Blue Storm Lily of the Nile (Agapanthus praecox subsp. orientalis 'ATIBlu')

Blue Storm Lily of the Nile delivers clean, sky-blue flower clusters that rise above a dense clump of strap-like foliage for a polished summer look. The plant stays compact at the base, so it fits easily along edges, in mixed borders, and in containers without taking over. It thrives in heat and handles dry periods once established, making it a dependable choice for sunny, low-fuss plantings. When it is in bloom, the upright stems add instant structure and a calm, coastal color tone.

Distinctive Features

This evergreen, clump-forming perennial produces rounded umbels of sky-blue, trumpet-shaped flowers on short, sturdy stems from mid spring into summer, with bloom timing shifting later in cooler climates. The foliage is narrow, green, and arching, creating a tidy mound that looks good even when the plant is not flowering. Its compact footprint makes it especially useful where traditional agapanthus can feel too large or floppy. Mature size is typically about 12 inches tall and about 20 inches wide, with flower stems rising to about 30 inches tall.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun: Full sun to partial sun for best flowering and strong stems.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil, from average to moderately fertile, and avoid persistently wet sites.
  • Water: Moderate water to establish, then low to moderate water, watering during extended drought for best bloom.
  • Zones: USDA Zones 8 to 11.
  • Notable Traits: Evergreen foliage in mild climates, heat tolerant, and adaptable once established.

Ideal Uses

  • Focal Point: Use a clustered planting as a focal point in a sunny bed where the sky-blue blooms can rise above a clean green base.
  • Containers: Plant in pots to bring the flowers closer to patios and entryways while keeping growth contained.
  • Border Edging: Line paths and bed fronts for a neat, grassy silhouette that blooms above the foliage.
  • Mass Planting: Repeat in drifts to create a consistent summer color layer with a refined, modern feel.

Low Maintenance Care

  • Deadheading: Remove spent flower heads to keep the plant tidy and encourage a longer bloom display.
  • Watering: Water deeply during prolonged heat and drought, especially in containers.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly in spring if needed, since excessive fertility can push foliage at the expense of flowers.
  • Division: Divide clumps every few years if flowering declines or the center becomes crowded.

Why Choose Blue Storm Lily of the Nile?

  • Sky-Blue Bloom: Rounded clusters of clear blue flowers bring a calm, refined look to summer plantings.
  • Compact Footprint: Dense foliage stays around 12 inches tall and about 20 inches wide, with blooms reaching about 30 inches tall.
  • Heat Tolerance: Handles sun and warmth well and becomes more drought tolerant once established.
  • Versatile Placement: Works equally well for edging, mixed borders, and containers with a clean, upright finish.

Blue Storm Lily of the Nile looks best when planted in repeats, letting the foliage create a consistent base while the blue blooms rise in a rhythmic pattern. Pair it with silvery foliage, ornamental grasses, and warm-toned flowers for contrast that feels intentional and balanced. Provide sun, drainage, and a sensible watering routine in the first season, and it will settle into a steady performer. If you want compact structure with clear summer color, this plant fits beautifully.

Excellent
Format: Paperback
As a second-year cardiology fellow, I used to get very confused with hemodynamics during my cath and CCU rotations. This book is a gem, it is clear and logically written, has great explanations of waves and great illustrations. The constrictive pericarditis, valvular disease, and FFR chapters are impressive with echocardiographic and physiologic correlations. I actually liked everything I read, like the nice differentiation between the pressure tracings of various chambers. Some of it requires multiple reads but it is worth it. I realized that I had missed a great deal of the basic understanding of pressure tracing configuration, wedge pressure, shunts. There are also over 50 cases in a test-answer format probably covering and reviewing most hemodynamic topics. It is like 2 books in 1.

A welcome addition to training in hemodynamics
Format: Paperback
Purchased this book for my husband, the director of the Invasive Cardiovascular Technologist Program at a small college. He has been very pleased with the book, calling it a long-overdue addition to the field. It's very helpful in training technologists and others working in Cardiac Cath Labs to recognize hemodynamic waveforms and do calculations. It offers a lot of practice questions in addition to explanations.

Clear Concise
Format: Paperback
I like the way that this book is laid out. Rather than long drawn out droning chapters it is split into shorter more specific sections. The graphics are plenty big. The case examples and guided questions are useful in reinforcing the knowledge. A good resource for any new CVT or CVT student.
