Spider Flower (Cleome hassleriana)

Spider Flower adds airy height and a fireworks-like bloom show that keeps borders feeling light, not bulky, from early summer until frost. The flowers hover on tall stems with long, threadlike stamens, giving the plant a unique texture that looks great behind fuller perennials and annuals. It also attracts plenty of garden activity, including bees and butterflies, which makes the whole bed feel more alive. If you want fast, warm-season color with a see-through habit that still reads from a distance, this plant is a strong choice.

Distinctive Features

This fast-growing annual forms an upright, lightly branching plant with palmate green leaves and showy flower clusters in white, pink, rose, or purple tones. Bloom typically runs from early summer through frost, with flowers opening along an ever-lengthening terminal cluster as the season progresses. Slender seed pods form below the blooms and can lead to self-seeding if left in place, and some forms may have small spines along the stems. Mature size is commonly about 3 to 6 feet tall and 1 to 2 feet wide, depending on variety and growing conditions.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to part shade, with the best flowering and strongest habit in full sun.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil, and it performs best in amended garden soil that is not waterlogged.
  • Water: Medium, water to establish, then provide steady moisture for best growth while tolerating some dryness once established.
  • Zones: USDA Zones 10 to 11 as a short-lived perennial, grown as an annual elsewhere.
  • Notable Traits: Attracts pollinators and hummingbirds, may self-seed, and older types may have spiny stems.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use a bold drift as a focal point so the tall stems and spider-like blooms create a dramatic summer veil of color.
  • Back of Border: Plant behind shorter flowers to add height and an airy backdrop without blocking the view.
  • Seasonal Screening: Use in a row for quick warm-season privacy and soft visual separation.
  • Cottage Gardens: Mix with other upright bloomers for a relaxed, classic garden look with constant movement.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Support: Provide light staking in windy sites, since tall stems can lean as plants mature.
  • Watering: Water during extended drought to keep plants blooming and prevent stress-related leaf drop.
  • Seed Control: Remove seed pods if you want to limit self-seeding and keep the planting tidier.
  • Feeding: Avoid overfertilizing, since excessive fertility can lead to leggy growth and fewer flowers.

Why Choose Spider Flower?

  • Long Bloom Season: Flowers from early summer until frost for a steady warm-season display.
  • Airy Height: Typically reaches about 3 to 6 feet tall for vertical impact without heaviness.
  • Pollinator Friendly: Draws bees, butterflies, and often hummingbirds for a more active garden.
  • Fast Results: Grows quickly and fills space well, making it useful for seasonal color and screening.

Spider Flower looks best when planted in groups, letting the blooms read as a floating layer rather than isolated stems. Pair it with mounding flowers and ornamental grasses to balance the height and keep the planting feeling full at ground level. Give it sun and good drainage, then water as needed to keep growth steady through heat. If you want tall, airy summer color with a unique texture, this plant delivers.

...awkward book to rate...
Format: Kindle
This is an awkward book to rate as: the facts all seem to be there, hut the presentation is a touch below par for a 'Captivating History' book. There is a light garnish of literary and grammatical errors, a dose of waffle here and there, the chronology can jump back and forth and - I may have been distracted, but: I do not recall reading about what ultimately happened to Haile Selassie Most of the final, extended, chapter just repeats what has previously been covered. STILL - it's a most interesting period in history.

A not often studied part of African history
Format: Kindle
This book presents the history of Ethiopia up to the Italian invasion as a backdrop giving the culture and the nature of the Ethiopian Empire. Ethiopia has a history of more than 3,000 years and converted to Christianity about the same time that the Roman Empire did. During the medieval period remained strong in Christianity and traded with the East as well as with medieval Europe. It was one of the most advanced countries in the world at that time. When Italy started trying to build up an empire and catch up because of its lag behind the rest of Europe in Empire building, Ethiopia was one of the last parts of Africa that was not yet a colony of a European power. Italy and made a failed attempt at conquering Ethiopia but when Mussolini took power in Italy he decided to rebuild the grandeur of Roman Empire. This book takes you through the war with Italy and tells it from the Ethiopian side as well as presenting some of the concepts of the Italian side as well. Hey you will also become acquainted with the major players on both sides of the Italian Ethiopian war. It is well researched and it describes the war, the struggle that both the Ethiopians and the Italians had during the war and the final conclusion and how the war ended. The book has been well researched and is very interesting. I found this to be an excellent book to explain the war in North Africa as well as the struggle for independence of the Ethiopians. This is a book that I would like to have had when I was teaching world history. I highly recommend this book and feel that it is a great addition to anyone's library.
