My first remembrance of tuberoses (Polianthes tuberosa) was when I visited a friend in Houston. They had them growing in pots as well as in the ground by their pool. I couldn't believe the sweet fragrance that filled the summer air. Ever since that wonderful visit, I have tried to recreate this fragrance in my own gardens. The single tuberose is one of the toughest, most reliable bloomers for this group of plants - they are actually members in the same family as Agave. They will grow during the summer and bloom mid-summer. Most of ours started blooming in mid-July and continued to send up stalks of blooms until the first of December.

Planting: Planting a tuber is one of the most enjoyable things. You can't do it wrong! You can plant the tuber with the tip down, or if you aren't sure, you can plant the tuber on its side. It doesn't matter which side. The tuber will "fix" itself. Plant it with no more than 2-3 inches of soil above it.

Landscape and Maintenance: The tuberose will perform best in full sun! Yes, you read that correctly, full sun. In 2022, we had 5 weeks of "heat advisory" temperatures, and they did great. They will do ok if they get a bit of late afternoon shade, but not too much. Cold freezes will hurt them, and they like to be dry during the winter, so plant them accordingly or in pots and bring them in during the winter. You will need to mulch over them if the winter is in the 20s and below. The foliage is about about 1' tall and makes a great boarder. About mid-July, suddenly you have a stalk about 2-3 tall with a row of blooms several inches long.

Pots: These work great in pots to place around the pool or patio. Tuberose multiply quickly so you may want to plant fewer than you think in each pot. Look at the picture below to see how big the foliage gets. I hope you enjoy these in your garden as I have in mine!

Water: The tuberose will perform best if you give it a good drink, about an inch, once or twice a week rather than light little waterings. You don't want to have the plant in standing water. It is also best to water early in the day if you use sprinklers so that the foliage has time to dry before evening. That simply means that you will have beautiful blooms longer during the season. Make no mistake this is a hardy plant that will endure the heat and drought. It will still grow and multiply so if you need to go on vacation you don't have to worry about it.

Scent: I want to be sure to stress how significant it is to plant the tuberose somewhere that you can enjoy the scent. The tuberose has a unique scent and is used in many perfumes. Some describe it as soft and sweet while others call it light and spicy. It will fill the air if you are able to plant a few around your yard, along walkways, next to your patio, or even the mailbox. You can certainly plant it in pots and move it around or even bring it in the house when you want a centerpiece.

Cut Blooms: If you want to enjoy the fragrance indoors, the best time to cut the top of the shoot that holds more than a dozen blooms is when at least two of them are already open. The others will open slowly over the next few days. Cutting some of the blooms to enjoy indoors will encourage additional flower growth.

We are now shipping the tuberose as tubers. If planted by late spring, you should see growth from the tubers the same summer, but you may not see blooms until the next July. Sometimes Tuberose tubers require a year of growth in the ground before you see anything.

We have been growing these at the farm. You can see from the picture that each one is muliplying. The foliage dies back quickly when we take them from the ground, but plant them soon and they will get adjusted quickly.

Interesting facts: The tuberose have been written about for hundreds of years. The Spaniards encountered them in the early 1500s when they entered the Aztec capital of modern day Mexico City. A couple million pounds of tuberose are used each year in France for the perfume industry. The tuberose are used in India and other locations as special wedding flowers.

Thrilling and illustrated beautifully
Format: Paperback
Do not miss this series if your a Star Wars fan, if your a Vader fan in particular this is a must read comic as it really goes into Vaders early days and his journey to become a true champion of the dark side. Had to put it down on purpose several times so it would not end. Loving my second read of the same volume as well. This book pulls no punches and the writing is much better than I thought it would be. This is one of the few new Marvel comics that can stand tall with the classics and Dark Horses comics. Illustrations are top notch and the story is well thought out.

An origins story of sorts
Format: Paperback
Darth Vader is an angry man. Recently Anakin Skywalker, hero of the Republic, the Chosen One in the eyes of some of the Jedi, he is now a literally broken man, as much machine as human, as result of losing a battle with his former master—and ‘brother’—and left to die along the lava rivers of Mustafar. Worse, he is bereft of his great love, Padme Amidala, and is at least the proximate, if not the direct, cause of her death. So yeah, he has a few things to work out. This first volume of the second DV run from Marvel focuses on how Vader becomes Vader, the Dark Lord of the Sith that strikes fear in the hearts of friend and foe alike. The plot here across the six collected issues is fairly minimal. Having lost his lightsaber to Obi-Wan in the Mustafar fight, he needs a new one, and it needs to a Sith saber, which can only be gotten by taking a saber from a foe and “bleeding” it, by infusing its crystal with all the hate and anger that drives the Sith. In the process, this will turn the crystal’s light red (thus explaining why Sith sabers are the color they are). So, the first three issues are about him acquiring and crafting said saber. The other issues are his rocky introduction to and training of the Inquisitorious, the Emperor’s new Jedi hunters. So, with six issues of not a whole lot of story, does this collection work? To my surprise, yes it does. This is all about emotion, and if there is a standout star, it’s Vader’s rage. His former life gone, crushed and burned in the fires of Mustafar, Vader’s going to forge a new one in the very flames of his anger. Writer Charles Soule has done a fine job in depicting this inner turmoil and translating it into the foundations of the Dark Lord’s new life. Also nicer is artist Giuseppe Camuncoli’s work. The artwork is dynamic—Vader is agile, fluid and skillful —and interesting. It’s good stuff and does a fine job giving us insight to Vader’s state of mind. As I’ve said, there’s not a whole lot of story here, but there is a fine character study of damaged man rebuilding himself into a powerful and formidable individual.
