What is rosehip extract

An extract obtained from the fruit (hips) of the dog rose (Rosa canina L.), a widespread wild shrub with a long tradition in European herbalism. The extraction uses a hydroalcoholic method at a 1:1 ratio, preserving the full active compound profile of the fruit.

Made in a specialised laboratory in Italy. Alcohol content: 55% vol.

The plant: Dog Rose (Rosa canina)

The dog rose is a thorny shrub from the Rosaceae (rose) family, found throughout Europe, North Africa and Western Asia. It typically grows in hedgerows, at the edges of woodlands and along paths, reaching 2-3 metres in height. Its flowers are simple, with five petals in white to pale pink, and bloom between May and June.

The fruit – known as rosehips – are small, oval, red-orange berries that ripen in autumn and remain on the plant even in winter. Botanically, they are "false fruits" that contain numerous small seeds covered in fine hairs inside. The name canina derives from the Latin canis (dog): according to an ancient tradition, the plant's roots were used against dog bites.

The rosehips are harvested in autumn, after the first frosts, when the active compound content is at its peak.

How to use

Dosage: 5-10 drops in a glass of water or tea, twice daily.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Where does the name "canina" come from?

The scientific name canina derives from the Latin canis (dog). According to an ancient tradition, the roots of the dog rose were used against dog bites. The English common name "dog rose" reflects this same etymology.

What are "rosehips"?

Rosehips are the fruit of the dog rose – small, oval, red-orange berries that ripen in autumn. Botanically, they are "false fruits" that contain numerous small seeds covered in fine hairs inside.

Why is the alcohol content 55%?

The fruit of the dog rose contains sugars, pectins and compounds that require a higher alcohol concentration for effective extraction. The 55% vol. ensures that the full active compound profile is completely extracted and preserved.

Is this the same rose as garden roses?

No, the dog rose is a wild rose, quite different from ornamental garden roses. It has simple five-petalled flowers (not the double blooms of cultivated roses) and grows wild in hedgerows and at woodland edges throughout Europe.

Can I use the extract daily?

Yes, rosehip extract is suitable for daily use. It is recommended to follow the indicated dosage (5-10 drops, twice daily).

How long does a bottle last?

It depends on dosage. With regular use of 10 drops twice daily, the 30 ml format lasts about 3-4 weeks. The 100 ml format lasts several months.

How should I store the extract?

Away from light and heat sources. Refrigeration is not necessary.

Sturdy tool for improving coffee distribution
Color: Black
For those who do not know what this tool does: The Weiss Distribution Technique (WDT) is a distribution method for espresso making, by which you use the tool to stir the coffee while it sits in the portafilter. You should use a portafilter funnel of the same size to avoid spilling grinds. The stirring action breaks up clumps and evens out the density of coffee within the puck. The result is reduced channeling and more even extractions. Who needs this tool: Those without a conical burr grinder, where the oil and variety of grind sizing may cause clumping, will benefit from this tool. Those with a decent conical burr grinder will find minimal benefit from this tool. I'm using a Breville Pro and do not see a huge improvement myself, for example. Quality: The build quality of this tool is excellent. You can add from one to seven needles, with many folks saying three is the sweet spot for best distribution. I've been using it for over a month and none of the needles have bent. The stand is solid aluminum and well-made, but it doubles as a protector of the needles. I just clean with a quick rinse and a wipe before returning it to its stand. Outcome: I did not realize most of the info above until after purchase. So my puck is solid, the pull is clean, and my coffee tastes great with a Breville Pro. However, this tool has a minimal amount to do with that. It is a worthwhile tool for those with a lower-end grinder, especially non-Burr grinders, and it is aesthetically-pleasing and well-made, which is why I rate it 5 stars overall. It also is of good value compared to more expensive variants.

Top quality tool that improves espresso extraction
Color: Gray
Fantastic and easy to use. Stand sits on top of espresso machine and the WDT tool is always ready, no unscrewing. Upgraded from a screw-shut version and couldn't be happier. Comes with extra needles which I hope to never need. Easy to recommend

Makes a difference but maybe only to caffeine addled coffee snobs
Color: Black
I won't say that everyone urgently needs one of these. This is helped me up my game. Perhaps not absolutely necessary, but it noticeably reduces canalization and improves extraction. And it appears to have improved not only my espresso, but my pour-overs and my Mokapot (especially the Mokapot!). It's a little fiddley to assemble - there's sets of springs and needles - but once you get it all locked down, its very tight. There's a set of spares - I can't imagine needing them. The tool kinda sits in the weighted base, but it appears to stay put in my cabinet.

WDT Tool: The Needle in My Espresso Haystack
Color: Black, Color: Black
I kind of went down a deep dive researching these WDT (Weiss Distribution Technique) tools, and I have to say, this one hits the sweet spot! The needle size is just right, and the shape is spot on for what I need. Plus, it’s a nice perk that you can remove and replace the needles. I’ve tried using needles and bobby pins in the past, but they were too thick and just ended up creating their own channels—talk about a brewing disaster! Now, here’s the twist: even though it comes with seven needles installed (and more replacements), I find it a bit overkill. With all those needles, it just traps the grinds in the center, pushing stuff around like it’s playing a game of “don’t let the coffee escape.” So, I stick with just three needles in a triangle formation for optimal distribution. Pro tip: don’t forget to adjust the depth as you use it to ensure you’re getting the best coverage of your coffee grounds! The build quality is actually pretty impressive. It feels like well-constructed metal components that could survive a small espresso war. Plus, it's more affordable than some of those fancy options out there—because who needs a second mortgage for great coffee? It looks quite nice on my counter, and the little stand is a handy extra touch. Overall, if you’re looking to up your espresso game and avoid the chaos of uneven distribution, this WDT tool is worth considering. Just remember: less is sometimes more when it comes to needles!
