Wild Licorice is an erect perennial that grows to 1 - 1.5 m tall, from deep, woody rhizomes that has a licorice flavour. The leaves are alternate, each with 7 - 21 oblong leaflets. The flowers are yellowish-white, in spike-like clusters from the leaf axils. Fruit consists of oblong brown pods that are covered with long hooked prickles.

The sweet-tasting roots of wild licorice were once important medicine to the Great Plains Native Americans, for many conditions including diarrhea, stomach ache, toothache, coughs, sore throat, fever, and the flu. The rhizome was traditionally roasted in coals, pounded to remove tough fibers from the center of the rhizome, and eaten. The rhizome can be eaten raw or roasted - when slow roasted they are said to taste like sweet potatoes.  The compound responsible for the sweetness is glycyrrhizin, a substance 50 times as sweet as sugar. Wild licorice is also used as a flavouring for root beer and chewing tobacco, but it is possible that its market share could be increased with the proper promotion as a natural sugar substitute whereas, most 'licorice' candy in North America is flavoured with anise oil, wild licorice has a unique market potential as a natural sugar substitute, due to growing concerns over side effects of other synthetic sugar substitutes. Any product is unsafe if consumed in excess- licorice over-consumption is dangerous for people with high blood pressure or liver disease. Wild licorice has also been tested as a feed additive for cattle and hogs.

Each attractive bright yellowish to white flower clusters are pollinated by insects during the late summer. The flower is replaced by an oblong green pod, about ½ in long, covered in hooked bristles and containing a few seeds. As the pods ripen the color changes to coppery brown, then dark brown. The pods remain through the winter; harvest when dried and store for future planting. Note: hard seeds need to be scarified or soaked in cold water overnight to break the seed coat prior to planting.

  • Average to moist soil
  • In late fall or early spring, direct sow the treated seed 1/4 in deep.
  • OR start the seeds indoors, in a flat or individual pots 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost; keep the soil lightly moist and at a temperature of 70 degrees F until germination. Transplant seedlings out when all risk of frost has passed and when they are strong enough to handle.
  • Germinates typically within 2 weeks.
  • Spacing: 3 ft
  • Harvest: The roots and stolens are harvested in the fall of the 3rd or 4th year, before the plants have gone to seed. Flowers should be pinched off as they form in the year of harvest. The roots are dried and crushed, then boiled to evaporate off the liquid, leaving a thick black paste or solid. Yields are 2.5 to 5 tons/acre (5.5 to 11 tonnes/ha).

Top of the line, best pillows Ive ever had
Color: White-cooling Basic, Size: Queen(Pack of 2)
These pillows are top of the line! I bought them in 2024 and they are still fluffy. When they lose a little fluff, you just punch em around a little bit and voila, like new again. They have kept their shape cery well and do great for cooling. I haven't had to add more filling yet either. I just laid my head on one and thought, I need to do a review cause everytime i lay on these pillows its like clouds. My head is heavy and this is relief :-D

Weird smell
Color: White-cooling Basic, Size: Queen(Pack of 2)
The pillows are great for someone looking for something cool and comfortable. We loved them so much that we bought a second pair. However, we were seriously disappointed with the odor of our last purchase. They give off a strong and indescribable chemical/burning plastic smell so nauseating that it’s difficult to sleep with. We’re hoping this issue will resolve with a couple more washes of the pillow cases, but am worried the source is the stuffing itself.

helped treat my sore neck
Color: White-cooling Basic, Size: Camping Pillow(Pack of 1)
This pillow — after dialing in the right amount of shredded foam — has greatly helped my sore neck. Initially, I had to remove some foam. Then I gradually added foam until it reached optimum comfort and support. It is also CPAP-friendly — especially when I position my head near the pillow's edge. (I am a left-side sleeper.) I like the travel size because I use a bulky hugging pillow to ease stress on my shoulder and elbow. That makes my side of the bed feel cramped if using a larger head pillow. A smaller pillow is easy to flip end-to-end in the middle of the night. I have spent lots of money on pillows over the years, but this is the best I've ever had for relieving [1] neck pain and [2] CPAP mask seal problems. Very comfortable, supportive, and affordable. I did not notice any unpleasant smell — and I am usually sensitive to that kind of thing. Would highly recommend.

Love them!
Color: White-cooling Basic, Size: Queen(Pack of 2)
Love them! After 10 years with our MyPillows, they finally lost their fluff. The reviews I read of the MyPillows of today were not good; they didn’t have as much filling as they used to. These pillows remind me of how fluffy our new MyPillows were 10 years ago!! You sink right into them and can mush them however and they stay. These are way cheaper than the Coop and it’s the same concept; add or remove the filling as needed. The cooling side is a huge plus too! You won’t be disappointed with these pillows!

Great pillow, but the cooling effect depends on the cover
Color: Blue-ice Plus, Size: King(Pack of 2)
I really like this pillow overall. It’s comfortable, supportive, and feels well made. When you use it without a pillowcase, it definitely feels cool to the touch and does what it claims in terms of that initial cooling sensation. However, once you put a pillowcase on it, you can’t really feel the cooling effect anymore. I’ve tried multiple different pillowcases made from different materials, and none of them really let that cool feeling come through. That said, I still love the pillow itself. It’s comfortable and supportive enough that I’m keeping it. Just keep in mind that the cooling feature works best without a cover, which isn’t ideal for everyone. Overall, a good pillow — just manage expectations about the cooling effect once it’s covered.
