The mountain monarch. The Christmas tree that smells like the Appalachians.

Abies fraseri, the Fraser Fir, grows only in a narrow band of high-elevation ridges in the southern Appalachians, above 5,500 feet where the air is cold, the fog is constant, and the growing season is short. It is the most prized Christmas tree in the eastern United States, sought for its symmetrical form, upward-pointing branches that hold ornaments perfectly, soft needles that do not drop when dry, and a rich balsam fragrance that defines the holiday season for millions of families. It is also one of the most threatened tree species in the East, under severe pressure from the woolly adelgid and from climate change pushing its already thin elevational habitat higher. If you are looking to buy Fraser Fir seeds or grow this mountain conifer from seed, you are growing a tree that is disappearing from the wild.

  • The most prized Christmas tree in the eastern United States, known for perfect form and balsam fragrance
  • Upward-angled branches hold ornaments exceptionally well, needles do not drop when dry
  • Native only to high-elevation southern Appalachian peaks, one of the most geographically restricted native conifers
  • Endangered in the wild from woolly adelgid and climate pressure, every cultivated tree matters
  • Extremely cold-hardy, thriving in the harshest conditions of the southern highlands

Things you probably did not know about the Fraser Fir

It is named after John Fraser, a Scottish botanist who collected it in the 1780s.
Fraser was one of the most adventurous plant hunters of the 18th century, making multiple trips to the southern Appalachians to collect specimens for European gardens and the Russian royal court. The fir bearing his name grows on the same ridges he climbed over 200 years ago.

The woolly adelgid arrived from Asia and has killed millions of Fraser Firs in the wild.
Adelges piceae, an invasive insect pest introduced to the eastern United States from Asia in the 1950s, has devastated native Fraser Fir populations in the Great Smoky Mountains and Roan Highlands. Some wild populations have been reduced by over 90 percent. Christmas tree farms, which treat their trees for adelgid, have inadvertently become a population reservoir for the species.

The balsam fragrance comes from resin blisters in the bark.
Fraser Fir bark is covered with small resin-filled blisters that release the characteristic balsam scent when ruptured. This is the same compound, primarily alpha-pinene and bornyl acetate, that defines the smell of the boreal forest and has been studied for its effects on stress reduction and immune function.

At high elevation, it grows incredibly slowly.
Fraser Firs growing near the treeline at 6,000 feet in the Appalachians may add less than half an inch of trunk diameter per decade. Trees that appear modest in size may be over a century old. The combination of extreme cold, ice damage, and short growing seasons creates growth rings so fine they are barely visible to the naked eye.

Growing Details

  • Botanical Name: Abies fraseri
  • Stratification: Required, 30 to 60 days cold stratification
  • USDA Zones: 4 to 7
  • Soil: Well-drained, moist, acidic, rich in organic matter
  • Light: Full sun to partial shade
  • Height: 30 to 50 feet
  • Spread: 15 to 25 feet
  • Growth Rate: Slow, 6 to 12 inches per year

Plant it in a cool, moist site and be patient. The tree that grows slowest on the highest ridge is often the one worth waiting for.

Obsessed With This Ultra Soft, Fluffy, Cozy Blanket
Color: 02 Crystal Pink, Size: Twin (60" x 80"), Color: 02 Crystal Pink, Size: Twin (60" x 80")
I absolutely love this blanket. I ordered the crystal pink color in the 60x80 size to use as a throw blanket for my new cloud couch in my office, and honestly it ended up being exactly what I was hoping for. The material is incredibly soft, fluffy, and comfortable without feeling thin or cheaply made. I’ve actually been searching for another blanket similar to one I previously owned that eventually got a hole in it, and this one gave me that same cozy feeling immediately. It’s one of those blankets you instantly want to curl up in the second you touch it. One thing I really liked is that the bubble texture actually has dimension and volume to it. A lot of blankets advertised with this kind of design end up looking flat in person, but this one genuinely has that plush “bubble” effect and makes the blanket feel extra cozy and luxurious. The size is also great. It’s large enough to comfortably use on a couch while still being big enough for a twin bed if you wanted to use it that way. For me personally, it’s the perfect oversized throw blanket size. I honestly have nothing negative to say about it. The quality feels great, the stitching looks well done, the color is beautiful, and overall it feels thoughtfully made rather than cheaply mass produced. For around $25, I absolutely think it’s worth it. This has easily become one of my favorite cozy blankets in the house.

Mediocre and lacks required fabric content label
Color: 01 Off White, Size: Twin (60" x 80"), Color: 01 Off White, Size: Twin (60" x 80")
I am a "blanket person," meaning I love to be cozy, curled up on the couch, watching movies with my family, and using many different layers and types of blankets on my bed for different seasons. I was excited to order this 3D bubble fleece blanket by Lotus Karen because I have another 3D bubble fleece throw blanket that I absolutely love. The other one has a sherpa lining, which makes it a bit too warm for warmer seasons. This one by Lotus Karen is unlined, which I expected as the listing doesn't say it is lined. However, I'm feeling let down over the softness of the fleece compared to my other one. They all look similar in list photos, but they do not feel the same. After I unfurled this one onto my bed to let it fluff up, which it did after 90-minutes, but instead of the pile feeling plush and silky (like faux rabbit) this one feels more rough. It's not as high quality fleece, even though it looks the same in photos. Undeterred, I still really wanted to like this blanket and went to put it into the laundry, hoping it would bring out the best in it. However, I noticed that there is no fabric content label at all. Not just missing care instructions, but no label of any kind. Under the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Textile Products Identification Act, it is a violation of United States federal law to sell a textile product that fails to plainly disclose its constituent fiber percentages, country of origin, and registered manufacturer identity physically attached to the product. Having the information on the online listing does not meet this requirement. Because the material is somewhat mediocre, I would have given it three stars. But because it fails to meet basic consumer protection laws, it loses all.

VERY SOFT; MY DOG’S ALREADY APPROPRIATED IT
Color: 01 Off White, Size: Twin (60" x 80")
You know a blanket’s soft when my dog immediately tries to appropriate it. This is incredibly soft, and actually pretty light; it makes for a good spring or summer blanket, or a throw in addition to something else in colder weather. (The twin is big enough that you can double it up over yourself to make it thicker in colder months.) I’m not sure while it’s called a “bubble” blanket - there is a very gentle egg crate shape to it, but it’s not rigid at all, and not dual-layer or filled with air or anything. It’s a very comfy throw (my dog can also attest to that) and for ~$20 (at the time of this review), it’s a great deal. I haven’t noticed any shedding, either, but I’m going to wash it on as gentle a cycle I can, to be safe.

I WANT MORE!!
Size: 60" X 80", Color: Sage Green
I knew I'd probably like this blanket, but I wasn't ready to immediately fall in love with it! It's fluffy, it's soft, it's warm, it's comforting (like being hugged & held), it's dark (like blackout curtain dark), the color is vibrant (I got green), and it's machine washable & dryer safe with ZERO SHEDDING! I WANT MORE!!
