Lycoris commonly known as the Red Spider Lily, is a captivating perennial bulb renowned for its striking, bright red flowers and unique blooming pattern. Native to East Asia, this plant adds a touch of exotic beauty to gardens, especially in late summer and early autumn when it bursts into bloom. The Red Spider Lily is often referred to as a "surprise lily" because its flowers emerge suddenly and dramatically, often after heavy rainfall, on leafless stems, creating a stunning visual effect. In Japan, Lycoris radiata is associated with the autumn equinox and is often planted near temples and cemeteries.
Incorporating Lycoris radiata into your garden introduces a touch of exotic elegance and ensures a spectacular display when many other plants have finished blooming.
Flowers: The Red Spider Lily produces eye-catching umbels of 4-6 brilliant coral-red flowers with a golden sheen. The blossoms are adorned with elegantly curled petals and exceptionally long stamens, giving them a spider-like appearance. These flowers typically bloom in late summer to early fall, often emerging on naked stems before the foliage appears.
Foliage: After the flowering period, strap-shaped, dark green leaves with a hint of blue emerge. This foliage persists throughout the winter, fading away in late spring.
Growth Habit: Lycoris radiata grows to a height of approximately 18-24 inches and spreads about 12-18 inches, forming a clump over time.
