This is the best flowering plant for dry and hot areas (Gujarat, Rajasthan, Tamilnadu etc.) Its round and red inflorescence of flowers attracts everyone. Its flowers stay on plant for approximately 07 days. This feature makes it more attractive. This plant germinates from bulb shaped root. This plant blooms during summer and rainy season. The plant should not be grown in a very small pot. It must have at least 4 inch soil under it for proper growth of roots. If we grow this in bigger pot, plant will show better growth. The plant will bloom after it has reached full growth. Its leaves can be as long as 1 feet. This plant can bloom flowers in balcony also with diffused sunlight. We can easily preserve the bulbs after blooming season gets over. If you do not wish to preserve the bulbs, you can leave the bulb in soil itself. The bulb can stay with leaves as a rooted plant in soil. The plant will be available with its leaves.
Watering & Sunlight: This plant prefers to grow well in direct sunlight. However, it can bloom in diffused sunlight as well. We should water, only when the soil becomes dry. Its bulb and roots store water. Hence, it does not like over watering. Its roots may rot due to over watering. Proper drainage by making sufficient holes in bottom of pot is must.
Soil: Water logging is to be avoided. To make the ideal potting mix, 20 % drainage media (river sand/ Leca/ Perlite/ Pumice or rice husk- use any one of them) in potting mix should be available. In rest of the potting mix, we should mix vermi-compost (20 %) and garden soil (60%).
