Alfalfa meal is made from the leguminous perennial alfalfa plant, commonly grown as a pasture and cover crop. Known for its pleasant aroma, its main advantage is boosting organic matter in the soil, though it also serves as an effective plant-based fertilizer. To see it in action, check out our Alfalfa Meal Product Video.

  • Excellent addition to the compost pile for nitrogen content and absorbency.
  • Roses respond especially well to alfalfa meal. For new plantings of roses, mix 0.5 cup per plant into the soil.
  • For existing plants, mix 0.5-1 cup of alfalfa meal to a depth of 4"-6" around each rose bush.
  • For vegetables and flower beds, work in at 2-5 lbs/100 sq ft.
  • 2.5% N, 0.5% P, 2.5%K

It is derived from the leguminous perennial plant known as alfalfa (Medicago sativa), is a popular and versatile soil amendment used by gardeners to boost soil fertility and nurture healthy, robust plants. This organic product has been valued in agriculture for centuries and continues to be a go-to choice for both home gardeners and commercial growers. In this guide, we will explore the benefits, uses, and application methods of alfalfa meal.

The Benefits of Alfalfa Meal:

  1. Nutrient-Rich: It is a natural source of essential plant nutrients, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (N-P-K). It also contains various trace minerals, making it a well-rounded fertilizer.

  2. Improves Soil Structure: When incorporated into the soil, alfalfa meal helps improve soil structure by enhancing its aeration and water-holding capacity. This results in better root development and nutrient absorption by plants.

  3. Rich in Organic Matter: It is an excellent source of organic matter, which enriches the soil and encourages the growth of beneficial soil microorganisms. This promotes a healthier and more vibrant soil ecosystem.

  4. Promotes Microbial Activity: The organic content acts as a food source for beneficial soil bacteria and fungi. This boosts microbial activity, leading to improved nutrient cycling and overall soil health.

  5. Balanced Nutrition: It provides a balanced nutrient profile, making it suitable for a wide range of plants, including vegetables, flowers, and fruit trees.

Common Uses for Alfalfa Meal:

  1. As a Fertilizer: It serves as a natural and slow-release fertilizer. Its nutrient content, especially nitrogen, promotes healthy leafy growth in plants. It can be applied to the soil before planting or as a top dressing during the growing season.

  2. In Composting: Adding it to your compost pile can accelerate decomposition, thanks to its nitrogen content. It also helps balance the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio in the compost, leading to the production of nutrient-rich compost.

  3. Mulching: Spreading it around the base of plants provides both weed suppression and a slow-release source of nutrients. It gradually breaks down, feeding your plants throughout the growing season.

  4. For Nitrogen Fixation: Leguminous cover crops, such as alfalfa, have the unique ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen into a form that plants can use. Growing alfalfa as a cover crop can enrich the soil with nitrogen, benefiting subsequent crops.

  5. In Organic Gardening: It is a favored choice among organic gardeners due to its natural composition and minimal environmental impact. It aligns with organic gardening principles and helps maintain soil health.

Application Tips:

  • Pre-Planting: When preparing your garden beds, incorporate it into the soil at a rate of 5-10 pounds per 100 square feet. Mix it thoroughly to ensure even distribution.

  • Top Dressing: For established plants, apply it as a top dressing around the base of the plant. Use 1-2 cups for small plants and up to 5 cups for larger ones.

  • Composting: When adding it to your compost pile, use 1-2 cups for every 25 square feet of compost.

  • Cover Cropping: When using it as a cover crop, sow seeds at the recommended rate for your specific region and follow cover cropping guidelines.

  • Mulching: Apply a thin layer of it as mulch around the base of plants, keeping it away from direct contact with stems or trunks.

It is a valuable organic soil amendment that offers multiple benefits to gardeners. Whether you're looking to boost plant nutrition, improve soil structure, or enhance your compost, it is a versatile and eco-friendly choice that promotes healthy and thriving gardens. By incorporating this natural resource into your gardening practices, you'll be on your way to growing lush, vibrant plants and fostering a sustainable garden environment.

Cool Texture, Great Product, Notable Cons, Still Recommend
Model: Tab S11/S10 Lite/S10 FE/S9/S9 FE/S8/S7
AMAZING PRODUCT! I've never used a "paper-like" screen protector, but this one applied perfectly and was easy to use! (just follow the instructions!) no bubbles, just one single speck of dust (my own fault - sigh). It creates a very strong "matte" effect and feels cool to run your hand over (very paper-y) CONS: -The fit was SLIGHTLY big for my new S11 tablet, (each corner went RIGHT to the very corner of the tablet ALMOST going over the lip-this was just the corners of the protector and not the edges, which I found weird. IMO, its too close for my own comfort, but it still works none the less, and I've managed to use a case with it too with only minor corner lift). -The texture of the screen protector definitely distorts the pixels slightly, its just something to get used to, and probably something you'd have to see yourself, for if it would bug you or not. -It collects fingerprints like craaazy but they also wipe off craaazy easy too....sooo not fully an issue? just surprised me. Overall, for the money, I still recommend getting this protector if you're at all interested in a "paper-like" finish!

Great quality and easy to apply
Model: iPad A16 11th/10th/Air 11
I love these screen protectors. They feel amazing and they sent an installation kit making the applying process so easy. There was also a squeegee included to make sure air bubbles wouldn’t Be a problem. I’ve had zero problems with the protector reducing the touch sensitivity of the screen, the protectors fit well, seem durable, and are great quality. The price was also reasonable. I’ve never owned other paper-feel screen protectors so I’m not able to give a comparison, but for these being my first ones I am very pleased.

Good but Installation was a Bit Iffy
Model: iPad A16 11th/10th/Air 11
90% of the time I use my iPad for school. Originally, I used just a regular screen protector, but it would get dirty with smudges and imprints from my Apple Pencil, and there would be a lot of glare since I'm in a classroom most of the time, which would make it awkward to see what I was writing at times. Plus, the screen protector was too smooth so it would actually be difficult to write legibly. This product makes it a lot easier to write smoother on the iPad. I only just installed it, so I can't say much on the smear protection yet, but I can already see the reduction in glare as well. For $8, getting a pack of two of these with an install kit is a very nice deal imo. My only issue was the installation process, which could've been as much my own fault tbh, but I felt like I aligned the screen protector pretty well with the sticker, however the first time I tried installing it it was way off the center (maybe my case got in the way?). The biggest issue was using the squeegee to pop air bubbles, and this is something they don't mention in neither their instruction guide nor video, but you're supposed to used the velvet red side, not the naked white side: using the white side actually takes the grit off the protector, which is obviously something you don't want on a product that relies on it. Thankfully I have another one in reserve in case this one wears off sooner than expected.

Perfect Paperlike substitute
Model: iPad Air/Pro 13
I’ve been using this screen for roughly two months now and I can say it was so worth it, it is rough on plastic nibs! I am going to order some heavier duty ones and see how it fairs! It works just fine ON TOP of a screen protector isn’t that great! I wanted something like paper like but didn’t want to pay that expensive price for something I wasn’t sure I was going to like. This one does the trick and gives me just enough resistance to feel more in control of my pen! It fits well just make sure to know the size if your screen I had to modify where the camera indent was but it cut just fine and looks great!
