Wasabi Rhizome (TC)

Wasabia japonica (NOT to WA, TAS)

Supplied as single dormant rhizome

Wasabi is known for its pungent heat, similar to hot mustard or wasabi paste, which produces vapours that stimulate the nose more than the tongue. Typically used as a condiment, it adds a spicy kick to sushi and other dishes. The grated stem is often sparingly used to enhance Japanese cuisine, while its leaves and stems can be a delicious addition to salads, curries, or pickled accompaniments. Wasabi may be called one of the hardest plants to grow, but its flavour and versatility make the effort worthwhile.

This lush evergreen perennial has large, heart-shaped foliage that thrives in shady, cool, and moist conditions. While the rhizome takes around 18 months to two years to mature, the leaves and stems can be used in the meantime. Wasabi plants are delicate; planting them in low-traffic, shaded areas will minimise damage and ensure healthy growth.

How to Plant and Grow Wasabi

  1. Prepare the Soil: Plant wasabi in well-prepared, enriched soil.
  2. Careful Planting: Gently squeeze the pot to release the plant and avoid damaging the fragile foliage. The rhizome will grow new leaves, but handle with care to minimise setbacks.
  3. Planting Depth: Position the plant at the same level as it was in its pot. Firm the soil down around it and water thoroughly.
  4. Establishment Period: Wasabi plants spend their first year settling into the soil and will show more growth in their second season. Rhizomes can be harvested after two years, and leaves can be picked as needed.

Care Tips for Wasabi Plants

  • Daily Watering: Water your wasabi daily unless it’s planted near a pond.
  • Temperature Control: Protect plants from extreme weather, including frost, high heat, and direct sunlight. Provide shade and mulch to guard against frost damage.
  • Feeding: Apply a seaweed solution during winter and summer to boost plant vigour. Annual top-dressing with aged manure is usually sufficient for growth.
  • Pest Management: Treat pests promptly to prevent leaf loss, which can slow rhizome development.

Wasabi is a standout option for any edible garden or shady spot, adding both culinary flair and visual appeal

Chuckit medium rebound balls
Size: Medium
My 8 month old German shepherd dog loves these balls. They are easy to throw, they bounce great, they are very chewable! She keeps one in her mouth most of the time. It satisfies her need to chew and she does not chew other things. She drops it in the water and lets the hole fill up and drinks that way. The only problem that has caused is suction in her mouth and difficulty in dislodging it for her. However, she would be lost without it!

These are definitely indestructible
Size: Medium
Both of my dogs can destroy a ball in a matter of minutes if I let them play with them (supervised) as is. Well not with these balls. They are the ONLY ones I have found that are 100% indestructible. Please only let your dogs play with these as a toy when supervised though. They go really far when throwing them, so both dogs get a good amount of running and exercise with these. I also bought these because they have the hole in the middle of the ball which is very important in the event that a dog gets one stuck at the back of their throat. This allows them to breath unlike those without this hold. It's an unlikely event, but as dog owners, we all need to be aware of this and educate ourselves on what to do if this SHOULD happen. This isn't a scare tactic, nor a reflection of this particular brand, it can happen with any type of ball. My two dogs are about 45ish lbs and the size is perfect for them, I don't want anything smaller than this. They love them. There is no annoying squeak. Really easy to wash after use. Some balls take forever to get the slimy saliva off, but these don't.

Super-great squeaky balls
Size: 6 packs
My dog (a so-far 30 lb Aussie) absolutely loves these balls. The squeakers in them are great, quite loud. If you hate squeaky toys, do not buy these balls. I love them. They bounce really well, too. My dog loves to jump in the air and catch them on the high bounce (good indoor fun). Also, these are literally the only toy that Remy does not tear apart and consume pieces of. She even tears the fuzz off of Kong tennis-type balls. I also like that because of the "spikes," they do not get icky with saliva. I think these balls would be good for any dog of any size. Highly recommended.
