Philodendron gloriosum is one of the most iconic and coveted tropical aroids, celebrated for its enormous, heart-shaped, velvety green leaves and striking white veins. A member of the Araceae family and native to the humid rainforests of Colombia, this terrestrial (ground-creeping) species stands out for its bold, luxurious foliage and elegant growth habit.

Unlike most Philodendrons, which climb, Philodendron gloriosum grows horizontally, creeping along the soil surface and producing large leaves on short petioles. Each leaf is a deep, emerald green with a soft, velvety texture and prominent creamy-white or silvery veins that create a stunning contrast. Mature specimens can produce leaves over 60 cm wide under ideal conditions, forming an extraordinary display of tropical beauty.

Graceful, sculptural, and deeply dramatic, Philodendron gloriosum is the crown jewel of any indoor plant collection — a statement of refinement and botanical luxury.

Philodendron gloriosum – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate medium light, but lower light will result in slower growth and smaller leaves. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate velvet surface. Filtered light through sheer curtains or an east-facing window is ideal.

Watering

Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry to the touch. Overwatering can lead to root rot, especially given its creeping rhizome. In winter, reduce watering slightly to match slower growth. Always ensure excellent drainage.

Temperature and Humidity

Temperature: Prefers warmth between 18–28 °C; avoid temperatures below 15 °C. Protect from cold drafts and sudden fluctuations.
Humidity: High humidity (60–80%) helps maintain large, healthy leaves and prevents crispy edges. Mist regularly, use a humidifier, or place near other tropical plants to boost ambient moisture.

Soil and Potting

Use a well-draining, airy aroid mix — compost combined with perlite, orchid bark, coco coir, and sphagnum moss provides the perfect structure. Philodendron gloriosum prefers a wide, shallow pot to accommodate its creeping rhizome. Repot every 1–2 years in spring, gently repositioning the rhizome so new growth can continue forward.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser or one formulated for foliage plants. Avoid over-fertilising, which can damage roots or cause leaf edge burn. Suspend feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.

Pruning and Maintenance

Trim off any older or yellowing leaves near the base to maintain a tidy appearance and redirect energy to new growth. Wipe leaves gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and highlight their velvety sheen. Rotate occasionally to ensure even light exposure.

Growth and Maturity

A slow to moderate grower, Philodendron gloriosum can spread up to 1 metre across under ideal conditions. Each new leaf emerges larger than the last, gradually developing deeper colour and more defined venation. Its horizontal growth habit and enormous leaves make it best suited to display on low plant stands or wide surfaces.

Common Issues

  • Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Brown edges: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.

  • Small leaves: Insufficient light or nutrients.

  • Pests: Occasionally affected by thrips, mealybugs, or spider mites — treat promptly with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Background and Benefits

Native to the tropical rainforests of Colombia, Philodendron gloriosum grows along the forest floor, where filtered light, high humidity, and rich soil provide perfect growing conditions. Its creeping rhizome allows it to spread horizontally, absorbing moisture and nutrients as it moves across the jungle floor.

In cultivation, it has become one of the most admired species for its velvety texture, bold venation, and commanding leaf size. Symbolically, Philodendron gloriosum represents strength, patience, and quiet power — fitting for a plant that exudes elegance without climbing.

Quick Care Summary

  • Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sun

  • Water: Keep soil evenly moist; allow top few cm to dry

  • Temperature: 18–28 °C; avoid below 15 °C

  • Humidity: High (60–80%)

  • Soil: Airy, well-draining aroid mix – compost, perlite, bark, coco coir, moss

  • Feed: Every 4–6 weeks in spring/summer

  • Growth: 1 m wide; horizontal creeping plant with large, velvety green leaves and white veins

⚠️ Toxicity note: Toxic to pets and humans if ingested; may cause mild mouth and skin irritation.

Styling Tip

Display Philodendron gloriosum in a wide, shallow pot or decorative trough to accommodate its creeping growth habit. Its velvety, heart-shaped leaves make it perfect as a low centrepiece or floor plant in bright, humid spaces such as living rooms or conservatories. Pair with upright plants like Philodendron ‘Imperial Green’ or Anthurium clarinervium for contrast and height variation. For an elevated tropical aesthetic, place it against darker walls or in matte ceramic planters to accentuate its dramatic, glowing veins.

It's a beast and you can add attachments to, like a brush cutter head.
Style: 16" (2 x 4Ah)
This thing is a beast of a battery powered machine. I wouldn't put it completely up against my gas. It is much better than the Greenworks 24V 13-Inch Brushless String Trimmer (Gen 2), 4.0Ah USB Battery and Charger Included that I had purchased this time last year. I have several gas so I only really needed a light duty one to do the fence line and around the house. The main issue with the 13 inch was that the auto feed bump mechanism was worthless. It also uses very thin lines so very quickly you go from 13 inches to 6 to 8. and the bump feed does not work even with greenworks replacement spools. You get twice the batteries and a dual rapid charger for $50 more. You couldn't even buy the battery for that much. onto this thing. Love the dual string heavy-duty string mechanism. Love the fact that you can remove the trimmer head and add an attachment. I have attachments from my gas Trimmers and they work perfectly. My brush head attachment utterly devastated thick bramble from an overgrown lot. The best part is it took me two hours to get my stored gas trimmers to run properly which I don't have to do with a battery operated device. No gas flying that deteriorated or primer bubbles that have burst followed spark plugs Stale gas . Just throw the batteries on and you're off. Nothing long-term to report, only had it a week. Used it enough to run down completely six sets of batteries.

Works well, but battery life is lacking
Style: 15" (2 x 2Ah)
This is a decent trimmer and gets the job done almost as well as a gas model. It has decent power (could use a little more) and is plenty light. However, the battery life stinks. One of the two batteries has already decided not to charge. It plugs in, but the charger does not blink or charge it. The terminals are clean. Of course, this happened just outside the return/support window, meaning I now have to buy a new battery just to use the trimmer. That's about half the price of the trimmer; if the other one dies, too, I may as well buy a brand new gas trimmer for the price and have the thing last for a decade or two like my last one, instead of a couple years like this one.

Overall very good product.
Style: 15" (2 x 2Ah)
I bought this trimmer as I had previously bought a Greenworks 24V MAX Cordless drill that uses the same battery. The batteries to buy them alone are over 50 dollars each and as this has two its a great value in that respect. I was tired of electric trimmers with cords or noisy gas powered ones that are hard to start. This so far has worked excellent. I have not had a problem with the trimmer cord breaking and having to re-wind it back onto the spool like some other trimmers I have used. It is not noisy and it is effective and easy to use. The only thing I would disagree on is it is advertised as having an Ultra lightweight design. It is not heavy or cumbersome to use but I would not call it ultra lightweight. Overall very good product.

Extremely diappointing
Style: 15" (2 x 2Ah)
I purchased a Greenworks Impact Wrench for my son. I was so so impressed with it that I purchased one for myself & decided to try their 2x24V 15" Cordless String Trimmer. Unfortunately just because a company makes one excellent tool doesn't mean that all their tools are good. The first problem I had with the trimmer was that it didn't come with the batteries or charger in the ad. It was supposed to have 4.0Ah batteries but came with 2.0Ah. In addition, more often than not, the manual didn't agree with actual parts & features. The trimmer requires two 24V batteries to operate. It can't be used with one battery even though it has a "low power" setting. On full power the trimmer had adequate power for most weeds but is no where near as powerful as a gas trimmer. The batteries only lasted about 20 minutes (this trimmer does not have a brushless motor). The 2 line feed head is not designed for easy reloading. In fact, it is the worst design I've ever owned. I've decided to return it & try one of their 2x24V brushless motor trimmers which should provide more power & has 4.0Ah batteries but costs significantly more.

CUSTOMER SERVICE IS TRASH - edited
Style: 15" (2 x 2Ah)
I bought this product and it arrived with one battery that doesn't charge out of the two. Without 2 batteries, it won't work at all. Attempted to contact Greenworks with the number Amazon provided. They were closed on the weekends. Called Monday and the message stated that customer support closed early. Attempted using the Chat option for help. It states the model number STE304, doesn't exist, so I couldn't proceed. Called on Tuesday. I have been on hold for over an hour and still nothing. Will update. After about an hour and a half on hold (yes, the offer the option of leaving a call back number, which I didn't use as I had to work from home to access customer service when they were open. Also, they needed me to try out stuff with the batteries and give them serial numbers, etc.) The lady I spoke to spoke English and appeared to be US based. Eventually, after doing the "did you restart it" version of troubleshooting, it was indeed determined my battery didn't work and they offered to ship me a new one at no cost. I then had to dispose of my non-working battery in the proper manner, and our yearly toxic garbage pick up coincided with this, thankfully. It took time out of my work schedule to get this resolved, but the lady I spoke to was great and I did get my battery about a week or so later, which I did appreciate. Customer service needs better access esp since you have to have the physical batteries and charger to get this resolved, which you may not be able to do while working. Maybe they can't find people to work as that seems to be an issue everywhere. The weed eater works fine. Updated from one star to three based on resolving issues and a dead battery upon arrival, rather than the actual equipment working.
