The species name squamicaule derives from the Latin for "scaly stem," a direct reference to the densely bristled, scale-like trichomes that cover the petioles in a way that gives them a furry, almost caterpillar-like texture unlike anything else in the genus. In the pink form specifically, those petioles are a vivid salmon to hot pink, a color so saturated against the large, elongated, dark glossy green arrow-shaped leaves that the petiole becomes the entire visual statement of the plant — the leaves themselves clean, deeply green, and handsomely architectural, but the eye drawn immediately and repeatedly to the extraordinary pink furry stems.
