Size: Typically reaches about 2 to 4 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide with age, depending on pruning, site conditions, and whether stems are allowed to spread.
  • Habit: Forms a dense, mounding evergreen shrub with spreading stems that may root or climb if left untrimmed.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use as a bright variegated foliage focal point in foundation beds, entry plantings, containers, or mixed borders where year-round contrast is needed.
  • Low Hedge: Plant in a row to create a compact evergreen hedge along walkways, patios, drive edges, or garden borders.
  • Foundation Planting: Use near foundations where a low to medium evergreen shrub can add structure without overwhelming the planting.
  • Container Planting: Grow in decorative pots where its white-edged foliage can brighten patios, porches, entryways, and outdoor living spaces.
  • Groundcover: Use as a spreading evergreen groundcover in managed beds where its growth can be monitored and trimmed as needed.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Watering: Water deeply during the first growing season to establish roots, then water during prolonged dry spells as needed.
  • Mulching: Apply a light mulch layer around the root zone to conserve moisture and reduce weed competition while keeping mulch away from the stems.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly as needed to maintain shape, remove stray or climbing stems, and keep the plant compact.
  • Reversion Control: Remove any solid green shoots promptly so the variegated foliage remains the dominant feature.
  • Fertilizing: Fertilize only when needed in spring based on soil conditions, using a moderate approach that avoids excessive soft growth.
  • Deer Protection: Deer may browse this plant in some landscapes, so young plants may need protection where browsing pressure is heavy.

Why Choose Emerald Gaiety Euonymus?

  • Bright Variegation: Displays green leaves with clean white margins for strong year-round foliage contrast.
  • Winter Interest: Develops pink-flushed leaf margins in cold weather for added seasonal color.
  • Versatile Habit: Can be maintained as a compact shrub, low hedge, container plant, or managed spreading groundcover.
  • Evergreen Structure: Provides dependable foliage, density, and shape through much of the year.
  • Easy Shaping: Responds well to light pruning, making it useful in both formal and casual landscape designs.

Emerald Gaiety Euonymus is an excellent choice for gardeners who want compact evergreen structure with bright variegated foliage. Its white-edged leaves, tidy habit, winter color potential, and flexible landscape use make it a polished option for foundations, low hedges, containers, border fronts, and small garden spaces.

a great guide to DC treasures
Format: Flexibound
This is not a guide book in terms of giving you directions and hours of operation, but it would be a wonderful first step in planning a memorable trip to the nation's capitol. Nineteen themed trails are given, seven in and around the Mall, six nearby, two across the Potomac and two farther afield. Themes include animals (Rock Creek Park, National Zoo, the George Washington University hippo (statue), the National Museum of Natural History, Owney the stuffed dog at the National Postal Museum, Oxon Hill Farm, Kingman Island and the Franciscan Monastery and National Cathedral -- and a blurb about presidential pets), statuary, music, food, horticulture, power, sports, ghosts, architecture, literature, transportation etc. As you can tell these aren't walking tours. Instead each theme gets four pages filled with photos, drawings, fun facts and information about festivals, artifacts, history and spectacle. I try to get to WDC once or twice a year, yet I still found plenty of interesting ideas for further exploration. If you are planning a visit (with or without kids),this would be agreat way to help them choose a few things they'd like to see. Information is presented in a friendly way but is not dumbed down. There is an adequate, if incomplete, index. It would be useful to have a calendar of all the events listed too.

Great book of fun facts about nation’s capital!
Format: Flexibound
I take my 3 boys (3, 5, 7) to Washington DC each year. This is a wonderful book full of fun facts for our nation’s capital. If you are looking for a kid version of a travel book that maps you through neighborhoods, etc., this is not it, but what kid would like that kind of book? That’s what grown-ups are for - mapping out the trip. Rather, this is a great supplement to read at bedtime to learn all sorts of facts about the city - from the historical pets of the White House to the error in the inscription on the Abraham Lincoln memorial. Really - these are great facts for adults also! Each page is a separate set of topics on its own, so it’s easy to read just a few pages at a time. Also there are great illustrations to hold the younger audience’s interest as well. This is a great buy and a must-have to get kids ready for their trip, or to read during it, or after (or all three!).

City Trails is not a guided walking tour (like the Freedom Trail here in Boston) of the Metro DC area. No addresses or street names are noted in the blurbs. To actually visit any of these places, you’ll have to consult a real map. For instance, the chapter “Statue City” highlights notable statuary around town. But the Capitol Building statues (in SE DC) are far from the Cathedral ones (in NW DC.) The themed groupings (G-G-G-Ghosts, Animals Around Town, Water World and more) are less maps to any place and more of an interesting overview of our Nation’s amazingly diverse and action-packed city. It’s best read as a primer on experiencing the flavor of the city (I lived and worked there.) It reads more along the lines of the “Weird But True” series made famous by National Geographic for Kids. I don’t see this being of value to tourists in town for a limited time whose sightseeing is going to include major attractions like government buildings (White House, Capitol), museums (Smithsonian), some monuments (Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington) and other popular sites (Ford’s Theater.) This guide is actually best suited for the Metro-area (WDC, MD and VA) resident – child or adult - who wants a deeper dive into their hometown’s off-the-beaten-path sights and stories. A well designed and written book of historical trivia.

Nice way to learn about a trip to D.C.
Format: Flexibound
I got this for my kids to read before we went to Washington D.C. The pages are colorful, illustrated, and have short bursts of interesting details about the various attractions available to tourists who are visiting. My kids were eager to find the places on our itinerary and read about them ahead of time. They learned what to expect and were sure not to miss the important aspects of our tours. This book is recommended for 9 to 12 year olds and I think that is the perfect range. There is just enough information to peak their interest and not so much that they get bored by reading a bunch of text. The Table of Contents wasn't that informative in finding specific places, but the index was. My kids preferred to leaf through the whole book and find what was interesting to them.
