Scarlet Oak, Quercus coccinea
14-20 Inch Tall Potted Tree
Scarlet Oak (*Quercus coccinea*) is a deciduous tree suitable for USDA Zones 4–9. Thriving in full sun, it prefers acidic, well-drained soils but adapts to various soil types. This medium to large tree grows approximately 15–20 feet within five years and matures at 50–70 feet in height with a spread of 40–50 feet. Notable for its brilliant scarlet fall foliage, it adds significant visual interest to landscapes.
With moderate drought tolerance and low maintenance requirements, it serves well as a shade or street tree. Pruning is best conducted in late winter or early spring to remove dead or crossing branches. Its acorns provide food for wildlife, enhancing its ecological value. It’s one of the last deciduous trees to lose its leaves, generally lasting until the first snow of winter. Wood is used for furniture, flooring, and general construction
