Rhaphidophora tetrasperma in Kokodama

Rhaphidophora tetrasperma in Kokodama combines the split-leaf climbing habit of the species with a wrapped growing format. The plant keeps its slender stems, aerial roots and green divided leaves, while the root zone behaves differently from a standard nursery pot.

The Kokodama ball needs careful moisture checks because the outer layer and inner root core can dry at different speeds. Bright filtered light, warmth and airflow around the root ball help prevent a wet outer layer from staying damp around a dry or oxygen-poor centre.

Kokodama plant profile

  • Plant type: Climbing tropical aroid presented in a Kokodama growing format.
  • Growth habit: Slender stems with aerial roots and natural upward growth.
  • Leaves: Green split leaves with the typical Rhaphidophora tetrasperma outline.
  • Root zone: Wrapped Kokodama ball that needs direct moisture checks.
  • Support: Can be guided onto a pole, trellis or other vertical structure as stems extend.
  • Watering check: The ball, airflow and temperature decide how quickly the root zone dries.

Wrapped root-ball behaviour

Rhaphidophora tetrasperma is native to Peninsular Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia and grows naturally as a wet-tropical climber. In Kokodama, the climbing behaviour stays the same, while the wrapped root ball needs direct moisture checks.

Check the weight and moisture of the ball before watering. A dry centre can leave the leaves curling even when the outside feels lightly damp, while a constantly wet core can reduce oxygen around the roots.

Care for Rhaphidophora tetrasperma in Kokodama

  • Light: Keep in bright filtered light, away from direct midday sun.
  • Watering: Soak or water the Kokodama ball when it has partly dried, then let it drain well.
  • Airflow: Keep air moving around the ball so the outer layer does not stay wet for too long.
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity keeps new split leaves opening more evenly.
  • Temperature: Keep warm, ideally above 18 °C, with stable conditions around the root ball.
  • Support: Add a pole or trellis once the stems start extending beyond the ball.
  • Fertilising: Use a weak liquid feed during active growth and flush gently if salts collect.
  • Root checks: Watch for roots drying hard at the edge or staying soft inside a saturated core.
  • Pruning: Trim above a node to shorten long stems or propagate cuttings.

Kokodama issues to monitor

  • Leaf curl: A dry core inside the Kokodama ball can leave the plant short of water.
  • Yellowing: A wet centre with low oxygen can stress roots and mark older leaves.
  • Dry edges: Warm air, low humidity or delayed watering can crisp new growth.
  • Loose stems: Add support before the stem bends under its own length.
  • Pests: Inspect new leaves and stem nodes for thrips, spider mites and mealybugs.

Safety for Rhaphidophora tetrasperma in Kokodama

Rhaphidophora tetrasperma contains irritating calcium oxalate crystals. Keep the plant away from pets and small children, and avoid sap contact with sensitive skin.

Botanical note on the Kokodama format

Rhaphidophora tetrasperma was described by Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1893. The epithet tetrasperma means “four-seeded,” referring to the berries; Kokodama describes the growing format rather than a separate botanical form.

Keep the wrapped root ball visible and train the split-leaf stems upward as your Rhaphidophora tetrasperma in Kokodama extends.

Faulty plug? Otherwise great set
Definitely better than the old plugs that probably had 80k miles on them. The one star off is because I had a misfire after installing. Not sure if I damaged the plug or what, but a reinstall didn't fix the misfire. In my genius, I rushed to try to gap it and ended up breaking the iridium tip. Put the old plug into cylinder 3 (where the misfire was) and it was fine. Gonna have to get a new single tomorrow at my local shop, but a bit frustrating to get a misfire after install.

Upgrade from OEM
After seeing a quite ludicrous $403 quote to change 4 spark plugs in a Mazda3 I decided to show my son how easy it is. These were an upgrade from OEM parts. They were gapped perfectly for the car. They took 20mins to fit and work fine.

garbage spark plugs
misfired after 30 minutes of driving cylinder 4 misfire code, left me stranded on the highway with baby in car. “(9621)” at the end of description is a lie, was not compatible with my vehicle even with compatibility test.
