A highly popular series, Magic Fountain Mix contains genetic dwarf varieties, commonly called candle larkspur, offering late spring to late summer interest. The floriferous flower spikes in this multicolored mix bloom for weeks in large semidouble florets of pink, blue, lavender, lilac, and white with dark or light "bees." They create spectacular displays that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to the garden and make excellent cut flowers.

Magic Fountain Mix delphinium varieties are herbaceous short-lived perennials (3 to 5 years) of the buttercup family, renowned for their vigor and heat tolerance. They have a compact, mounded habit of divided dark green foliage and a fast growth rate. Since the flower stalks are shorter than most delphiniums, they do not require staking, but the plants should be sheltered from strong winds. These dwarf delphiniums are perfect for small gardens and are shown to best effect when grouped or massed in mixed beds and borders.

Cold hardy to Zone 3, Magic Fountain Mix varieties grow best in climates with cool, moist summers. They prefer full sun and moist, well-drained, fertile, loamy humus soils that are slightly acidic with a 5.5 to 6.5 pH, but they grow well in alkaline soils and may benefit from some afternoon shade in warmer climates. Feed weekly during growth and flowering with low concentrations of a slow release fertilizer. Do not fertilize after flowering. Once the plant is established, deadhead spent flower spikes to the basal foliage after the blooming period to encourage a second bloom in late summer and/or fall. Dear and rabbit resistant.

Direct sow delphinium seed into warm soil in spring when temperatures range between 59 and 64°F. Cover seed with vermiculite, sand or substrate after sowing. Keep soil slightly moist but not wet. Direct sown delphiniums perform better the second year. Seed can also be started indoors about 8 weeks before the last frost date and transplanted when the soil has warmed to 70°F, after all danger of frost has passed. Seedlings should have 2 or more pairs of true leaves before transplanting. Harden off seedlings by placing the seed trays outside in a sheltered area for about a week.

If you plan to start your seeds indoors, be sure to check out our Bio Dome Seed Starter Kit. With the Bio Dome, you can control the temperature, light, and soil mix to ensure your seeds become strong for transplant.

Good, but not great.
Format: Paperback
Kudos to Lepore for delving into an important, little known subject, which she does better than most historians. At times, however, I think she felt the need to put every little piece of information she got into the book. It was way too long. Some good research, but she has done better. Still, worth checking out. I like to think I know American history, but I know nothing about this awful chapter.

DAMN, this is a great book!
Format: Hardcover
All history books should be this detailed, this readable, this humane. Lepore knows how to write about a horrible, nearly forgotten episode in NYC history. Unlike many historians, she steps away from overt politics or raw emotion. She knows that this subject is too serious to be shouted. It is the rare history book that is packed with facts as well as knowledge. I felt like Lepore was taking my hand and leading me through the smelly streets of lower Manhattan in 1741, like I could almost see the faces of...what were they, anyway? The victims of a horrible hoax? The demented planners of a plot to burn the city? Or something in between, where thieves can also be the keepers of ancient rites from a distant homeland, where the world is turned upside down? I could go on and on, but just buy the book!

New York Burning
Format: Paperback
. This is an important book that explores in depth what is usually only found in textbooks as a one-sentence summation: "In 1741 there was a slave uprising in New York City." Scholars will probably be happier starting with the Appendix and bibliography and then reading the book. The text is disorganized and uneven, and although this is non-fiction, the characters could have been more finely drawn. Peter Zenger's trail keeps popping up in unexpected places, often disconnected from the action the author is working on. Some sections are heavy on primary documents and period writings, others are more poetic. Yes, I do understand the parallels with the Salem Witch Trials. The Salem Witch Trials get more press today because of Arthur Miller's "Crucible." Color and religion of the participants aside, both events are stories of group think and mass hysteria, fear and anger. There is plenty of room here for a first-class film or play to be written. Read this book, learn from it. Expect to complain about it. Kim Burdick Stanton, DE

What You Didn't Know
Format: Paperback
Did you know that if you were a Catholic Priest on the streets of New York in 1747 that you'd be arrested and hung! Great book if you're interested in the times during which our founding Fathers were growing up. It'll give you a different concept on how slavery was different in NYC as opposed to in the South, and how many of the streets in NYC got there names from English magistrates. If you like history, especially of NYC, you'll love this book.

Affordable and gets the job done
Format: Paperback
This is a great book. It gets the job done. It's clear and concise about the important concepts. The authors really edit the cases so that only the important and relevant stuff without the other fluff. I think that this book is better than other expensive textbooks. I don't think anyone didn't love this book. 100% would encourage professors to assign this book.
