CULTURE

Soil temperature: Min 70 degrees
Germination lighting: Light
Depth: 1/8"
Germination days: 10 days
Plant spread: 24"
Plant height: 48''
Plant type: Annual
Maturation days: 100 days

These seeds require light to germinate and they are best started in pots, but you can sow them directly in your garden in late spring once temperatures stay in the mid 70's.

The seeds are very tiny so it's best to mix them with sand and use a small shaker to distribute. For pots or trays start with pre-moistened potting mix and distribute the seed and sand mix on the top of your pot. These need light and warmth to germinate so expose to a light source and keep in the 70's during the germination process. They dislike being disturbed while germinating so water from below and once seedlings are around 3" tall slowly introduce them into your garden in spring after your last frost.

You can also direct seed in spring by mixing your seed packet with sand and using the shaker method in your garden bed. These grow rapidly and after around 100 days with start to create small yellow flowers and then seed pods.

Uses:

  • Antimalarial Effects: Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) are recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for treating uncomplicated malaria. Note: The use of the whole herb alone is not recommended for treating malaria, as it may not be effective enough to kill all parasites and could lead to drug resistance.
  • Anti-inflammatory and Pain Relief: Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, extracts have shown potential in reducing pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activity: Sweet Annie contains numerous antioxidants, such as flavonoids and phenolic compounds, which help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Lab studies have also indicated that its essential oil and extracts have antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties.
  • Digestive Health: Traditionally, it has been used as a bitter tonic to enhance digestion, relieve stomach upset, and expel parasites.
  • Potential Anticancer Activity: Preliminary lab and animal studies have indicated that artemisinin and its derivatives may have cancer-fighting effects against various cancer cells, including ovarian, lung, and colorectal cancer cells. However, more research and human clinical trials are needed to confirm these effects and determine safe and effective dosages.
  • Other Conditions: The herb has been traditionally used for conditions like fever, headaches, jaundice, and various infections. Some research also suggests potential benefits for liver support and immune system modulation.

How to Use:

  • Tea: Steep 2-5 teaspoons of dried leaves in hot water; drink 1-3 times daily for fevers or digestive issues.
  • Tincture: Fill a jar with fresh leaves/flowers (harvested in late summer/fall), cover with 100-proof vodka, let steep for 4-6 weeks in a dark place, strain, and label.
  • Dosage: Tincture doses vary (e.g., 10-30 drops, 1-3x daily), but always follow a herbalist's guidance.
  • Key Uses: Traditionally for malaria (rich in artemisinin), intestinal parasites, and "true heat" conditions.

Burns
Maybe once you get your eczema under control with some other product, you can use this for maintenance, but it's an absolute misery if you have a bad outbreak of eczema. I have no idea why this thing has alcohol in it but it burns like a star when you put it on severely irritated skin. Note: I originally gave this 3 stars, but Eczema Honey reached out to me to offer a refund. I didn't take it, but I appreciated that they *would* do that. Plus, my acute outbreak has subsided and it's perfectly fine to use now, so just be warned it hurts to apply if you have an active eczema flareup!

Absolutely worth the money!!
I'm 38 and I've never had eczema but I did always have sensitive skin. About a week ago I noticed a dry patch under my eyelid and boy did it flare up very quickly. I tried several plant based products for eczema but it just burned. I decided this product would be my final purchase before going to urgent care. I received this product 2 days ago. After reading the reviews I decided to slowly add this to my skin. Now it did burn on the part that was super worse than the other so I made sure to put very thin amounts till my skin could handle a thick application. Id say I put the cream on about 6times the first day by the next day I could already see the difference the swelling and redness went away. The second day I did the same no more slight burning my skin is still dry but it is healing. I would definitely give it a try if you're experiencing eczema for your first time!

Itch-Free Face :)
This cream made a difference day one! It soothed the skin around my eyes and eyelids plus on my face. I forgot to wash my face one night and my skin was still outbreak free and felt so smooth. I haven't had itchy skin since I started using this cream. I would definitely recommend to a friend.

Ouch! I paid WHAT for this?
This "eczema cream" contains alcohol. It says you can use it on your face and body. I applied the cream to my face and it burned my eyes. I then read that the ingredients contain alcohol. It did NOT help with my eczema at all. Everyone's skin is different, but I personally was very disappointed especially at $20 for 2oz. that the product ingredients were not soothing, burned my eyes, and dried out my skin more than it already was.
